Rebirth: A Second chance at life-Chapter 28: Veronica helping Aurora?
Chapter 28: Veronica helping Aurora?
"Sis"!
Feigning surprise, Veronica called out to Aurora, her voice laced with artificial sweetness.
Aurora, however, didn’t turn immediately. She had no desire to let the sight of her so-called sister ruin her mood. But a slow smirk tugged at her lips—playing with this fool was always amusing. Compared to the truly devious people she had encountered in her previous life, Veronica was nothing more than a petty schemer.
And she still needs to pay for that little trick she pulled yesterday.
With that thought, Aurora finally turned to Sebastian. "You go ahead and wait in the car," she said smoothly, her voice carrying an air of quiet confidence. "I’ll be there in a moment."
Then, with deliberate ease, she shifted her gaze to Veronica, her eyes gleaming with something unreadable.
Veronica’s breath hitched as her eyes landed on Aurora’s face.
Just a while ago, she had been the plump, pathetic ugly duckling—weak, insignificant. Yet now, standing before her, Aurora exuded an effortless elegance, her once-round features sharpened, her aura completely transformed.
Has she lost weight?
Shock flickered in Veronica’s eyes, but she quickly masked it with a forced smile. This isn’t possible...
Veronica’s fingers clenched around the fabric of her dress as she took in the striking transformation. The timid, overweight girl she had spent years poisoning was gone. In her place stood a woman of undeniable beauty—her once round face now sculpted, her dull eyes replaced with an intense, piercing gaze. Her very presence radiated elegance, as if she had been reborn into someone untouchable.
From the corner of her eye she caught Alexander staring at Aurora.
A sharp surge of jealousy burned in Veronica’s chest. This bitch... why isn’t she dying?
The drugs should have left her frail, sickly—helpless. Yet, Aurora stood before her, not only surviving but thriving. Did she find someone to cure her? The thought sent a cold shiver down Veronica’s spine. No. That wasn’t possible. No one should have been able to detect the poison, let alone reverse its effects.
And yet, how is she losing weight so fast?
For years, Veronica had ensured Aurora remained undesirable—weak, sluggish, trapped in a body that would never catch Alexander’s eye. But now, in just a few weeks, she had shattered those chains, growing more beautiful by the day.
Veronica’s nails dug into her palm. Does she think that looking like this will make Alexander want her?
The idea was absurd, yet an unsettling fear clawed at her chest.
Veronica’s voice dripped with fake concern as she stepped closer, her expression carefully crafted into one of worry.
"Sis, you’re here! We’ve been searching for you," she said, her tone saccharine sweet. "Please don’t be mad at us. Mom has been so worried—she hasn’t slept in days."
Veronica’s gaze flickered toward the sleek black car parked nearby, her curiosity piqued. Who was that? The luxurious vehicle alone screamed wealth and power, but she couldn’t make out the figure inside.
Maybe some old rich man? she mused, a cruel smirk forming on her lips. It would be perfect if Aurora was clinging to some aging tycoon. If only I could see his face—then I could humiliate her even more.
Veronica’s eyes gleamed with fake concern as she plastered a sympathetic expression on her face.
"Sis, who was that man with you? Is he your friend?" she asked, her voice laced with curiosity and something more—an attempt to pry into Aurora’s affairs.
She took a step closer, lowering her voice slightly. "Are you... staying with him these days?" A deliberate pause, as if she were piecing together a scandalous assumption.
Veronica sighed dramatically, shaking her head. "But, sis, it’s not safe to stay at a random man’s house. You’re young now... vulnerable." She reached for Aurora’s hand, feigning sisterly concern. "Please, come home with me. Mom will forgive you, and we can be a family again."
Alexander’s gaze darkened, his sharp eyes narrowing as an icy chill settled over him. The air around him grew heavy, his aura turning oppressive in an instant.
A scoff escaped his lips, laced with cold contempt, as he turned his gaze to Aurora with a newfound disgust.
Aurora arched a brow, unimpressed by the performance.
"You don’t have to be afraid," Veronica continued, lowering her voice as if offering a secret truce. "I won’t even complain to Mom about that day... It was my mistake."
Aurora’s smirk didn’t waver, but her eyes darkened ever so slightly. Oh?
Veronica met Aurora’s gaze, and an unexpected chill spread through her spine.
For a fleeting moment, she swore she saw something terrifying—something monstrous lurking beneath Aurora’s calm expression.
How... how can she be so intimidating?
The sister she had always mocked and trampled on now stood before her, exuding an aura so suffocating it made Veronica’s breath hitch.
No... this must be an illusion.
Forcing a nervous laugh, she blinked rapidly, convincing herself it was just her imagination.
Miss me, my dearest sister? "I got the sisterly love you showed me yesterday," she drawled, her voice laced with mock sweetness. "I must say, I had quite a bit of fun with the gifts you sent me. They helped me relax my stiff muscles perfectly."
Veronica’s expression faltered, her forced smile twitching at the edges.
Aurora leaned in just slightly, lowering her voice but making sure each word dripped with meaning. "Oh, and don’t forget to pay a visit to the hospital." Her smirk widened as she watched the blood drain from Veronica’s face. "You might want to check in on someone there."
Veronica’s breath hitched, her fingers curling into fists as an uneasy chill spread through her.
W..What gift are you talking about? I don’t even know your address, how can I send you any gift?
Veronica’s heart was racing against her ribcage. How is this possible, how does she know?
She must be bluffing.
Veronica’s racing heart slowly steadied as she reassured herself. There’s no way Aurora suddenly became smart overnight. That’s impossible.
She must have simply learned to put on an act—nothing more.
Thinking that, a wave of relief washed over her, and a smirk crept onto her lips. Let her pretend all she wants. In the end, she’s still the same pathetic girl.
Aurora chuckled softly, her eyes glinting with dangerous amusement. She took a slow step closer, lowering her voice just enough to send a shiver down Veronica’s spine.
"Your little life loves to play with fire, it seems," she murmured, her smirk deepening.
Veronica stiffened, her throat bobbing as an uneasy dread settled in. The playful malice in Aurora’s tone made it clear—this was no empty threat.
Aurora side-glanced at Alexander, her gaze settling on his so-called handsome face, now twisted in disgust as he looked at her. Pathetic, she thought, a bitter smirk threatening to curl on her lips.
How ironic.
Does he know that his Little Miss Perfect has been lying to him?
Aurora scoffed, amusement flickering in her eyes as she watched Veronica squirm.
Well, well... something is being delivered to me on a silver platter, she mused, a slow smirk forming on her lips. ƒreewebɳovel.com
And she would make sure to use it just right.
Aurora leaned in ever so slightly, her lips curling into a smirk as she whispered, her voice barely audible to anyone but Veronica.
"Oh, Veronica... does Mr. Brown know that you have no connection to Dr. Lia?"
Veronica’s breath hitched, her body going rigid as the color drained from her face. Her fingers twitched slightly, but she quickly forced a smile, though the flicker of panic in her eyes was impossible to hide.
Aurora tilted her head, watching with quiet amusement.
Earlier that evening as Aurora passed by their private dining room, fragments of their conversation drifted to her ears. She hadn’t intended to eavesdrop, but when she heard Alexander mention Dr. Lia, her steps slowed ever so slightly.
She didn’t miss the way Veronica hesitated—the brief flicker of unease in her voice before she forced a response.
Aurora scoffed, a smirk tugging at her lips. Oh? I didn’t know she knew me!.
Her fingers lightly tapped against her side as she walked away, her mind already spinning with possibilities.
Well, dear sister... you’re making my plan much easier
Over the past few days, Aurora had been meticulously digging into the Brown Group’s records, sifting through their old and new projects. Most were unremarkable—typical corporate dealings—but then, something made her pause.
A project.
Under her name.
Her fingers hovered over the screen as she read the details. It was a project she had completed months ago—before the explosion. Before her supposed demise.
Her eyes darkened. How is this possible?
As Luna, she had never had any direct connection to Alexander or his company. And yet, her work was sitting right there, under the Brown Group’s banner.
Could this be connected to the explosion?
If her project was here, then someone her team had to be involved. Someone had taken her work. I need to find it as soon as possible.
