My Advisers accepted the idea of not killing humans with as much enthusiasm as I expected, but even they had to admit that it would be much less risky with a telepath.

What we all agreed on is that B568-114 had to make the dragons fly again as fast as possible. Without at least one of them, it will take weeks to reach the human village.

So I had to bring B568-114 to Scourge again. This time, we were accompanied by Invincible-13.

"Scourge is lazy. They are all lazy, sister," Invincible-13 said with the experience of an old dragon rider. "I even tried scratches, but they refused to go anywhere—and scratching these beasts is hard!"

"Oh, scratches? Like with dogs?" I asked curiously. "Why is it hard?"

"The hands get tired quickly when you hold the scratching stick." Invincible-13 pointed at her back with a thumb. "They like being scratched between the wings, or around the head, but they won't even feel it if you do it with bare hands."

Considering the relative size of dragons, it made perfect sense.

"They really are like dogs, though… B568-114, if you can find a shred of loyalty in Scourge's thoughts, tell it to help us. Tell it that helping us will make it a good beastie! And not helping it will make it a bad beastie."

B568-114 frowned.

"How can there be a good beast, Father? There are only useful ones, dangerous ones, and everything else."

Unhappiness flashed on Invincible-13's face.

"Yes… A lazy dragon is a useless dragon… But they have a lot of valuable scales. Scourge is very useful, though—when it's not being lazy."

I studied Invincible-13's expression. She was the Scourge's main rider, and it—her main dragon. I never saw her treating Scourge with a lot of affection, but it looked like some bond appeared between them despite all the xenophobia.

I chose my words carefully, knowing that my girls will absorb them like sponges and carry them to the entire Bee Empire.

"Dragons are incredibly useful, indeed. And they even have thoughts we can understand, as B568-114 proved today. They aren't as hard-working as bees, but for their overall usefulness, they surely deserved some forgiveness. Besides, and I know it's a shock, but we can be friends with people other than family. But right now, we need dragons to work—for the Empire's sake."

"They have thoughts I understand, but they don't think like bees at all," B568-114 said stubbornly, then lowered her head. "But I will try to understand your words, Father. You are smarter than me."

I chuckled.

"Yes, I am. Now…" I pointed toward Scourge, who was still feasting on carrion. "Let's get closer and communicate. I and Invincible-13 will advise you what to say."

"Alright, Father! For the Empire—I understand *that* much, at least!"

Like before, Scourge spared us a glance and then stayed mostly indifferent—I believed it was a sign of its trust. Again, B568-114 focused on its head.

An instant later, Scourge dropped the piece of meat from its jaws in shock and spun its head around wildly. Its wings rose threateningly, and a growl began in its throat—then went quiet. The dragon turned to B568-114 and us.

Invincible-13 growled something vaguely calming right back and waved her hand. Scourge stepped back, lowering its wings, but tilting its head warily.

"It was shocked to hear my thoughts, but I explained to it who was talking," B568-114 announced. "It called us 'stinging bugs', Father! Should I explain to it that we are bees?"

I waved my hand.

"Scourge can call us whatever it likes—it's only in its head, anyway. Just continue. Ask it nicely!"

"Nicely. I can ask nicely, yes." B568-114 nodded extremely seriously, then clasped her hands like for a prayer. "I will pretend that I'm talking to you, Father!"

She closed her eyes, and I immediately saw Scourge jolt in place. It hopped back from B568-114 and even flapped its wings, alerting Foragers working nearby and other dragons feeding on carrion nearby.

"He's too far… I can't hear his reply!" B568-114 said, and without waiting for a reaction, flew after Scourge. The rest of us followed.

Scourge jolted back again, but stopped a dozen meters back, baring its teeth at B568-114. At my side, Destroyer and bodyguards tensed, but B568-114 seemed to be so focused on Scourge's thoughts that she paid no attention to its expression.

'The way this goes, B568-114 will scare Scourge away entirely,' I thought with worry.

"It's alright, Scourge will get used to hearing my thoughts—or it won't be a very useful beast anymore," B568-114 said, scowling. "But does it want to be useful? Do you, Scourge?"

Scourge let out a loud growl and bowed its head. B568-114 raised her chin.

"That's right! We were feeding you all this time. We let you eat the bodies of our enemies. Now be a good beastie and you will get scratches!"

It sounded like a treat. But whatever B568-114 transmitted in Scourge's head, it seemed to work.

Scourge lowered its wings and let out a soft growl, which made Invincible-13 perk up.

"This means he's ready to carry people. I can finally fly after our Beehounds in the village. Should I go right now, Father?"

"No, wait." I turned to B568-114 and patted her head. "Great work, whatever you did—but it's far from over. We still have a war to finish… Together. I, you, Bloodimina, and an entire army of bees. Are you ready?"

B568-114 looked at me with shining eyes.

"I am, Father," she said breathlessly. "I was made for this. To make useful beasts out of useless ones. Direct me to whoever I need to tame!"

"I will. Destroyer, send messengers—I'm flying to the human village at once, so I could lead Bloodimina's army personally. B568-114, come with me. We will say our goodbyes to Ambrosia, and I hope that you will be able to send her telepathic messages."

Things were set in motion.

Less than an hour later, I was clinging to the back of a dragon again.

It was time to put an end to fighting—the radical way, if necessary.
