Chapter 182 -171: A Display of Authority
When going through customs, Lu Jiaxin was worried her three paintings would be confiscated. To her surprise, during the check on the Mainland side, the official merely asked where the paintings were from, and as soon as Lu Jiaxin mentioned that she had found them at an antique market, they immediately let her pass. In Hong Kong, the inspection officers didn’t even ask any questions before allowing her through.
Once she had passed the checkpoint, Lu Jiaxin saw Hu Ming waiting outside. She wasn’t one for surprises; she had called Gu Xiuxiu the day before to tell her about her trip to Hong Kong.
After about half an hour, Lu Jiaxin looked out the window and realized the route was different from last time. She casually asked, “Where are we going?”
Hu Ming explained, “Miss Cousin, when you called yesterday, the second young mistress came to visit the matriarch. Knowing you were coming today, she told the matriarch she would take you to pick out some clothes, and the matriarch agreed. Miss Cousin, the second young mistress is now awaiting you at the Central Shopping Plaza.”
Lu Jiaxin closed her eyes and said unhurriedly, “I’m a bit tired, please take me back to the villa to rest first.”
Su Heyuan had shown her all the information about the He Family. The person currently in charge of the He Group was He Zhuliang, the eldest son born to He Long’s first wife. His wife also came from a distinguished family, and the couple had been in a love marriage with a strong relationship to this day. Married for thirty-five years, they had three sons and two daughters. The eldest and youngest children were daughters; eldest daughter He Mingzhu was now the general manager of the group, while youngest daughter He Yanyan, the child of their old age, was seventeen this year and was set to attend Senior Middle School 7 after the school term began. Of the three sons, the eldest, He Hanguang, was employed in the group’s hotel business with only average ability; the second son, He Hanzheng, was a cardiovascular specialist; and the youngest son, He Hanxuan, a frequenter of the gossip magazines due to his philandering ways.
According to Su Heyuan’s information, He Yanyan was spoiled and quick-tempered, which made her difficult to provoke. For this reason, Su Heyuan even called to warn her, saying that she would face some bullying from He Yanyan when she arrived.
Since acknowledging his kinship, Su Heyuan himself hadn’t been spared bullying and harassment from his uncle and several male cousins, and so he worried that Lu Jiaxin would be bullied, teaching her some ways to cope. Lu Jiaxin listened to this advice but didn’t take it seriously.
Hu Ming, observing her expression through the rearview mirror, asked, “Does Miss Cousin mean that we are not going to Central to meet the second young mistress?”
Lu Jiaxin’s voice was somewhat cold as she responded, “I don’t like to repeat myself.”
Thinking of his cousin’s earlier advice, Hu Ming reminded her, “Miss Cousin, the second young mistress has a rather bad temper. If you don’t go, she’ll get angry.”
Lu Jiaxin let out a light laugh, her words imbued with disdain, “What does it matter to me if she gets angry? Just because I’m afraid of her anger, does that mean I have to grovel and try to please her?”
Hu Ming previously thought she had a good temperament, but now he realized his judgment was flawed; this Miss Cousin was indeed a Little Chili.
Upon arriving at the Mid-mountain mansion, Aunt Hong was surprised to see Lu Jiaxin and asked, “Miss Cousin, why didn’t you go shopping with the second young mistress?”
Lu Jiaxin gave her a look and said, “Did I agree to that?”
She hadn’t even arrived when He Yanyan had planned her itinerary as if she were visiting relatives, not coming to be a maid. If she compromised this time, that woman would surely boss her around in the future.
Aunt Hong was at a loss for an answer.
Lu Jiaxin, with a stern face, asked, “Where’s my room?”
Last time, she had unexpectedly stayed in a guest room, but now that she was a permanent resident, she wasn’t sure which room she would be staying in.
Gu Xiuxiu lived on the second floor, and for convenience in taking care of her, Aunt Hong and Aunt Mei both resided on the second floor, so they arranged for Lu Jiaxin to stay on the third floor.
The guest rooms on the first floor were reserved for visitors, so placing her on the third floor was within Lu Jiaxin’s expectations. Young people, after all, could consider climbing stairs as a form of exercise.
Gu Xiuxiu had gone to visit an old friend today and had not returned. Lu Jiaxin carrying a suitcase and a travel bag, handed the suitcase to a strong-bodied maid to help her carry it upstairs.
Once they reached the third floor, Aunt Hong pointed to the first room on the left and whispered, “This is Young Master Cousin’s room. Young Master Cousin has gone to classes today; he will be back at four in the afternoon.”
Lu Jiaxin’s room was the second on the right. Upon entering, she found it to be very spacious, comparably sized to her bedroom in the Forty-nine City. The decoration was in the same European royal style as downstairs, with a delicate pink princess bed and exquisite French furniture.
Lu Jiaxin pointed to the pink European-style palace circular canopy bed net and said, “Aunt Hong, I don’t like to use mosquito nets. Please have this one taken down.”
With the air conditioning on, the room was cool, and there wouldn’t be mosquitoes. Removing the mosquito net wouldn’t affect anything.
As she had expected, this Miss Cousin was difficult to please, but fortunately, the Young Master Cousin was both well-behaved and filial. Aunt Hong reminded her, “Miss Cousin, this was arranged by the old lady.”
Lu Jiaxin hummed in acknowledgment, “I’ll talk to Auntie when she returns. For now, have someone take down the mosquito net.”
Although Aunt Hong thought Jiaxin was a bit demanding, she still arranged for the maid who had brought up the luggage to remove the mosquito net, “Miss Cousin, is there anything else you need?”
Lu Jiaxin knew that Aunt Hong didn’t like her, but she still replied politely, “I’m all set here, you can go on with your other tasks.”
Aunt Hong was the housekeeper at the Guh Residence, and she was indeed busy with a lot of responsibilities. If the old lady hadn’t instructed her before leaving, she wouldn’t have personally accompanied Lu Jiaxin up to her room.
Descending the stairs, a young maid whispered, “Auntie, the Miss Cousin has quite the temper. The old lady personally chose that mosquito net for her.”
Although Aunt Hong shared the same opinion, unlike the young maid, she wouldn’t express it openly, “The Miss Cousin has a bad temper, so be sure to attend to her well and don’t give her any reason to send you away.”
Lu Jiaxin’s room also came with a beautiful vanity and a separate walk-in closet, which she particularly liked. What pleased her most about the room was the floor-to-ceiling window that, upon drawing the curtains, offered a view of the garden below.
It was hot in July, and Lu Jiaxin, feeling somewhat sticky, decided to take a shower and change clothes before going downstairs to call Su Heyuan.
Su Heyuan started working at the family’s clothing factory in February and experienced much exclusion, but he hadn’t left. He worked diligently and carefully.
Lu Jiaxin was aware that he had the capability and wasn’t the type to give in easily. If he chose to stay despite being hindered and tripped up by uncles and cousins, he surely had his reasons.
When Su Heyuan heard her voice, he responded with a laugh, “You’ve arrived, haven’t you?”
Lu Jiaxin smiled and said, “I arrived an hour ago. Big Brother Su, do you have time tomorrow? I would like to treat you to a meal.”
Su Heyuan was amused, “You’ve just arrived in Hong Kong, how could I let you treat me? You can treat me after you’ve made some money.”
Lu Jiaxin didn’t stand on ceremony with him and happily agreed.
Su Heyuan was also quite busy, and after arranging to pick her up after work the following day for dinner, he hung up.
Having nothing to do after hanging up the phone, Lu Jiaxin stopped a maid who was tidying up, “What’s your name?”
The maid answered respectfully, “Miss Cousin, my name is Huang Mei; everyone calls me Ah Mei.”
Lu Jiaxin politely said, “Does the household subscribe to any newspapers or magazines? If so, please bring them to me.”

The maid quickly went to the storeroom and brought back a thick stack of newspapers, “Miss Cousin, these are the newspapers from last month and this month.”
Lu Jiaxin thanked her and picked up the latest newspaper to start reading.
