The assassination team dropped out of light speed just before the hyper lane entrance that Girto's escort squad was heading towards.

Immediately, at the command of their leader, the captains of each ship and the individuals controlling the suicide drones took up their position in a dome shaped formation.

They barely managed to finish getting set up when the Alliance Police and mercenary vessels that were their targets made their appearance.

Everything was as the stealth probe had transmitted.

There were five Alliance Police ships, one light cruiser and four corvettes, and another four mercenary craft.

"Concentrate sixty percent of the drones on the light cruiser, and we're going to engage it to take its fire." The assassins' leader ordered.

While it was uncertain which of the vessels Grito was on, it was likely to be the Alliance Police cruiser. It was by far the strongest and most durable craft escorting the traitorous Baccigan. Anyone with a working mind would assume that was where he was being kept.

Of course, since this was quite obvious, a crafty commander might place their high value witness on a less assuming ship that would not be a high priority target. Still, this did not change the fact that taking down the light cruiser first was of the upmost importance.

It served as the bastion of this group, and once it was destroyed, it would eliminate their greatest strength and serve to demoralize those that were still alive.

With the information collected from the stealth probe and the spies the Odium Syndicate had within the Alliance Police; everything was going as the assassination team's leader had planned.

Naturally the Alliance Police ships were putting up a staunch resistance, and their military grade weapons and shielding were showing their greater output compared to what could normally be obtained on the market.

Nevertheless, as most battles went, the side with the superior forces was winning. The Assassination team also had the advantage of springing a trap and encircling their targets.

Except despite their advantages, even after a few minutes, not a single enemy ship had been destroyed.

"Those mercenaries are far better than we were expecting. Perhaps I should have had our informants look into them more."

The leader was occasionally glancing at the entire state of the battle and issuing orders when he deemed necessary.

Over time, he had noticed that the mercenaries he had mostly written off were far more skilled and piloting stronger vessels than anticipated.

When preparing for this mission, most of the attention had been put on the Alliance Police escorts. They constituted by far what should have been the biggest threat.

Yet, two of the mercenary vessels in particular were making major nuisances of themselves.

Both were small craft that were fast and maneuverable and had weapons that most people would consider eccentric equipped.

One had a railgun that was normally only something normally only used on large craft, and rarely at that. It was far too unwieldy a weapon for most to consider. Especially when modern laser weaponry was already quite powerful and far easier to aim and hit with.

However, the mercenary in question was using his railgun to impede the assassination team's formation.

Constantly, he was charging up his railgun and setting weapon's lock on their vessels. Several times he had even targeted the leader's own ship.

With a weapon of that magnitude aimed at them, defensive measures were a necessity. The leader was not confident that his or any of the vessels under his commander could take even a single shot from a railgun. It was simply that devastating of a weapon.

Yet, the mercenary in question hardly ever fired the damn thing.

He was merely using it as a bluff most of the time, powering down the weapon as soon as the vessel he had targeted moved in the way he wanted.

However, every few times he did this trick, the mercenary would fire the railgun. Forcing the assassination squad to keep it on their minds at all times and be ready to respond.

As for the other mercenary causing trouble, this one had an EMP blaster installed. A weapon that was hardly used by anyone in the entire galaxy. It didn't cause any actual damage to whatever it hit, and while faster than a railgun, the projectiles it fired were slower than lasers.

In almost every situation it was considered better to use a different type of weapon. Ones that could inflict damage rather than merely disable. Nearly any time that EMP weapons were used were in the rare scenarios where someone or something absolutely had to be recovered intact.

But the current battle was an aberrant situation where that normally useless EMP blaster was overwhelmingly effective. The suicide drones deployed by the assassination team were highly vulnerable to EMP weaponry.

The strategy for using them was to fly them close to their target and swarm around it while firing their single weapon.

Then even if they were destroyed, the ensuing explosion from the onboard bomb would cause major damage to whatever they were engaged with. Yet this typical reaction did not occur when they were disabled by an EMP attack.

"Sir, we've lost signal with another five of the drones."

The assassination team leader clenched his fists when he heard this.

It only took a single hit from that mercenary's EMP blaster to disable one of the suicide drones and cause them to become dead in space. Not even the self-destruct command would get through since all of the drone's electronic components had been disrupted.

"We're going to have to take some risks."

Considering the fiercer resistance than anticipated, the leader ordered a change in formation. Currently they were fighting in a manner to slowly whittle down their opponents with minimal losses. Now though, the leader was switching to a more aggressive style. He was certain to lose more of his forces, but he was also confident that they would soon overwhelm Grito's escort.

"Beep! Beep! Beep!"

As the assassins' ships were closing in, an alert started ringing through the bridge of the assassin team leader's vessel.

"What is going on now!?" He shouted.

"Our sensors have picked up signals from hyperspace. Several ships are about to come out of the exit nearby."

When he heard this, the leader's eyes went wide. A premonition flashed though his mind, and an old trick he had heard about once some time ago resurfaced.

Immediately, he called for a retreat, but it was too late. Now that he had ordered his forces to change formation and close in, they were too embroiled in battle to make a quick escape.

"Sacrifice all of the drones! I don't care what it takes! Create an opening for us to get out of here!" The leader yelled frantically.

The light cruiser that they had been fighting that had been completely focused on defense before had now moved to block their escape.

Realizing that the rest of his forces were done for, the leader focused solely on his own escape.

Unfortunately, it was already too late.

From out of hyperspace, twenty Alliance Police vessels appeared. Led by a monstrous heavy cruiser.

With the additional enemies, the assassination team was routed in less than a minute. Most being destroyed as they attempted to escape, and the few survivors being those that immediately surrendered.

"I think I'll have to give Ezra a bonus for this." Avery said, after the battle against the assassins out to eliminate Grito had finished.

His idea to lure their attackers towards a hyper lane exit was ingenious.

There they could hide allies until the moment was right.

This strategy only worked because they had forewarning of the imminent attack, and thanks to the Alliance Police's strongest move. Call for reinforcements.

If you asked anyone within the Dramid Alliance what organization possessed the most forces, the answer would be unanimously for the Alliance Police.

With the stealth probe as evidence, Commander Berk had reached out to the enormous fleet stationed in and around the system that housed the warp portal.

There were well over three thousand Alliance police vessels in the area. Warp Portals were of such strategic importance that they demanded this level of protection that was only second to the capital system.

Sparing twenty ships to assist Commander Berk had been easy enough, and thanks to these reinforcements, everything had been wrapped up nicely.

"Those assassins had some nice things too. And now that we've got Olivia's corvette as well, we've got more cargo space for loot." Avery said, his lips curved up into a smile like a greedy bandit.

Kasandra was right there with him, happily collecting their well-earned spoils. While Jasmine's reaction was a bit more muted. She was not nearly as enthused about collecting the possession of the people they had just killed. Even if these individuals had been out to destroy them.

Once the clean up was finished, Avery's team and Berks squad continued on their way to the nearby warp portal. This time with an additional twenty Alliance Police vessels to serve as escorts.
