Chapter 34 - 100,000 Points?
Theos called out, his voice slicing cleanly through the dense forest air. "Xiphos!"
Xiphos, who had been anxiously scanning the terrain, froze at the familiar voice. Relief flooded his face instantly. Despite his exhaustive efforts, he hadn't managed to locate Theos amidst the strange disturbances plaguing the forest—beasts had turned erratic and unpredictable, their behavior aggressive and unsettling. Now, hearing that familiar voice, the tight knot of worry inside him finally loosened.
He broke into a swift run, waving his hand in relief. Lyra, who had been cautiously moving alongside him, paused for a brief moment. Her eyes flicked thoughtfully between the two friends before she quietly turned away to join the other contestants who were gathering nearby.
Xiphos quickly reached Theos, concern etched deeply into his usually composed features. "Theos, are you okay?" he asked urgently.
"Of course," Theos replied, flashing a wide, carefree grin. "What could possibly happen to me?"
Before Xiphos could respond, Selene, Eryk, Arlen, and Lyra approached with curious expressions.
Selene crossed her arms, a playful smirk on her lips. "Hey, Theos, Xiphos—how many points did you two score?"
Xiphos opened his mouth, ready to answer—
A thunderous boom shook the ground beneath their feet, resonating through the open field. Waves of Spirit Energy rolled outward, drawing gasps and wide-eyed stares toward the soundstage.
The Head Instructor materialized suddenly from thin air, exuding authority and commanding attention with his powerful presence. "Form ten lines—quickly!" he ordered sharply. "I will announce the results."
Immediately, the contestants scrambled into position, anxiety rippling through their ranks.
"The minimum required to pass the trial was 1,000 points," the instructor began coldly, his voice heavy with disappointment. "Only four hundred of you succeeded. This is the lowest success rate we've seen in years. Last time, over three thousand passed. Pathetic."
Suddenly, the instructor unleashed a wave of overwhelming Spirit Pressure. Many contestants collapsed, gasping desperately for air. Legs buckled, bodies trembled, and several fell unconscious from the immense force.
But standing unwavering amidst the chaos were Theos and Xiphos.
Theos smirked confidently, and with deliberate ease, he released his killing intent. Immediately, an intense, chilling aura filled the air, sharp and suffocating. Sparks crackled visibly where the instructor's Spirit Pressure clashed against Theos's raw, potent killing intent, forcing more contestants to their knees.
The Head Instructor's eyes narrowed, intrigued. After a tense moment, he withdrew his energy with a faint smile. Theos mirrored his gesture, retracting his killing intent calmly.
"Well," the instructor remarked approvingly, "some of you actually show promise."
Selene and the others stared at Theos in stunned silence, fully understanding the magnitude of what they'd witnessed. Intent was more than just pressure—it was the manifestation of pure mental willpower, the tangible projection of a cultivator's very spirit. Among intents, killing intent was the deadliest and hardest to cultivate. It required absolute mastery of emotion, morality, and fear, an intimate embrace of death itself, embodying its very essence. Even seasoned warriors from renowned clans struggled to cultivate true killing intent.
But Theos's killing intent had been monstrous, far surpassing anything they'd ever felt before. Whispers of awe and disbelief echoed among the contestants as they slowly rose to their feet.
An assistant instructor stepped forward, a scroll in hand. "Begin the results," the Head Instructor commanded.
The assistant began reading names aloud, tension thickening with each score announced:
"Rey – 1,000 points." "Tara – 1,000 points." ... "Arlen – 3,500 points." "Eryk – 3,900 points." "Selene – 4,500 points." "Lyra – 6,000 points."
Gasps of astonishment erupted with each name. The contestants marveled at the extraordinary scores, knowing that such results already marked them as exceptional.
Yet the four named contestants exchanged glances. The scores had been announced in ascending order, and neither Theos nor Xiphos had yet been mentioned.
A heavy silence settled over the assembly.
"Xiphos – 10,600 points," the instructor finally announced reverently.
Shock rippled through the crowd. Cries of disbelief erupted. "He cheated!" "That's impossible!"
"Silence!" the Head Instructor thundered, instantly quelling all accusations. "Continue."

The instructor unrolled the last part of the scroll, voice trembling with awe: "And finally...Theos – 20,000 points."
Stunned silence gripped the field. Mouths hung open, knees buckled, and many sank to the ground, utterly overwhelmed.
"How can we ever compete with that?" whispers rippled through the ranks. "Are they even human?"
Theos stood silent and unmoving, his expression impassive, yet a fierce fire burned deep in his eyes.
The Head Instructor stepped forward once more, commanding immediate attention. "All who performed well will fare better within the Heavenly Star Sect. Here, everything—from food to accommodations—can be bought using your points. Each month you will receive a certain amount based on your talent. Tomorrow, your aptitude will be assessed, determining your initial place of training."
He continued clearly, his voice echoing with authority. "The Heavenly Star Sect has three primary layers: the Outer Circle, Inner Circle, and Core Circle, each divided further into four parts—north, south, east, and west—assigned according to talent. Greater talent yields greater resources. However," his voice softened slightly, filled with genuine encouragement, "even without immense talent, courage and relentless determination to challenge fate will always be rewarded."
He paused briefly, scanning the crowd. "For today, rest. You will be moved to your rooms shortly. If you wish to remain together, ensure physical contact. Otherwise, you will be placed separately."
Theos and Xiphos exchanged a brief, understanding nod. Theos placed his hand firmly on Xiphos's shoulder.
With a sharp snap of the instructor's fingers, everyone transformed into streaks of brilliant light and vanished, leaving only the Head Instructor behind.
"That child Theos possesses strength comparable to direct disciples of elders," he murmured thoughtfully. "Xiphos is also exceptional; he can easily become a core disciple." With a pleased smile, he too vanished. Immediately after his departure, the space itself began collapsing inward, disappearing into a singular point before vanishing entirely.
Theos and Xiphos landed gently in a spacious room containing two comfortable beds. Through the wide balcony window, a sprawling city glittered beneath the warm, golden hues of the setting sun.
Utterly exhausted, both boys nearly collapsed onto their beds, a profound sense of achievement washing over them. Six months of grueling exertion, hardship, and relentless determination had culminated in this very moment.
'I've done it, Master,' Xiphos thought silently, pride swelling within him.
Staring up at the ceiling, Theos clenched his fist resolutely. 'Mom, Dad... wait for me,' he vowed silently.
Xiphos sat up, curiosity overriding his exhaustion. "Hey, how did you even get 20,000 points? It was unbelievably tough just getting 10,000 myself."
Theos laughed lightly, amused by Xiphos's shock. "Actually," he admitted with a mischievous glint in his eyes, "it's not 20,000 points. It's 100,000 points."
Xiphos stared in absolute disbelief. "What? How is that even possible?"
Theos smiled broadly, taking a deep breath as he began recounting his incredible experiences. "Well, when I landed in the forest..."
As Theos shared his thrilling account, the room filled with animated laughter and gasps of astonishment. Eventually, their storytelling was interrupted by a soft knock at the door. Rising from his bed with effort, Xiphos opened the door to find a young attendant holding a large tray laden with steaming dishes. The savory aromas of freshly baked bread, spiced meats, and hearty stew instantly flooded the room, making their mouths water.
"Dinner for the esteemed disciples," the attendant said respectfully, bowing slightly as he placed the heavy tray carefully onto a small table by the balcony. "Courtesy of the Heavenly Star Sect. Congratulations on your outstanding results."
"Thank you," Theos responded warmly, offering a grateful smile as he moved to inspect the food. The attendant nodded politely before quietly exiting the room, closing the door behind him.
Theos and Xiphos eagerly approached the tray. Their eyes brightened with delight as they saw succulent roasted meats glazed with honey, bowls of rich vegetable stew topped with herbs, and soft loaves of bread accompanied by creamy butter and fragrant cheese.
"Looks like the sect takes care of its promising disciples," Xiphos remarked, his voice tinged with amusement.
"Definitely," Theos replied enthusiastically, quickly tearing off a generous chunk of bread. "Let's not waste it."
They ate with relish, savoring every bite. After months of survival on minimal and often flavorless rations, each mouthful was a delightful experience, rejuvenating both their bodies and spirits. They chatted softly between bites, recounting humorous incidents from their trials and sharing their anticipation for the days ahead.
Finally, as the dishes emptied and their hunger was sated, exhaustion overtook them once more. With satisfied sighs, they returned to their beds, gazing thoughtfully at the ceiling.
"Tomorrow's another big day," Xiphos murmured sleepily.
"Yeah," Theos replied softly, closing his eyes with a contented smile. "But tonight, I am gonna rest like there is no tomorrow."
Outside, the sun fully dipped below the horizon, blanketing the sprawling city in the comforting embrace of twilight, a perfect close to a day filled with trials, triumphs, and promise. The two friends quickly drifted into deep, restful sleep, ready for whatever new challenges awaited them tomorrow.
