When the phone stopped ringing and no one picked up, Carolline didn’t know whether to feel relieved or not. She tried calling again, but still got no answer. She finally put her phone aside, and it took her a long time to fall asleep with a restless heart.
What Carolline didn’t know was that Bryan Hawkins was actually watching the screen of his phone, going from bright to dark and back to bright again. He thought Carolline would call a third time and decided that he would answer if she did.
However, the phone only rang twice, then stopped.
He finished the red wine in his glass, stood up, and walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. He had just come out of the bathroom, wearing only a bathrobe and watching the bustling traffic down below.
At this moment, there was a knock at the door. He turned around to answer it.
Standing outside was a very beautiful woman, dressed in revealing clothes and with an obvious intention. Recently, some of his potential business partners had sent him women to try to strike business deals. He had refused them all.
But Bryan never thought someone would continue to send women to him.
He admitted that the woman in front of him was the most beautiful and enchanting of all the women that had been sent to him. She even looked innocent, but right now, he could only think about Carolline’s silly and adorable face.
“What’s your boss’s name?” Bryan asked directly.
“Hannah Watson.” The woman didn’t know what Bryan meant by his question, and assumed he was going to accept her. She naturally told him her boss’s name.
“Hmm, go back and tell her that Hawkins Family will never have any cooperation with her.” After saying that, Bryan was about to close the door, but the woman outside panicked. She quickly reached out with both hands, blocking the door. “Mr. Hawkins, I… I’m still a virgin.”
“Hmm, cherish yourself.” Bryan’s deep voice sounded again, and he tried to close the door once more. The woman still wouldn’t let go. She needed money, and Hannah had promised her that if she could secure the deal with Bryan, she would give her five hundred thousand. “If you don’t let go, I’m calling security.”
The woman finally withdrew her hand. Bryan closed the door and made several more calls.
The woman outside was picked up by somebody sent by Hannah. She simply couldn’t believe that the female college student she had found was so naive.
Bryan changed his clothes. He had to go out and socialize later, and after he came back tonight, there was a video conference he needed to attend. He was really too busy to get away.
Carolline received the call from Bryan just before she went to work.
“Were you looking for me last night?” Bryan’s deep voice sounded in Carolline’s ear.
Carolline’s heart trembled as she listened. Fortunately, she was in the restroom alone at that moment, or the blush on her earlobes would surely betray her.
Although Bryan’s voice was coming through the phone’s receiver, Carolline had the illusion that his lips were right next to her ear, teasing her heart and making her ears suffer.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?” Bryan waited for a while but didn’t get a response from Carolline, so he spoke again.
“Well, I…I wanted to tell you that Xavier Estrada took me to the villa yesterday, and I’m very satisfied with the decoration, so there’s no need to redesign it.” It took Carolline a long time to get her words straight.
“Hmm, Xavier told me. Do you have anything else to say to me?” Bryan restrained himself, asking softly, with a hint of coaxing in his tone.
“I… I have to go to work. I’m almost late.” In an instant, her heart leaped to her throat, but she still didn’t know how to tell him about the assault and her rescue by Simon Carrington.
“…Then hang up.” After saying that, Bryan hung up the call.
Carolline heard the beeping tone from the other side and slapped her forehead, cursing herself for being so useless in front of Bryan.
When Carolline came out, Emily Hill was standing at the door, giving her a strange look. “Who were you hiding in there talking to?”
“A friend. Mom, I’m going to work now. I’ll just eat at the cafeteria at noon.” Carolline grabbed her bag, changed her shoes, and hurried out.
She wasn’t lying—she really was almost late.
When the nursing staff in the Surgical Department got busy, they were like spinning tops. From eight o’clock in the morning until ten-thirty, in the two-and-a-half hours, Carolline didn’t even sit down once, nor did she have time to drink a sip of water or go to the restroom.
After ten-thirty, Carolline and the others finally had a chance to sit down and catch their breath. But just at that moment, another patient was brought in. It was an old man who had fallen at home. The head nurse went to receive him personally.
It turned out that the old man was Bryan’s grandfather, who had just fallen. Carolline’s face turned pale with shock when she saw him. “How did you fall, Grandpa Hawkins?”
“I came back from my morning run, took a shower, and didn’t notice. I stepped on the towel and fell. I had an X-ray taken downstairs just now, and there’s a slight fracture in my leg.” Mrs. Hawkins explained, “Carolline, your Grandpa Hawkins will probably have to stay in the hospital for a week to observe. When you come to work, will you come over to help him?”
Mrs. Hawkins took Carolline’s hand and asked. This girl had promised to come visit, but she had never shown up. She really missed her.
