Re-Overlord: I Can Acquire Anything!-Chapter 89: Unexpected Reunion
Chapter 89: Unexpected Reunion
Inside the new deep underground hideout, Igaris sat in silence, his eyes fixed on the flickering light of a rune lamp embedded in the stone wall.
He mourned for his losses.
Many of his subordinates had died protecting him. Reviving them would take time, effort, and energy he could not spare easily.
Worse yet, a few dozen had died permanently.
Perhaps their souls had been too fragile. Perhaps the mental damage they suffered in the battle was too great. Either way, they were beyond retrieval.
This wasn’t a catastrophic loss. But it was alarming.
He clenched his fists.
Using them as distractions—like pawns to be discarded—had bought him time to escape. But the cost... it wasn’t something he could easily ignore anymore.
He let out a slow breath.
From now on, he promised himself, this tactic would only be used when absolutely necessary.
Never again would he gamble so many lives so recklessly.
Because, whether he admitted it aloud or not, his perspective was changing.
They were no longer just mindless tools to him anymore.
Even without independent wills, they had life. And every life deserved a chance.
A chance to grow. To adapt. To evolve into something more than what it started as.
He paused, allowing the weight of that thought to settle in his chest.
Cough! Well... not his enemies, of course.
They didn’t need growth. They just needed to disappear.
Still, the mission was a success. The gains were noticeable.
Twelve B-Rank Mechas.
Over 2,500 C and D-Rank Mechs.
Most of them required Spirit Stones to operate, though a select few had built-in energy recovery functions that absorbed magical particles from the atmosphere.
These additions brought his walking army to over 6,000 units.
Six thousand wasn’t much compared to the true giants of the world—those with hundreds of thousands or even millions at their command. But it was a good start.
A single raid had earned him 2,500 units.
And there were countless others left to raid.
He wasn’t planning to stop just because of Adrian’s watchful eyes.
But he paused for a moment.
Wouldn’t this eventually become a disadvantage for the Federation if he kept stealing their assets?
And Evernight... she would certainly give him an earful when she found out.
She was doing everything she could to help the Federation win. Meanwhile, he was acting like a selfish jackass.
His shoulders slumped slightly as he muttered to himself:
"But what should I do? I only have 5 days here. Even if I give it everything I’ve got, I can’t make a huge impact on this war."
His thoughts drifted to Roxanne and Isadora. He hadn’t yet found them. To say goodbye.
That woman—no, his mother—deserved to know the truth, regardless of how bitter it might be. And deep down, he wanted answers too. Why had she left him there? Why had she abandoned her own son in a world as cruel as the Forsaken Land?
He clenched his fist.
He needed to see her. To confront her. Even if the words turned to fire on his tongue.
"Knock, knock."
The sharp raps on the door echoed through the hideout’s dim, quiet halls.
"Come in," Igaris said, his voice calm, though his thoughts were not.
The door creaked open, and Rax stepped in, his pace quick, expression tense.
"Boss, someone’s here. Asking to meet you," he said without preamble.
Igaris frowned slightly. "Who is it? How did they find this place?"
Rax hesitated, clearly unsettled. "It’s a woman and... a little girl. They said they know you."
His frown deepened. "You let them in?"
"No. Not yet," Rax replied quickly. "But they somehow made it past two patrol layers without raising any alarms. No signs of aggression either. They’ve just been waiting quietly outside the barrier."
Igaris stood up, his shadow stretching long across the flickering light of the hideout.
A woman... and a small girl?
His heart skipped a beat.
Could it be?
"Alright, let them in," he finally said, a hint of anticipation threading through his voice.
Rax found it strange but bowed and left without question.
After a short while, he returned. But this time with a woman and a small girl followed behind him.
The woman had golden-blonde hair and carried herself with a refined temperament. The little girl beside her had black hair, and the moment her eyes landed on Igaris, her face lit up with joy and excitement.
They were indeed his predecessor’s mother and younger sister: Roxanne and Isadora.
"Big brother!"
Isadora immediately broke away from her mother’s grip and dashed toward Igaris like a little koala.
Igaris smiled softly and caught her gently by the arms before she could tumble into him.
She threw her arms around him and began to sob:
"Wooh, wooh... I missed you so much, big brother!"
He gently patted her small back as she let out her feelings against his shoulder. Her sobs were messy. She sniffed salty tears, and even a little snot dampened his shoulder, but he said nothing.
Though he wasn’t truly her brother by soul, he had inherited this life, this role. So it was his responsibility now to protect and care for her. A truth he had come to accept—albeit a bit too late, buried under layers of mental strain of loneliness.
"Your big brother missed you too, little sister," Igaris said warmly, brushing her hair gently. "I’m happy to see you safe and well. You look like a princess now."
"Hmph... I don’t want to be some snotty princess," Isadora huffed, tightening her grip on him. "I just want to be your one and only little sister."
Roxanne watched the scene with a soft smile and quiet gentleness.
Now that she looked at her boy—no, the young man—in front of her, she could finally see it. He now resembled the very child who once stepped up to provide for them during their darkest days in the Forsaken Land. The strange unfamiliarity was slowly disappeared.
Meanwhile, Rax quietly slipped away after receiving a subtle signal from Igaris, leaving the family in peace.
A minute passed, and once Isadora finally calmed down in her brother’s embrace, Igaris turned his gaze toward Roxanne.
There were many questions still lingering.
Many truths buried.
And secrets waiting to be unveiled.
