Rebirth: I Am Not the Movie Queen This Time-Chapter 101 The First Step of the Long March
Chapter 101: Chapter 101 The First Step of the Long March
Frustrated by his sister’s persistence, Jiang Kechu finally explained lightly, "Wan Chu’er’s father used to be a company commander in our army and sacrificed himself for the country. I’ve visited her family to offer condolences, so I know her."
"Ah?" Jiang Xiaoxiao was somewhat surprised, "Wan Chu’er’s father is gone? Poor Chuchu, no wonder she has to play with a punching bag by herself. Without a father to protect her, she has to be strong and independent."
Jiang Kechu found his sister’s imagination a bit too wild. He clearly remembered the time in Wutong County when he saw Wan Chu’er kicking; her roundhouse kick was pretty strong. He guessed that the punching bag was for her boxing practice.
After feeling some sorrow for Wan Chu’er, Jiang Xiaoxiao asked, "Does Chuchu have any other family members? Why does she live there alone?"
Jiang Kechu didn’t want to keep up the conversation with his sister, but then thought that it might be better to have Xiaoxiao take care of Wan Chu’er in the future.
As a man, he had many inconveniences, plus he was busy with work and only had time on weekends. More importantly, he noticed that Wan Chu’er was intentionally keeping her distance.
So, while driving, Jiang Kechu said:
"Wan Chu’er’s mother passed away not long ago. She’s all by herself now."
"So Chuchu is now an orphan? That’s really sad. I’ll have to visit her often, so she’s not so lonely," said Jiang Xiaoxiao, a girl with a wealth of emotions, immediately feeling immense sympathy for Wan Chu’er.
This was precisely Jiang Kechu’s intention, to have his sister look after Wan Chu’er a bit.
As for being pitiful?
Jiang Kechu didn’t think Wan Chu’er was pitiful at all. Looking at her stubbornness, she probably had more tenacity than weeds.
Remembering how Wan Chu’er had stood in front of him and played around, Jiang Kechu felt a twitch at the corners of his mouth. With that kind of spirit, as long as she wanted to, she could probably live very well.
When the siblings returned home, Mrs. Jiang came to greet them, looking slightly downcast as she peered behind them.
"Mom, seeing your beloved daughter and outstanding son return, how could you not be happy?" Jiang Xiaoxiao affectionately wrapped her arm around her mother’s and asked with a grin.
Mrs. Jiang glanced at her and said, "Wei Feng hasn’t come by for a while. She’ll graduate from university next year. Kechu, you’re not young anymore. After Wei Feng graduates, you two should get married."
Jiang Kechu, without pausing, replied, "We’ll see what Wei Feng thinks." Then he went upstairs.
Dissatisfied with her son’s casual attitude, Mrs. Jiang complained to her daughter:
"With the way your brother behaves, I don’t know how Wei Feng puts up with him. Girls need to be pursued and pampered. Does your brother expect Wei Feng to be the one to propose marriage?"
Jiang Xiaoxiao laughed and said, "Sister Wei Feng likes my brother, doesn’t she? Don’t worry so much."
She remembered clearly how much effort Wei Feng had put into chasing her brother, so much so that even if her brother wasn’t moved, she was. Fortunately, Sister Wei Feng and her brother ended up together.
Mrs. Jiang shook her head and said, "You don’t understand. Wait until you’re in a relationship; you’ll know that a relationship requires both sides to give."
Jiang Xiaoxiao blinked and said with a laugh, "How about I go out on the street right now and bring you back a son-in-law?"
"You child—" Mrs. Jiang slapped her daughter’s hand and said, "Don’t be ridiculous."
"Hehehe, don’t worry." Jiang Xiaoxiao turned her head, remembered the earlier incident of Wan Chu’er calling her brother ’uncle,’ and couldn’t help but laugh again, "Mom, you don’t know, but just now, my brother was called ’uncle’ by someone."
"Oh? What happened?"
Jiang Xiaoxiao then recounted Wan Chu’er’s encounter, laughing as she told the story.
Mrs. Jiang asked a few questions and finally sighed, "Wan Chu’er is quite an impressive child." She always admired children who strived for self-improvement.
Meanwhile, Wan Chu’er was busy with her computer, and time flew by as she tinkered with it. By around 10 o’clock at night, she finally set up the development environment for programming in C language for beginners.
Looking at the "helloworld!" line displayed on the black screen, she was overwhelmed with excitement.
This sentence is the first program output for every programmer starting out, marking her first step onto the stairway of learning programming.
That night, Wan Chu’er had a wonderful dream. She dreamt that the game software she developed was extremely popular, with bills flying toward her automatically every day.
While she was joyfully collecting the bills, a new day arrived.
When Wan Chu’er went for her morning run to the park, Ge Erdan and his grandfather were already there waiting. Like the day before, Ge Erdan followed Wan Chu’er, running and practicing martial arts.
After exercising, Ge Erdan’s cheeks were flushed, and he squinted his sparkling eyes and asked, "Sister Chu’er, are you in a good mood?"
Wan Chu’er smiled and said, "Yes, I took the first step of my long march yesterday."
Her tone was full of determination. Seeing Wan Chu’er’s vibrant look, Old Man Ge chuckled and said, "Youth is wonderful."
Perhaps because she was indeed in a good mood, Wan Chu’er took the rare initiative to invite Ge Erdan to her house for homework after lunch, which delighted him so much that he was all smiles without a care.
"Grandpa Ge, I prefer quiet over noisy," Wan Chu’er said. Though it was rare for her to extend such kindness by inviting Ge Erdan, she did not want to attract trouble so she set the conditions in advance.
Ge Erdan didn’t understand, but Old Man Ge, who had lived through many years, naturally grasped Wan Chu’er’s intent. He waved his hand and said:
"Don’t worry. It’s rare for you to bond with our Erdan. He definitely won’t cause you any trouble. Later, I’ll send him to find you, and once I’ve done that, I’ll head back home. If Erdan needs to come back, please trouble you to escort him to our doorstep."
Seeing how readily Grandpa Ge agreed, Wan Chu’er smiled and consented. She patted Ge Erdan’s head, reminding him to eat well.
Wan Chu’er had just finished tidying her home when there was a knock at the door.
"Sister Chu’er, it’s Ge Erdan." He sure came early.
When she opened the door, Ge Erdan rushed in with his backpack, handing her an envelope as soon as he saw her.
"Sister Chu’er, this is my tuition fee. You can have it all."
Wan Chu’er glanced at the envelope in her hand and then at Old Man Ge standing at the doorway.
Old Man Ge smiled and said, "As we agreed before, we will pay tuition for you tutoring Erdan, twenty per session. We had initially agreed on martial arts coaching, but now he’s also running with you, so we added a bit more. Inside is US$900, the tuition fee for the first month."
Wan Chu’er nodded, did not refuse, and put the money from the envelope away, as it was her due.
Old Man Ge watched his grandson sit at Wan Chu’er’s dining table, diligently beginning his homework, then happily returned home.
He was pretty accurate in assessing people; he trusted Wan Chu’er’s character, and there was no better place to leave his grandson.
Wan Chu’er worked on simple codes from the textbook, while Ge Erdan did his own homework, followed by reading extracurricular books once he finished.
The two did not disturb each other, maintaining a serene atmosphere. Nearing lunchtime, Wan Chu’er escorted Ge Erdan back home.
