Chapter 32 -32: Parents Who Don’t Meddle in Affairs
Mei Yinan was naturally very happy to hear Mei Mengchen’s compliment, and seeing the child eat with such delight, she asked curiously, “Chenchen, what does your sister make for you to eat at home usually?”
“We have three meals, and sister cooks them all,” Mei Mengchen said with a bit of a proud tone because after all, her sister’s cooking was delicious.
This made Fan Hongwei curious, “Is your sister’s cooking tasty? What do you eat for each meal?”
Mei Yinan was also very interested in the topic, worrying the children might be reluctant to spend money and therefore eating poorly and not getting enough nutrition.

Mei Mengchen replied, “In the morning we have a big goose egg with milk, and also a cake.”
The term ‘cake’ was quite vague, so Mei Mengzhen explained, “The cakes are different every day, sometimes layered cake, sometimes purple potato cake, beef pancake, bought from the Supermarket, just heated up a bit and ready to eat.”
Mei Mengchen nodded and continued, “Yesterday at noon we had tomato and egg, stir-fried carrots with meat, and at night we ate corn and sweet potatoes.” Mei Mengchen wanted to mention the meals from a few days ago, but while he remembered what he ate for each meal, it took him some time to express it, so he only talked about last night’s dinner.
Mei Mengzhen had a reasonable plan for every meal, like the eggs and milk in the morning which were quite good, and noon included both greens and meat ensuring daily nutrition. You might think there are only two dishes, but since they are tasty and nutritious, the two of them, one adult and one child, could eat their fill. Therefore, there was no need for rice at night; it was fine to eat rough grains like sweet potatoes and corn, which she grew in her space; they lacked neither nutrition nor taste.
The couple couldn’t find anything to object to with these meals, but Mei Yinan always felt that it wasn’t quite right to just have sweet potatoes and corn for dinner, especially since both children were growing and needed nutrition. Just one nutritious meal at lunch wasn’t enough.
“Shouldn’t you eat rice at night? Just eating this, can you get by?” Mei Yinan said tactfully.
Mei Mengchen nodded, “It’s enough, I can’t eat any more rice. We had too much at noon.”
“Chenchen and I don’t eat leftovers. It’s wasteful to throw away food, so we finish our dishes at lunchtime, and by evening, we’re not that hungry.”
Fan Hongwei, however, thought this was quite good, “Actually, this way of eating is quite healthy. I’ve heard that people only really need two meals a day. If you’re not hungry, there’s no need to force it; eating rough grains is pretty good.”
Hearing Fan Hongwei agree, Mei Yinan didn’t refute, but when it came to health, “Maybe we should eat like this, too.”
“Your lunch is from leftovers. If you don’t eat at night, what will you have for lunch the next day? Moreover, we work outside and can only enjoy a nutritious, fresh meal in the evening. It’s a different situation.”
Different circumstances naturally require different approaches.
The large family polished off the four dishes and one soup for this lunch. After eating, the siblings sat for a while before leaving. Since they didn’t eat dinner, they didn’t need to stay for the evening meal.
Mei Yinan did not insist, “I still have a day off tomorrow, you guys should come to eat, too.”
“No need, Aunt. We’ll manage on our own at home. How about Brother Tianyu just comes over to my place today? Tomorrow is my last day off and I have a pile of things to do at home,” Mei Mengzhen suggested.
Fan Tianyu nodded, “Alright, I’ll come over later.”
Having said this, Mei Mengzhen left her aunt’s place with her brother.
Once Mei Mengzhen had left, Mei Yinan felt sorry for the siblings again. The talk at the dining table earlier, was eating two meals a day really for health? Or was it to save money?
Fan Hongwei said, “Haven’t you noticed how much whiter and plumper they’ve become in just a few days? Their mouths certainly haven’t been shortchanged. Hey, did you notice that Chenchen, now under Mengzhen’s care, has that shrewd look in his eyes that wasn’t there before? This shows that Mengzhen isn’t mistreating Chenchen. I don’t know what you’re worried about; you’re just worried about Chenchen fearing Mengzhen will neglect your family’s eldest grandchild. But don’t make it too obvious; after all, the siblings rely on each other. You don’t want to create a rift between them because of you.”
Her thoughts exposed, Mei Yinan was a little angry, “Hey, can’t you speak nicely? They are both my brother’s kids; I wouldn’t mistreat any of them. But isn’t Chenchen younger? If it’s not about saving money, how could they possibly have only one main meal a day?”
“You’re stuck on this ‘one main meal’. You’ve gone deaf to goose eggs and milk in the morning. Eating that every day is enough nutrition. I dare say Chenchen is doing much better with Mengzhen than with your brother and sister-in-law.”
Fan Hongwei disapproved of this couple, saying they wanted a son to carry on the family line, so they had a son. But once born, did they dote on him? Not only did they neglect their daughter, but there was also no sign of them doting on their son either.
Was it really about continuing the family line, or just wanting another person to divide the family wealth? Initially, upon hearing the house would go to Mengzhen, they were afraid of outsiders benefiting, so they had this son.
But this couple only put on an act in public; privately, everyone knew what they were really like. Other than feeding Chenchen, what have they done? They were always competing with Old Six, Mei Yongfu; when he took his son on a trip, they insisted on doing the same, even negligently losing track of people during outings.
It might not have mattered much if the couple had left, but hadn’t they harmed Mengzhen and Chenchen? How simple could it be for a minor to take care of such a young brother?
Now she worried about college entrance exams, but when it came time for Mengzhen to attend university, wouldn’t she want to date? Anyone hearing she takes care of a brother in kindergarten would have to think twice.
Anyway, this couple hadn’t done anything decent, leaving behind many troubles. He knew he shouldn’t speak like this, but he really felt this couple got what they deserved.
And in this matter, it was clearly Mengzhen who suffered the most. He didn’t want to say more, after all, they weren’t his own children, but he still had to be fair.
“Do you think I can’t see that? I just feel sorry for Chenchen because he’s young and never got to enjoy his parents’ love.”
Fan Hongwei snorted, “Mengzhen made it to 17 with these two, but how much parental love did she actually enjoy from them? It’s good that she’s willing to take care of Chenchen now, and he hasn’t suffered any grievances. The two sensible kids will rely on each other and can have each other’s backs in the future. If you favor Chenchen too much and cause Mengzhen to feel resentful, what will you do if you harm their sibling relationship? You can’t help Chenchen forever, you know.”
“No, what do you mean by that? I didn’t say anything,” Mei Yinan, taken aback by Fan Hongwei’s barrage of words, replied.
“I’m reminding you to nip these possibilities in the bud before you even start, to prevent doing something wrong again. And right now, I quite admire Mengzhen; she’s adjusted her mindset quickly after such a big event, and haven’t you guys noticed how much happier and more open she’s become? This is a good sign, to be able to adapt so quickly to such a big change. A person with such a character will have no trouble handling big things in the future.”
