Pestilence: Rise Of The Pure Undead-Chapter 670: Operation Arid Soil : Part Eleven
"We failed in our duties, both by allowing a living to infiltrate the camp and by allowing another escape us" the undead with a stone sword on his back was kneeling before Ir'Houwl, the timing of the assassin's infiltration could not have been more fortunate as it had been exactly at the same time as when the minor lord and her nightbird assistant were busy writing a detailed report for the Cognitio, otherwise, the assassin never would have had the occasion to even meet with the knight as the interrogation would have proceeded immediately.
"Why was there no one guarding him inside the tent?" she asked.
"It is my fault, I assumed that with the way this particular tent was built, that no one would be capable of entering it through any other way than the singular entrance and saw it fit to instead have more patrols survey the area around it" this time, it was the mage with the old wand who responded.
"Never make assumptions of this sort, with prisoners, the tighter the surveillance the better, we have no shortage of manpower to guard the camp and its surroundings, there is no need to make cuts" Ir'Houwl was quick to deduce that these two had wanted to maximise the amount of guards throughout the camp due to the fact that way they were building meant that it was less secure than typical strongholds and forts built in the main world.
"Was anything learned, however?" she asked, whilst one enemy had successfully escaped and the other swiftly beheaded themselves, it didn't mean that everything about this event was negative.
The sword-wielding undead presented the hammer the knight had first wielded as well as the sword used in the escape to his lord.
"We got to observe these livings in action, it seems like the rousing of the white sand was but a fraction of the power these decorated weapons allowed their users to wield…" the mage explained "...Indeed, it seems like they share into the power of the pale blue sun, manifesting its energy to enhance themselves and also manifest special effects like one would when using mana to cast a spell… Although the nature of the augmentation appeared to be different, the cook said that the assassin hadn't seemed all that much stronger and instead simply more stealthy… Whilst the knight had clearly received quantitative boost to his physical might"
"Although it is too soon to claim anything with certainty, it seems likely that the neutral and simple usage of this pale blue energy is to provide an enhancement specifically suited to the one using them… Or that perhaps the weapons were created specifically for the type of fighters that they were… However, the engravings on the hammer, sword and even the dagger of the assassin, had been the exact same… And since I believe that these engravings are what allow these weapons to be conduits, it seems more likely the the one wielding them is the one who determines the nature of the power increase"
The mage spoke rapidly, having already thought long and hard about everything known to them for now and crafted up this theory.
"What about the special ability the assassin used?"

"That is harder to explain with what we currently know… But it does align with the nature of a stealth-focused individual, to be capable of sudden escape like this, it may be a simple matter of talent, simply the matter that each of these livings can use the basic enhancement alongside a more specialised ability and that the knight was either not talented enough, or did not possess an ability worth using at any given time" this time, it was the swordsman who responded.
Ir'Houwl stayed silent for a few moments, the two elites, who were currently the de facto second in commands as they were the only two elites to have joined the realm for now, did not take her apparent calmness and casual attitude as a good sign, no, they knew very well that Ir'Houwl was very much unhappy with them right now.
The only reason they hadn't been demoted just yet was that their mistake had been a honest one and not one born out of sheer incompetence or stupidity, they had merely misjudged the better way of handling security, the assassin wasn't to be blamed on them since he had sneaked through the camp for a while before being spotted, he would have managed to do that anyways, but the watch over their prisoner should have been much more restrictive.
The knight should have been kept watch over by at least two undeads, and the lantern inside the tent should have been extinguished the instant it wasn't needed anymore so as to drown the tent in darkness and allow the guards outside to make good use of their darkness awareness and see what was going on inside.
'General Loimos wouldn't have made such an amateurish mistake' but most of all, it was also because Ir'Houwl felt that she should have paid more attention to what they had been doing, she had trusted them too much when they didn't even have that much field experience, that was a mistake on her part.
"You two, take a small party capable of fast movements with you and go explore the surroundings whilst the pale blue sun is here, the desert is not currently drowned by a temperature that threatens any of us, try and bring back samples of more living creatures, if you spot more of the livings with decorated weapons, do not engage, seek to lure them to us or escape them entirely… The party in question is already prepared and waiting" after giving them a good rundown of how they could avoid making the same mistake again, she just sent them on a different job, which they saw as an opportunity to redeem themselves.
Although a most bizarre event that could not yet be properly explained, the fact that the sun and environment had changed so much was a good opportunity for them to get familiar with their surroundings and also a chance to explore much further than normal now that the threat of incineration was gone, at least for some time.
The temperature had dropped to freezing, but that was nothing to the undead, it might have been problematic if it had gone as low as it was high before, but it wasn't the case.
Although the fact that the still sun had turned pale blue and grown an eye was certainly quite something already, there were other things that had changed, most noticeable was of course the sand turning pale white, and it wasn't due to the change in lighting, all of the sand had changed, even that which Ir'Houwl had stored in a jar already, she already had someone carry some to the main world, to see if it would turn back once this event passed, if it ever did.
Also, the more normal suns that would travel across the sky were nowhere to be seen anymore, the times at which they were supposed to show up passed without any appearing, also, the still sun no longer multiplied or pulled out new suns from nowhere.
It was like the realm was no longer the same at all.
