Chapter 75 -75: Is Selling Vegetables Really That Tiring? (3/3)
Just as Mei Yongfu was about to lose his temper, Mei Yinan brought out the dishes right on time.
The old house was never soundproof, to say nothing of the kitchen being right next to the living room. Mei Yinan, from the kitchen, heard everything that went on in the living room crystal clear. She knew that her son talking back to his elders was wrong, but she felt it wouldn’t hurt for the elders to be rebuked as well when they were out of line.
In the past, she would have intervened at once, but after what had happened at Mei Mengzhen’s place, she had completely lost faith in her siblings. They had grown too arrogant and needed to be put in their place.
But enough was enough, and things shouldn’t go too far all at once, so she brought out the food at just the right moment.
As soon as Mei Yinan appeared, the tensions were like flames doused with water. They couldn’t do much about it—Mei Yinan’s forcefulness was something they genuinely feared.
The house was full of people, and a lot of food had been prepared. Mei Yinan’s family normally ate at a small square table, but when guests arrived, they would add a round board on top to expand the space. No matter how much they expanded it, though, it was impossible to seat so many people in their home.
Four from the eldest aunt’s family, three from the eldest uncle’s, three from the second aunt’s, three from the youngest aunt’s, four from the youngest uncle’s, and two from their own—adding up to 19 in total, quite the large clan. When the father and mother of the Mei family were still around, they would split into two tables at the eldest aunt’s house—adults at one table and children eating at the coffee table—fitting everyone just barely.
This year, the eldest aunt arranged it the same way, but the situation changed when Mei Yinan came out with more dishes.
Just moments ago, the eldest uncle’s family, the youngest uncle’s family, and the youngest aunt’s family had unceremoniously taken their kids and seated themselves at the large round table. These three families were quite large to begin with, and they crowded the table so much that they started eating with their chopsticks right away without any hesitation.
Considering that the eldest aunt hadn’t finished serving all the dishes yet, it had become clear who had no manners.

Standing behind them with a dish in hand, Mei Yinan watched with interest. The eldest uncle, sitting opposite the eldest aunt, quickly said, “Big sister, put the dishes here.” He even pointed his chopsticks towards an empty spot as if to say hurry up and place it.
Everyone heard the eldest uncle, turned around to look, and the two sitting directly in front of Mei Yinan even shifted to make space for her to place the dish.
Mei Yinan found the whole situation laughable. They didn’t leave her any room at the table but still expected to eat the food she made? With a turn, she placed the dish on the coffee table and said to her second aunt’s family and those who hadn’t been seated, “Go ahead and eat.”
Then, without paying any attention to the others, she headed back to the kitchen and continued to set all the dishes on the coffee table.
The youngest aunt, Mei Yifan, was not happy with this, “Big sister, what do you mean? You’re not even serving us food when we come to your house for a meal?”
Mei Yinan put down the dish in her hand with a thud and coldly said, “I don’t want to curse at you all during the festival. How did we eat before, and how are we eating now? Do you think you’re at a banquet? We work hard to prepare a meal to entertain you, and you don’t even leave us a space to sit. What, you want to eat quickly and then just leave as soon as you finish?”
Everyone naturally knew it was wrong to seat themselves like that, but they did it to spite ‘certain people.’ Seeing Mei Yinan on the verge of losing her temper, they hurriedly made the children stand up, “Go, eat somewhere else. There’s no place for you here, and you’re sitting there so comfortably.”
Mei Yifan shifted the blame onto the children, but everyone knew full well whether it was the kids’ idea or the adults’.
No one wanted trouble during the holiday, and thankfully, it was just the one lunch. After eating, they could quickly get rid of these nuisances.
Everyone took their respective places, and the sharp remarks naturally decreased. Of course, the dishes made by Mei Yinan took center stage. For those tasting food from the ‘space’ for the first time, there wasn’t much time to talk—they were too busy eating and drinking, and after finishing touched their bellies ready to leave.
As always after a meal at Mei Yinan’s place, the first to leave were always Mei Yifan’s family, followed by the youngest uncle, Mei Yongfu’s family, then the eldest uncle, Mei Yongan’s family. The last to leave were usually the least noticeable: the second aunt, Mei Yifang’s family.
After a meal with the whole family, they all put down their chopsticks and walked away, leaving the clearing up to the Fan Family. The second aunt, Mei Yifang, always offered to help, but the eldest aunt would not allow it.
Mei Mengzhen was not in a hurry to go home, she and her brother began to help tidy up.
Mei Yinan quickly intervened, “Zhenzhen, Chenchen, don’t bother, it’s dirty.”
“It’s fine, you just pull the tablecloth and it’s done.” That was true—because of the number of people, the house didn’t have that many sets of dishes and bowls, so most of the plates were disposable, except for the large soup bowls and spoons. With so many people there, there wouldn’t be much food left. Pile the trash in the middle, wrap it up with the tablecloth, and the cleaning is done. Then she passed it to Fan Tianyu, who threw it away downstairs and that was that.
Mei Mengzhen, along with her brother, was getting ready to leave when Fan Tianyu said, “Wait for me, let me finish throwing away the trash, and we’ll go together.”
“Okay,” Mei Mengzhen agreed and then sat down again with her brother.
With so many people around just now, it wasn’t appropriate to ask about the business at the Vegetable Market. The couple had been itching to know, and as soon as she finished her tasks, Mei Yinan quickly asked, “How’s it going? Was the business good at your brother’s stall this morning?”
“Good? It was way too busy; I had a headache from all the rushing around in the morning, and I’m only just feeling a bit better after eating,” Fan Tianhua immediately asked, “Dad, Mom, are you going to help out tomorrow?”
Whether or not to help aside, they did want to see the business for themselves. Mei Yinan nodded subtly.
Fan Tianhua sighed, looking at the ceiling with a somewhat absent gaze, “Tiring, really too tiring. I feel this can’t go on. If it’s like this for too long, my brother really won’t be able to handle it.”
Just when Fan Tianyu came back in after throwing away the trash, he heard Fan Tianhua’s last remark, and puzzled, he asked, “Can’t handle what? Who can’t handle it? Does someone in our family have health issues?”
Everyone turned to look at him, with a look that said, are you dumb? No one felt like speaking.
Fan Tianyu was confused, “What’s going on? Talk to me.”
“We’re talking about you. Your business is too good; you really won’t be able to keep up if it continues like this. You need to think of a solution,” Fan Tianhua thought for a moment then added, “Brother, what if we rent another shop space right where you sell vegetables? You can move all the vegetables there in the morning—since you only have that much to sell each day—and then hire someone to package the vegetables. You could help a little and take care of the money. What do you think? Sure, it’ll cost some money, but this way you’d be a bit relaxed.”
Mei Yinan and Fan Hongwei looked at their children, with a little bit of speechlessness in their eyes, “Is selling vegetables really that exhausting?”
