Chapter 103: Chapter 103 Welcoming Party

Lin Yufei immediately countered: "Even at my worst, I just say a few words. You, on the other hand, actually steal things from classmates."

...

The two quickly started arguing again, and Mai Qiqi and Wan Chu’er had become immune to their quarrels.

These two would fight every other day, but when their interests aligned, they would quickly make up and forget that they ever argued.

Mai Qiqi stuffed in her earphones to listen to English, while Wan Chu’er grabbed a book and climbed to the top bunk to read; it was just the right time for a midday nap.

On the way to class in the afternoon, Mai Qiqi said to Wan Chu’er, "Hey Chuchu, about the freshman welcome party that Yu Fei mentioned, don’t you want to give it a try?"

Wan Chu’er laughed, saying: "Let’s not talk about me. I can’t sing or dance, and I probably wouldn’t even pass the first round of selections."

Mai Qiqi looked at her with a mischievous grin,

"Who said anything about singing or dancing? You could go up there and perform a Martial Arts set for everyone; it would stun the audience. A beauty throwing punches, just the sound of it is attractive."

"No way!" Wan Chu’er rejected firmly, "I’m not a performing monkey; I don’t like being gawked at."

Mai Qiqi couldn’t help but laugh, "How does that make you a performing monkey? By saying that, you might offend a whole bunch of people."

Wan Chu’er said, "I’m talking about myself. Singers just have to stand there and open their mouths, maybe wave a hand like a leader. But performing Martial Arts? Isn’t that just hopping around like a monkey?"

Mai Qiqi blinked and joined her hands in a pleading gesture towards Wan Chu’er, "For my sake, just be a monkey this one time. Let’s go on stage together."

"You know Martial Arts too?" Wan Chu’er gave her a once-over. She didn’t seem the type.

Mai Qiqi smiled, "I’ll play the guzheng, you perform Martial Arts. We’ll be in perfect harmony."

"Are you serious?"

"Yeah, more real than real gold. There will be someone important coming to the freshman party—very important to me. I want to make an appearance in front of him," Mai Qiqi said earnestly.

Wan Chu’er laughed, "Then we definitely shouldn’t perform together. Once we’re on stage, I’d steal all your thunder. Unless you bare it all, no one will notice you.

But, if you plan to bare it all, I don’t see why unrelated people should get a free show. Just take the guy to a hotel and bare it all directly for him."

After saying that, Wan Chu’er darted forward, escaping from Mai Qiqi’s "clutches."

"Wan Chu’er!" Mai Qiqi was so aggravated she felt itchy teeth.

Wan Chu’er turned back and winked at her, sending a vibe her way.

On the tree-lined path, a vibrant and lovely girl turned her head and playfully tossed a flirtatious glance, creating quite a charming scene.

That moment was caught by a male student nearby, who felt electrified, standing there dumbfounded until he saw the two girls laughing and walking away. Then he came to his senses and hurried after them.

"Mai Qiqi, Wan Chu’er—"

The two turned to look back, and Mai Qiqi chuckled, poking Wan Chu’er subtly and whispering, "Your suitor, Li Gang."

Wan Chu’er rolled her eyes, "I don’t know him; you handle it." Then she turned to leave.

Mai Qiqi grabbed her arm, "Don’t be like that, he’s here for you."

"Show monkey." As Li Gang was nearly upon them, Wan Chu’er muttered under her breath.

Mai Qiqi’s eyes lit up, "Really? Quick, quick, quick, get going. I’ll handle this big fly." She even gave Wan Chu’er a shove to make her escape faster.

After the afternoon class, Mai Qiqi took Wan Chu’er’s arm and headed towards the student union.

Wan Chu’er lifted her eyelids to glance at her and said, "I’m responsible for playing the fool, and you’re responsible for being the monkey?"

"Mai Qiqi!" Mai Qiqi clenched her teeth, her eyes darting around. She smiled and said, "Li Gang said he wants to treat everyone from our dorm to dinner, and his target is you, hehe."

The two joked and laughed, not realizing they had already arrived in front of the Student Council building.

Upon reaching the entrance, Wan Chu’er’s feet seemed firmly stuck to the ground, and no amount of pushing from Mai Qiqi could budge her.

"Chuchu, my dear Chuchu, please help me."

"If you help me this time, just say whatever you need next time."

"If we really win the championship, the reward of five thousand yuan is all yours."

"In the future, when the butterflies and bees come swooping at you, I’ll block them all for you."

"Stop!" Wan Chu’er interrupted Mai Qiqi’s babbling, asking, "A five thousand reward for the champion? That’s so generous, is it for real? Does the school have too much money to spend?"

Seeing a glimmer of hope, Mai Qiqi immediately explained, "This money isn’t from the school; it’s sponsorship from businesses pulled in by the Student Council, all to make a big splash at the welcome party and expand its influence."

Having spent over six thousand on a computer, she now had just over twenty thousand in hand, and who knows when she might need to make some big expenditures.

She didn’t know when she would be able to write software to sell, but now there was an opportunity to make money, and Wan Chu’er was somewhat tempted.

Seeing Wan Chu’er’s hesitation, Mai Qiqi immediately added fuel to the fire, talking up a storm until finally, Wan Chu’er made up her mind.

Mai Qiqi happily wrapped her arm around Wan Chu’er as they headed towards the Student Council office—they had to sign up first.

Having just turned a corner, the two overheard someone speaking around the corner ahead. Mai Qiqi quickly grabbed Wan Chu’er and gestured for silence.

"Wei Feng, I hope you don’t make things difficult for yourself."

A boy’s voice, the name Wei Feng mentioned, this name made both Mai Qiqi and Wan Chu’er hold their breath.

Wan Chu’er still remembered this voice; it belonged to Chen Xiran who she and Mai Qiqi had seen with Wei Feng before.

"Xiran, you know, studying abroad has always been my dream," Wei Feng’s somewhat melancholic voice quickly followed.

Chen Xiran: "You have a boyfriend, and he’s an officer."

Wei Feng: "Yes, he’s an officer, and a very outstanding one at that, I don’t deserve him."

Chen Xiran: "Wei Feng, you are excellent, you deserve anyone."

Mai Qiqi and Wan Chu’er exchanged a look, both their expressions somewhat uneasy.

After a while, Wei Feng said, "Xiran, do you know, these past years, I’ve actually been suffering a lot. He’s always busy, his work always comes before me, and now, when I see that military green, I actually feel repulsed."

Chen Xiran: "Wei Feng, don’t say that. They are busy for our safety and peace."

Wei Feng laughed, a rueful laugh, not sure if it was at herself or something else.

"On birthdays, others have boyfriends to celebrate with, I’ve never had that; when hurt, others have boyfriends to comfort them, I don’t; when I achieve something good, others have boyfriends to share with, I can only tell myself silently ’you did great’... hehe... Xiran, tell me, does having this boyfriend make any difference whether present or not?"

"Wei Feng, stop talking," Chen Xiran seemed to reach out and grab Wei Feng’s hand. novelbuddy.cσ๓

Wan Chu’er couldn’t bear to listen anymore, she didn’t wait for Mai Qiqi, turned around, and left. After a few seconds, Mai Qiqi silently followed behind Wan Chu’er and walked away.
