Chapter 192: Chapter 192 Poor Family

At this hour, it was the time when every family began their meal, and yet Mo Yaner came back with a gloomy expression on her face. Knowing the Mo family as she did, Xuexue guessed what might have happened and deliberately said, “Could it be that Big Sister has already eaten her fill? Certainly, the food at the Mo family’s place is better than eating sweet potatoes here.” In the end, she added with a smile, “Isn’t that right, Big Sister?”

Mo Yaner’s face darkened even further, and she was awkwardly unsure whether to sit down or leave.

It was Madam Xie who quickly stood up, pulling her to the table to sit down: “Yanyan, come and eat, Xuexue is just teasing you.”

Only then did Mo Yaner, less embarrassed, smoothly take a seat.

Xuexue was angry because Mo Yaner couldn’t bear to see them having a good life or eating slightly better, claiming they were stealing the Mo family’s money to buy food. There wasn’t much rice left at home, and she didn’t go to buy any, planning to hold out for a few days on sweet potatoes instead. After all, the Mo family had distributed a few bags of sweet potatoes, so they still had plenty, which meant that the old residence would be eating sweet potatoes every day for the next few days.

Madam Xie pitied her two little grandsons, planning to save the remaining rice for the little steamed buns to eat, while the adults could just make do with sweet potatoes.

Madam Xie served each of the three little steamed buns a bowl of rice, and Li Feng looked on eagerly, but was surprised to find that when it came to his turn, there was no more left. He was slightly taken aback, thinking his mother-in-law must have had some issue with him, resenting him for freeloading at their home, and his complexion turned unnatural.

“Wife, sweet potatoes taste good, both fragrant and sweet,” Big Bull had never been picky with food and could down three large bowls of anything.

“If they’re so tasty, then have a few more,” Xuexue laughed.

“Mm! Wife, you should have some, too,” Big Bull ate with relish, alternating between sweet potatoes and loaches, unfazed by the mix of salty and sweet flavors, his appetite was excellent.

This was utterly different from Li Feng’s sullen face.

“Only a fool would think these are tasty,” Mo Yaner sneered disdainfully, considering such foods as mere subsistence crops used by the poor when there wasn’t enough grain, finding nothing delicious about them and labeling anyone who did as an idiot.

“What’s wrong? Big Sister doesn’t like it?” Xuexue’s ears pricked up.

“So what if I like it, and what if I don’t? Can you conjure up a bowl of rice for Big Sister to eat?” Mo Yaner was not one to be trifled with and shot back with her retort straight away.

“You say there isn’t any, but there actually is,” Xuexue said, standing tall.

“There is?”

“There is.”

“Since there is, why do you still cook these disgusting things for us to eat? Are you looking down on your Big Sister?” Mo Yaner was infuriated.

“Mother, go steam some rice for them,” Xuexue turned to Madam Xie with a generous air.

“There’s not much rice left; it’s saved for Tuantuan and Yuanyuan and Chuner to eat,” Madam Xie said, her face showing her dilemma.

At that moment, the three little steamed buns were happily eating their rice with loaches, bite by bite.

“It’s not up to you, an outsider, to feel pain for Big Sister’s children if their own mother doesn’t. Go ahead and steam it, and use up all the rice today. Tomorrow, let these three little steamed buns join us in gnawing on sweet potatoes,” Xuexue said leisurely, taking a bite of the sweet potato in her hand.

“This…,”

Madam Xie’s face showed her difficulty, but in the end, she stomped her foot and stood up, ready to head to the kitchen to steam rice for her eldest daughter and son-in-law.

“Smack!”

Mo Yaner threw her chopsticks down in a fit of rage: “Mo Xueer, you’ve gone too far, I’m your elder sister, is this how you talk to me?”

“What have I done now? Big Sister doesn’t like sweet potatoes, so I’m having Mother steam you rice, aren’t I? In what way have I been bad to you?” Xuexue shrugged, feigning innocence.

“You’re still pretending? Ever since I came back home, you’ve been sarcastic and scornful towards me, never showing me a bit of kindness,” Mo Yaner accused.

“Then Big Sister, you should really reflect on what good deeds you’ve done. Why would your sister treat you this way?” Xuexue asked.
