Chapter 30: Chapter 030: Escape for Your Life

Their number was not small, consisting of men, women, elderly, and children, but the number of disaster survivors was too great, and these people were scattered among them, so they did not attract attention.

They were always hunched over, when encountering questioning disaster survivors, they would bow their heads and bend their waists to answer in a humble manner, dispelling the vigilance of the survivors, who thought they were just survivors who had followed later and, seeing their small numbers, did not pay much attention to them.

But Gu Jinli discovered that among the newcomers, some had eyes tinged red, and their faces had an abnormal flush—even if their skin was tanned dark, it was still clearly visible.

And the fierce light in their eyes was not as humble as they appeared to be.

Gu Jinli was a military doctor, and upon first seeing these people, she understood something, she knew trouble was brewing and quietly warned Gu Dashan and the others while on the move, "Father, those people are terrifying. We should not get close to them, and if they come to talk to us, we should ignore them."

Gu Dashan and the others were not very brave, and the Village Chief had also instructed, during the escape, not to interact with unfamiliar faces. Nodding in agreement, "Xiao Yu, rest assured, Dad knows. We’ll just focus on our journey, we won’t meddle in other matters."

After cutting ties with the Old Gu Family, these past few days the Old Gu Family had continually been causing trouble for their family, and Gu Dashan felt that being the head of the household now, he had become more forceful and decisive than before.

The Luo Family and Third Grandpa’s Family were close to them, and Father Luo had also noticed those people. Hearing Gu Jinli’s words, he whispered a warning: "Xiao Yu is right, we should stay further away from those people. They have blood on their hands."

The words ’having blood on their hands’ alarmed the families, instilling fear in them.

Despite having a brave heart, Luo Huiniang tightened her grip on Ms. Chu’s hand and whispered softly, "Mom."

Ms. Chu patted her hand, reassuring, "Don’t be scared, your mom and dad are here."

Then she turned to Father Luo, "Head of the house, you need to go tell the village chief about this, to give everyone a heads-up."

Father Luo nodded and grunted in agreement, casting a glance at those people before quickly averting his gaze.

In the evening during the rest period, Father Luo and Gu Dashan did not follow the village group to find food, but instead joined Third Grandpa to inform the Village Chief about the unusual behavior of those people.

The village chief was surprised upon hearing this and asked Father Luo, "Tie Zhu, are you sure about this? This is no joking matter."

Father Luo nodded firmly, with a serious tone said, "Village Chief, those people have done more than just kill, their eyes are different from ours."

Village Chief Gu, being an experienced elder, understood the implications of Father Luo’s words, his hands trembled and after a moment of stunned silence, he said, "I understand. Both of you go back and rest for now. Tonight you still have to stay up and keep watch."

Father Luo reminded, "Village Chief, our village is no match for those people, we need to inform the other disaster survivors, we can only repel them by joining together."

Village Chief Gu, with his head lowered and not looking at Father Luo, responded, "I understand, don’t worry."

Third Grandpa knew Village Chief Gu well; he was a timid man who least wanted to bring trouble to the village. Understanding his intention to conceal the information and just protect their own village, Third Grandpa said, "Old friend, those people dared to infiltrate in, their numbers are certainly not small, all ruthless individuals with bloodshed on their hands. If they cause chaos during the night, there will be rivers of blood here; can you bear to keep silent and watch others die?"

Hearing this, Village Chief Gu’s face paled instantly, after pondering for a moment, he finally relented, "Old brother, you’re right. Now that we know of this, we can’t keep it hidden, we must go and inform everyone."

Village Chief Gu and Third Grandpa went together to seek other village and clan leaders, informing them about the strange behaviors of those strangers and asked them to be prepared.

Father Luo and Gu Dashan did not go with them, afraid of drawing attention, they waited at Village Chief Gu’s resting place, and only followed Third Grandpa back to their family’s resting place after Village Chief Gu and Third Grandpa returned.

Gu Jinli approached and asked, "Third Grandpa, Dad, Uncle Luo, what’s the situation? What did the village chief say?"

Gu Dashan said, "Your grandpa village chief and Third Grandpa went to tell other village chiefs, everyone is now aware and will be prepared, don’t worry."

Gu Jinli breathed a sigh of relief; it’s good that way, the victims can only defeat those people by uniting.

But she was worried again that the victims were not united and would scatter at the first sign of trouble, but these were beyond her ability to change; she had done everything she could.

In the following days, disaster-stricken victims who had fled began to increase patrols, but for five consecutive days, nothing happened, and those unfamiliar faces gradually disappeared, their whereabouts unknown.

The victims were very happy, thinking that those people knew they were united and, therefore, were scared and left, but Gu Jinli did not think so. She was even more worried. How did those people disappear? Where did they hide? freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

Each village began to reduce their night guards, but in Gu Family Village, under Third Grandpa’s insistence, there were still twenty strong men on guard every night.

The unexpected happened on the third day after the guards were relaxed.

In the dead of night, when people were in their deepest sleep, a sudden scream was heard.

Gu Jinli was awakened instantly by the scream, looked into the distance, and saw a group of people with swords, shovels, and hoes attacking the sleeping victims.

After killing the victims, those people did not start robbing but spread out to continue attacking the still clueless victims, obviously commanded to kill and scatter these victims before splitting their possessions.

Watching in horror, Gu Jinli screamed, "Something’s happened! Something’s happened! Wake up!"

She woke Mrs. Cui and Gu Jinxiu next to her, tied two bamboo tubes of water and a bag of flour around herself, gripped the dagger Qi Yi had given her, and after Mrs. Cui woke up, she shoved the still dazed Brother Cheng into her hands, "Mom, we need to escape for our lives!"

Third Grandpa, Third Grandma, Ms. Chu, and Luo Huiniang were all awoken by her shouting, and seeing the situation in the distance, their legs went weak with fear.

Having experienced such events before, Third Grandpa immediately roared, "Pack up, we need to escape!"

Gu Family Village’s night guards also noticed the situation in the distance and started shouting loudly, continuously striking the wooden clapper to alert everyone, "Murder! Murder! Everyone, run for your lives!"

Countless victims were woken by the screams, shouts, and clapper sounds, seeing the tragedy before them, many were too frightened to move. By the time they reacted, instead of thinking about picking up sticks to fight back, they panicked and ran in all directions.

Gu Dashan and his sons, along with Luo Family’s father and son, ran back from the night guard team and told everyone, "Run, those people are coming to kill us, the village chief told us to gather and escape immediately."

Gu Jinli and the others had already tied everything they could carry onto themselves. Seeing them returning, the group supported each other and ran towards the back, to converge with the villagers.

But before they could reach the village chief’s resting place, another group of people charged from the side, killing anyone they saw.
