Pestilence: Rise Of The Pure Undead-Chapter 688 - Mourn
688: Mourn
688: Mourn
Blasts of filthy soul energy tore through buildings, reducing all to splinters, the sound of each ripping through the air was like terrific howling, each attack formed from soul energy had the potential of rendering a body of flesh to a piece of bloody meat, thankfully, these attacks never travelled too far before returning from where they had come from.
“That buddy of yours is unlucky to have ended up against Xator” towering like a profane totem, a restless whose rib cage extended from his chest down to his stomach spoke in an even tone, three pairs of arms protruding from the horrendous body part.
Worst of all, that extended rib cage was filled to the brim with a collection of skulls, all pressed up against one another and seeming to yearn for sweet release from behind these skeletal bars.
“So does that mean I am lucky to have ended up against you?” with a grin, Aliata, the redhead, responded without showing any signs of apprehension.
“I wouldn’t call it luck” extending all six arms to the side, the large restless stepped forward, stomping the ground with excessive force, forming a spiderweb crack upon it as he threw himself forward, all of his limbs exploding into a flurry of furious attacks, each intending on seriously maiming or even killing the living.
“Moural” saying something whilst stepping back, the restless’s fist struck a soul energy barrier about the size of a person’s chest, he easily broke through it but the small delay was enough Aliata to step back and finally call forth her soul object, which turned out to be a bronze dagger, which she casually spun around.
Without saying anything else, she lunged forward with nothing but her speed and leg strength, swinging her short blade at the much larger foe with frightening dexterity, ducking underneath a swing of one arm, sidestepping a straight punch from another, evading three others that attempted to grab onto her and weightlessly stepped over the last one as it tried to smack her over the head.
The dagger was swing right at the restless’s head, despite the speed of the attack, the undead did not move, instead, one of the humanoid skulls within his rib cage, identical to the one upon the shoulders, seemed to light up with soul energy, causing the living to reflexively kick against from her opponent before she could complete the attack, right on time to evade a translucent, ghostly double of the restless manifesting out of thin air that would have squashed her into a bear hug.
‘That guy has some tricks…’
‘That girl is way too fast…’
“So… I assume each of those skulls can summon an apparition corresponding to it?” she assessed, and her foe did not respond, which was answer enough for Aliata.
‘Never heard of such a restless…’
“Hey, what’s your name anyways?
I am Aliata”
Tilting his head at the sudden presentation, the restless’s fingers twitched as he got ready to attack again.

“Xaros”
“Yup, never heard of it… Don’t worry, I’ll remember your name after I’ve killed you”
“After you’ve killed that which is already dead?
Colour me interested in what means you intend on using to do that”
“It’s a manner of speech, bone-boy”
She lunged forward again, her rapid steps barely making any noise as the area was suddenly illuminated by blue flashes as Xaros used his own special ability, now that it was revealed anyways, he might as well go for it.
All three of the skulls identical to his own illuminated with soul energy, predictably resulting in three phantomatic apparitions of himself to manifest and rush right at the living, covering the advance of the true body, who did not hang back.
Despite being now technically outnumbered, Aliata did not even use the first step of her soul dagger and just kept on running forward, weaving and twisting around all attacks like some sort of demented snake.
Xaros found it hard to believe that she could be so fast and agile without even using the technique that made livings suddenly accelerate, but it was hardly deniable as he was bearing witness to it right at this instant.
She was using her small frame to her advantage and getting too close for any proper attack to be wind-up at her, getting into the midst of Xaros and his duplicates to prevent them from properly attacking at once.
Her dagger lashed out, discovering that the ethereal apparitions did have a physical form and seemed to share their durability with what they were imitating as only shallow cuts were left on the surface of the struck bone.
This could have been reassuring for the undead if not for the fact that she had landed multiple of those slashes in a mere instant, turning what would have been a mere graze into a truly worrying attack.
Thankfully, it wasn’t directed at his actual body and only one of his decoys.
‘I’ll bury her before she can find a way to slither to me…’ a dozen or so more skulls flared up with soul energy within him, manifesting the forms of the creatures they had once belonged to, the three skulls identical to his were sort of an exception to his ability as he had earned them by literally beheading himself and regrowing his head, something he had done more than three times, but Xaros had been unable to add more than three to his rib cage even with ample of space to fit them.
The rest were scavenged skulls found throughout the lands of grey, which resulted in the casting of odd and bizarre beasts as they were manifested in their original form and not as the skeletons that all previous denizens of the dust plane had become.
Though, it truly was unfortunate that this strange ability of his only accepted intact skulls, or that he wasn’t a giant, lest he truly could have brought some serious firepower to the table by merely taking one of the giant skulls for himself.
A collection of now extinct creatures surrounded the living, bear-wolves with thick fur that seemed to be pulled upward at all times, two-headed lizards with dorsal spikes lining their spine, or frog-like creatures with horrendously large eyes with a strange smoke flowing from their maw.
Alongside the three images of himself, they attacked whilst Xaros himself also lunged forward, using this instant to do something he had made sure to not show the living just yet, his apparitions were made from pure soul energy, but they did have the same status of solidity as what they based upon, so they could stand on the ground, bump into walls or one another.
However, that rule could be ignored by their creator if he so desired, and so, as they all moved in unison, Xaros attacked right through them.
“Mourn” the restless felt the sudden spike in power, and he could tell that Aliata had decided to directly use her second step.
And the bronze dagger seemed to writhe into life, a mouth appearing upon the side of the blade, and pursed like the lips of an opera singer, emitting an enchanting melody, across the area, causing each and every being of soul energy to collapse and disappear, as well as cause their creator’s own energy to be thrown in disarray, leaving him right open for a counterattack of the now empowered dagger, taking two of his six arms in a single slash despite his best efforts to dodge at the last second.
“My bad, Xaros, I think I am your worst match up”
