Through thermal imaging, the entity's movement was clear as day. At nearly absolute zero, wherever it moved, the water vapor in the air flash-froze, leaving behind a trailing signature. Unlike heat, which dissipates rapidly, extreme cold takes much longer to equalize with the surrounding temperature.
Meaning—it left a trail Zack could follow. And so he did. The chase was on. The Apex Mk2's engines roared as Zack pursued the fading blue streak, tracing it all the way back to the hospital—the same place Hank and the others had originally entered.
The trail led straight through the hospital's outer wall... And vanished inside. Zack halted mid-air, hovering roughly 100 meters above the building. Instead of following immediately, he paused. Then—he removed the VR neural link. "Ego, take over."
"Understood, Sir."
"Keep the armor positioned above the hospital—don't engage, just keep tracking. I'll handle things from here."
"Affirmative." With that, Zack pushed himself up from the recliner, stretching out his arms. Then, he grabbed a sketchbook, flipped it open, and started scribbling blueprints. Since he had obtained mechanical arms and started developing insect-like robotic constructs, this was the first time he had personally felt the urge to craft something himself. His voice was low. "...If ghosts can be explained...Then they can be destroyed."
Zack rolled out several schematics across his worktable. "The BEC entity is physical. It cannot pass through ceramic. Ceramic bullets might disrupt its structure... but to kill it? The matter itself has to be fundamentally destabilized." One by one, he burned the excess schematics. Until only one remained. Then, without hesitation—he got to work.
Back at the hospital, the Apex Mk2 remained airborne, monitoring everything through thermal imaging. And then—something changed. "Sir," Ego's voice crackled in the background. "Multiple entities detected."
Zack froze. "...Define 'multiple.'" The holographic display flickered on. On the hospital's thermal scan, several dark blue figures had appeared—all humanoid. One was already chilling enough. But now there were many. And just like before—when the thermal imaging was turned off... They completely vanished.
Zack narrowed his eyes. It wasn't just one 'ghost.' There were more. A lot more. At the same time that Apex Mk2 sent back the latest thermal imaging data, Zack had just finished constructing his newest weapon.
Although he had personally assembled it, the mechanical arms in his workshop had played a crucial role in the process. Now, resting before him was a massive, oddly shaped firearm.
At first glance, it resembled a giant toy water gun—but that illusion shattered the moment one noticed the gleaming metallic finish, the thick power cables running along its body, and the violent pulses of electrical energy flickering inside. This wasn't a toy. This was a weapon of pure destruction. Zack lifted it with both hands. Even with his enhanced strength—fourteen times that of an average person— he could feel the weight dragging at his arms.
That alone spoke volumes about its power. "Plasma emitter." The name rolled off his tongue as he tested its grip. "If that ghost thing really is condensed matter, then this gun will let it experience what it means to be utterly obliterated."
Plasma weapons. At their core, they were high-energy weapons that utilized superheated plasma to burn, disintegrate, or outright vaporize targets. What made this particularly interesting was the contrast in fundamental physics between the plasma weapon and the Bose-Einstein Condensate. BEC matter exists at temperatures close to absolute zero (-273.16°C). Plasma exists at temperatures ranging from hundreds of thousands to even millions of degrees.
One was the coldest state of matter. The other was the hottest. It was the ultimate contrast, the absolute battlefield of extremes. In theory, no material could withstand the full power of a plasma weapon, since no known structure could survive those temperatures.
However, due to practical limitations, the weapon Zack had built wasn't a planet-melting death ray—it was more of a "youth edition" plasma weapon. Still, for something made of pure quantum-cooled matter, it was more than enough. "Sir, would you like to test the weapon?" Ego's voice chimed in.
"What's there to test?" Zack scoffed. "You doubting my craftsmanship now, Ego?" To prove his point, he gestured toward a nearby unmanned power armor. "Bring me a spare suit. I'll send the gun to Apex Mk2."
"Understood, Sir." Moments later, a drone unit descended into the mansion. Zack tossed the plasma emitter to it, then leaned back onto his recliner. With one motion, he put on the VR neural control headset.
The screen lit up. The moment the neurofeedback system activated, he was inside Apex Mk2, hovering over the hospital. "Alright, let's see—" He scanned the thermal imaging. His brow furrowed. "...Damn."
Inside the hospital, dark blue humanoid shapes appeared across the imaging. There were at least seven or eight. "Making BEC matter takes insane amounts of energy... No way these things were created here. So why the hell are they gathering here?"
He lowered Apex Mk2's altitude, bringing it closer to the building. The moment he did— The figures moved. They rushed toward the windows, clustering like predators sensing prey. "...Smart.They're not just mindless blobs. They have instincts."
As Apex Mk2 hovered at about twenty to thirty meters, two of the entities suddenly leaped off the rooftop, charging straight at him. Zack's thermal visor tracked their movements. They were fast. Each step they took launched them meters into the air, their movements unnatural, almost weightless—as if they were running on the surface of the moon.
Ego's analysis came in. "Sir, the density of the target appears extremely low—comparable to radon gas."
Zack smirked. "Great. If I had known that, I'd have brought a damn electric fan." Raising his hand, he fired immediately.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Three high-energy particle beams burst from his palm cannon, streaking toward the incoming figures. Direct hit. In thermal imaging, Zack could clearly see the impact— Three holes burned straight through their bodies. But... They kept moving.
The particle beams pierced through them like a bullet through mist—they weren't dense enough for the heat to cause significant damage. The creatures didn't even flinch. Still flying toward him. Zack frowned. "Activate force field barrier." The energy shield engaged just as the entities reached him.
Boom! Boom!
Both figures slammed into the shield, repelled instantly. And for a fraction of a second— They became visible. Their true forms were revealed. Translucent blue humanoid figures, shifting and unstable, their outlines flickering as they struggled to maintain shape. Their presence lasted only a moment before they became invisible again.
Zack wasn't surprised. Instead, he simply chuckled. "See? As long as you're not an actual ghost... you're nothing special." Because science had already torn away the mystery. It was just like a game. No matter how terrifying the monster... Once it has a health bar, it's just EXP waiting to be farmed.
