Shattered Time-Chapter 34 – “The Room for Two”
Chapter 34 - 34 – “The Room for Two”
Kael didn't believe in mercy anymore.
Not after what he'd seen.
Not after what he remembered.
But then the door—
the one that never existed—
opened.
And someone fell through.
Not walked.
Fell.
A girl.
She hit the wooden floor hard, gasping like she'd been drowning. Her clothes were soaked in a thick black liquid that evaporated on contact with the air, leaving no trace behind but the smell of burned pages.
Kael didn't move at first. He didn't trust his own eyes anymore.
He'd seen her die before.
He'd seen her vanish, melt, scream, beg, turn into him.
But this wasn't her.
Not the girl. Not his girl.
This was someone else.
She looked up with wide, frantic eyes.
"W-where am I? What is this place?!"
Kael stared. His voice came out hoarse, unused. "You're in a loop. A trap. A book with no ending. And if you're here..." He paused, swallowing. "Then it's already too late for you."
She stumbled back. "No, no, I was—I was just in my room. There was a noise, a flicker—and then that thing—"
"Pulse," Kael whispered.
The word silenced the air like a curse.
She turned to him, breathing heavily. "Is this... your dream?"
Kael let out a laugh. Dry. Bitter. "If this was mine, I would've woken up already."
They sat across from each other now, on either side of the table. The tea refilled itself. The photo frame updated.
Now it showed the two of them.
Smiling.
But their shadows in the image were wrong.
The girl looked at it and paled. "That's not me."
"No," Kael agreed. "Not yet."
Suddenly, a low hum began to rise. Under the floor. In the walls.
The candles blinked.
The knock returned.
Three.
Then six.
Then nine.
And then a voice—no longer a whisper, but something closer to a growl:
"Two is company. Three is chaos."
The walls shivered.
A new photo dropped onto the floor with a sound like a heartbeat.
It showed the two of them looking into the camera, eyes pitch black.
Behind them—a silhouette of a third.
Something tall. Bent. Smiling.
Kael picked it up.
"Looks like we have a roommate."
