Chapter 173: Chapter 173

- KILLIAN -

Seeing her leave because of me broke me. Seeing her walk away with the desperation to run after her being pungent but not able to destroyed me even more.

It doesn’t make any sense. Just this morning and a few days ago, we made love. We were happy then all of a sudden she drops this on me. Certainly it can’t be before I forgot to inform her about Kate.

I’ll terminate the contract binding me to Kate if I have to to make Hazel be mine completely, no matter the cost or effect it’ll have on me. Hazel is worth more.

I let out a sigh, turning my head away from her direction. Could it be Asami again?

No, I told her to stay away!

But it could be, I know how dumb Asami could be, I contemplate in my head. I wish Hazel would just tell me. I honestly wish she wasn’t being so secretive about it. Another exhale leaves my mouth. My mind drifts back to earlier today when she spat those words at me.

Being mean does not suit her. It should be blasphemous. My eyes drop to the ground. It’ll be hard to forget what she said though, even though I know she probably didn’t mean it. Hazel told me to hang on to her no matter what. I don’t know what she’s got up her sleeve but this is the time for me to be supportive, even though it rejects me.

Whatever it is, I honestly hope she’ll achieve it. My men are keeping an eye on her. I’ll have them report her daily routine to me today just so I understand more into what’s going on. Right now, I just have to wait.

“And that’s where we need you investors to come in.” These words bring my attention back to the ambassador representing the school. “Providing a brighter future for our students and children. With more exposure to technology, these students have a chance to have an improved and enhanced learning. One which the school can’t provide alone.”

To be honest, I’m not paying attention to half of what he’s saying, but from the little I’ve heard, the vision is nice. It’s a far fetched fantasy at best because tell me why a private university with students paying more fees than usual, along with the overly sophisticated wealthy parents of the students, which are most, supporting the school financially cannot afford this said budget for their own benefit? I think the school just wants to avoid bearing a massive cost to them, hence why we’re here. If this is a project the school believes in, with the chances of it crumbling when set in motion close to ten percentage, then it would’ve been something they could’ve easily begun alone.

If this deal doesn’t go through and these investors don’t want to lend their hand to the school, the ambassador is giving the intonation that the school won’t proceed as they’ll be in debt if the ‘brilliant idea’ backfires. So they want us to bear the loss and at what benefit? The perception they’re trying to sell of naming the facilities that will be provided through our financial investment after us. Many rich folks will fumble hard on that idea, after all, their children attend this said school and it will be a brag to future generations to come but I’m childless. All my possible children come down the throat of a certain lady who dumped me and sometimes, on her belly, so this idea does not sell well to me at all. Who better to have a clearer interpretation of a subject than a young bachelor himself who has worked for every penny he’s earned? Exactly.

“What do you say, gentlemen?” The ambassador’s attention is directed at us.

“It’s a nice dream at best, but do go on with selling your story, I’m sure much persistence will make us buy the idea.” A hide a chuckle as Kaiden blurts out. Exactly my thought. Kaiden Crest and I were never on good terms but this was one good thing he said. He made a fool out of the ambassador, politely of course. He voiced out my mind. The other investors don’t hide their laughter, shamelessly indulging in it.

“A charming humour.” The ambassador chimes, slightly abashed. “Please, come with me, maybe certain sections of the school will persuade you.”

I scoff, try your luck, big guy. I’d be sure to give you a penny for your effort. The ambassador walks ahead and we tail behind him. My hands are closeted in my pocket as I count my steps. I’m calm and quiet. Everything going on with me is the opposite of my outward appearance but one’s suffering doesn’t need to have a written interpretation on the face. If there’s one thing I know, it’s that the world does not give a shit about how you fend for yourself. Only a few people can bother or consider to care but amongst that few, rarely one is honest about it. Everyone has their own struggle and they expect you to deal with yours as they battle with theirs. It’s a selfish conception but it is what it is.

“What do you think about this? I call bull.” Kaiden asks, walking by my side. Boy, seeing him again this close makes me know how much I did not miss this blonde guy but I’m casual about it. It’s just so funny how the timing is. I took his woman from him and she dumped me the moment I met him again. How time flies. I can I can only be a decent human being right about now even though I don’t particularly hold any negative feelings towards him.

“It’s quite foul. They want a loss on our pocket. The effort is admirable at best.” I respond, walking forward by his side. If I wasn’t keen on scenting respectably, I’d have tagged this man as a woman for having too much perfume on. And is that female perfume I scent? I’m scorned.

Him being here rubs it in my face that I’m single. I never imagined this day. Being mature and understanding can be a bore especially in this scenario. Hazel’s the one person I don’t want to have to force the words out from yet she chooses not to tell me anything. It’s infuriating.

“It might work out well. After all, what’s business without risks?” Kaiden opines. I stop walking.

“The only risk we’d take is having no contingency plan. We’re not expected to make a profit whether or not it is a success. We’re simply lending a hand and as businessmen, having no profit is a waste of time.” Not to mention, money.

“It brings publicity to our businesses.”

“Only if the project succeeds. If it fails, it’ll be bad publicity and the headlines will be directed to work against us. That being said, our pockets will suffer trying to please the media. It’s not a good investment no matter how much I think about it.” For one, not every company owner loves publicity. For their business, yes, but for them making public appearances, not so much. Some people would rather stay hidden and enjoy their wealth without prying eyes. I for one don’t want to be present to the public till I rid myself of every connection I have with the mafia. My own partnered empire built with the blood and sweat of my ancestors.

“You calculate losses quite well.”

“If I don’t, I won’t be a suitable businessman.” I let the end of my lips curl to a half smile. My eyes are on Kaiden’s and his are on me. Call me petty but it’s nice to know our height difference is obvious. He’s tall and a fine man, I agree, but I am way more outstanding.

“Well said.” Kaiden finally speaks, breaking the short silence. I stare ahead.

“Our companions are well ahead of us, let’s catch up to them.” I say to him. This is the first time I can recall that my conversation with him hasn’t been strenuous. I remember wanting to kill this man all because of jealousy. It’s funny how our desires for someone pushes us to want to commit terrible crimes.

“I could not agree more.” Kaiden says and we walk ahead together.

Now that our brief interaction is over, I can’t help but think about Hazel.

‘You disgust me, Killian.’ Echoes in my ears. ‘I’ve put it off long enough but I can’t anymore. Let’s break up and end this thing between us.’ My head feels heavy as her words replay in my mind. I take my hands out of my pocket to massage my temples.

My jaw tightens. Yes, those words certainly hurt, way more than it should even if there’s a hidden intention behind it.

‘I’ve simply gotten bored.’ I lunge my head up to the ceiling and let the tip of my fingers rest on both my eyes, keeping them shut. Shit.
