Chapter 27 - VOLUME 2 Chapter 10: Dimming Star

VOLUME 2 Chapter 10: Dimming Star.

Her soft fox ears flicked once before settling as she stepped forward without a word. A small wave of applause rose as she moved, though she paid them no mind.

'Hmph!, a bunch of side characters' she mused, her inner monologue cool as ice. 'Watch as someone with real talent shows you how it's done '

She walked to the edge of the first row and, without hesitation, leapt from the elevated seating toward the stage. Her landing was smooth, barely a whisper on the stone. More applause broke out at the sight. A few gasps followed.

Sayaka approached the pedestal where the small caged spirit floated lazily, yawning within its confinement.

When Sayaka's hand touched the cage, a sharp pulse of magic radiated outward. A blinding light shot upward from the base, spiraling like a tower before vanishing in a single blink.

The spirit blinked, Then sighed.

"Huh. Guess all that arrogance wasn't just for show," it muttered, voice shrill and tired. "Legendary potential class detected. 'Moon God's Touched.' Figures."

Gasps and whispers filled the hall, Some students were dumbfounded to the point of their jaws dropping.

"Moon God's...?"

"Isn't that a mythical-type support and assault hybrid?"

"No way..."

" What did I tell you, Miss Tsukishiro is really amazing isn't she!"

" Incredible!, She really does live up to the Tsukishiro name."

Sayaka tilted her chin up a fraction, her expression unreadable. But inside, she was alight with satisfaction from the constant voices filled with awe and praise.

'Hmph...lets see anyone top that.'

While Sayaka was acting as stiff as she always was, Kenshin scribbled something with the tip of his armored finger. Next to Sayaka's name on the parchment, glowing letters appeared: A1.

"Class A1," he said bluntly. "Next."

Sayaka opened her mouth to speak, but Kenshin cut her off with a single raised gauntlet.

"Off the stage," he ordered, bored. "I don't have all day to watch mangy foxes pose."

She frowned slightly, subtly gnashing her fangs at the instructor but inside she knew better than to retort to this troublesome Academy staff Infront of her.

' Just keep acting as smug as you like, let's see how proud you'll be when my father learns of this.' Sayaka turned and walked off, ignoring the cheers that trailed behind her.

Kenshin rolled his neck with a crack. "At this rate, we'll be here 'til moonrise. Change of plans. You'll come up in batches of ten."

He raised his boot and stomped down with a deep boom that echoed through the air like a war drum.

"Anyone caught slacking, skipping, or wasting time will be disqualified on the spot," he added lazily. "Now sit tight 'til I call your name."

In time, several students in batches of ten were called out. Some were lucky and got Advanced Potential Classes, most got intermediate while some rare few got Legendary Classes like Sayaka.

Meanwhile, Hitoshi leaned forward in his seat, his elbows resting on his knees as he stared blankly at the stage. His shoulders were stiff, and he chewed at the inside of his cheek.

'What kinda class am I gonna get...?'

Out of the corner of his eye, he glanced at Aiko.

"What?" she said flatly, catching his look. "Can't stand to go a moment without pestering your master?"

Hitoshi let out a light sigh. "Nothing," he mumbled. "Just thinkin'... You're probably gonna get some super cool class like that Tsukishiro girl."

' Hmph!, of course I will.' Aiko scoffed in her head.

Hitoshi fortunately didn't hear her remark, he tapped his fingers on his thigh, eyes drifting down to his lap. "And I'll probably get stuck with something dumb... like 'Sock Washer' or 'Mop Knight' or something."

' Huh?... what's he saying '

Aiko blinked, her brow twitching. "You... really are stupid sometimes."

Hitoshi turned to her with a puzzled frown. "Huh? What'd I say?"

"What makes you think you'll get a useless class?" she asked, folding her arms. "You haven't even been tested yet."

"Yeah, but... I've never been good at anything," he said with a shrug, trying to sound casual but the instant he recalled Eri's cold indifferent face at the school gate and the countless traumatic memories of his past life, his voice shrunk considerably.

" I've been thinking about it and the Head Maid was right...., what I did this morning proves it. I mean, what kind of servant disgraces their master Infront of lots of people like that?" Hitoshi glanced down at his feet briefly, several emotions fleeting past his face.

" The only time I should do something like that is after buying back my freedom." Hitoshi unconsciously clenched his little fist's.

"Like the head maid said..., I'm nothing more than a servant." Aiko remained silent as Hitoshi bit his lower lip while recalling the brief memory again before continuing.

Hitoshi raised his head to stare at the halls luminescent ceiling as if deep in thought." Till then I should be trying my best to fit that role. I can't keep relying on you or your family or anyone else..." A light breath left his nostrils when the frustrated look of his father flashed past his mind.

" Still...even if I want to be useful, I can't change the fact that I'm still a burden." Hitoshi smiled awkwardly.

" I guess what I mean is... Even if we don't end up in the same class or you don't want me around, I'll still do my best. That's what servants are supposed to do, right? Untill I can buy back my freedom."

' Why's he acting nice now?...' Aiko stared at him for a moment. She wanted to scoff or rather, call him a dummy like always.

But something about the way he said it, like he already believed it so deeply, made her pause.

She clicked her tongue and looked away. "Idiot," she muttered under her breath. "Don't think I'll pity you if you end up with some useless class. No matter what, I'll still make use of you. There's no way I'd let my mother's money go to waste."

Hitoshi blinked... then huffed and slumped deeper into his seat, mumbling, "Understood..."

' I thought she'd be a bit more nice about it.' Hitoshi let out a breath.

'Who cares. I just have to be useful... Then I'll finally be free. Hitoshi glanced at the stage again, a blank look on his face. ' After that..., I'm done helping anyone.' Hitoshi creased his brows, biting his lower lip in frustration, his eyes moistening.
