Chen Bo nodded, not daring to glance at Shen Heyu, acting as if he already knew something, left the hospital room first. Before leaving, he ‘thoughtfully’ closed and locked the door, clearing out everyone in the corridor outside as well.
Shen Heyu let out a cold laugh, truly ‘thoughtful’ indeed.
Pei Yansi watched her quietly and, seeing her reaction, said, “What are you laughing at?”
Shen Heyu didn’t speak. She lifted her eyes to look at him, even more composed than before, with no other emotion in her eyes, just gazing at Pei Yansi faintly.
Of course, Pei Yansi wouldn’t feel intimidated by her gaze.
He met her gaze directly.
Shen Heyu watched him for a long time; his face was very handsome, or rather, beautiful was an understatement, to the point where many women who saw him would flock to him.
But as a person… why was he so detestable?
“Do you detest me?” Pei Yansi spoke up, noticing that the indifference in her eyes gradually turned into disdain.
Shen Heyu clenched her hands into fists and said coldly, “Why don’t you go die?”
Pei Yansi paused, “What did you say?” As if he hadn’t expected her to curse him as soon as she spoke, he reacted and his gaze turned cold and dangerous, looking at her deeply.
He said, “Don’t forget that I indeed nearly died for you.”
His meaning was clear, he was still lying in a hospital now.
“Don’t touch my daughter, or I will fight you to the death,” Shen Heyu spoke icily, staring at him, “Give me Yuexue.”
“The more you talk, the less I understand,” Pei Yansi smiled, but his eyes were frosty as he looked at her. Yet, he reached out, as if to gently pull her closer, “To say, Yuexue is my daughter too.”
“Would I harm her?”
“What do you really want?”
Shen Heyu grew increasingly weak, her body collapsing backward, slumping onto the sofa behind her, struggling to say, “Let me see Yuexue.”
“And after you see her?” Pei Yansi rose from the hospital bed.
He walked to her side.
Shen Heyu instinctively wanted to dodge backward, but her body lacked any strength, and she could only watch as the devil approached.
He sat down beside her, the distance between them very close, and pulled her into his embrace. Lowering his head, he tenderly kissed the corner of her lips, saying, “After seeing her, do you plan to take her and disappear, vanish forever, is that it?”
Shen Heyu trembled in his arms, as if frightened or as if her inner thoughts had been laid bare.
Pei Yansi felt her change and held her even tighter.
“You should know, until we remarry, you won’t be able to see Yuexue.”
His kisses were exceedingly gentle, as if cherishing some rare treasure, yet the words that came out of his mouth were devoid of warmth, “Do you really think I would give you that opportunity?”
An opportunity to leave him forever.
He had had enough of these six years of living, not a single day had he not been a walking corpse, he only wanted her, wanted her to stay by his side forever.
But he was neither good at nor inclined to express it, and in Shen Heyu’s eyes, it just seemed like the torment was not enough.
She forced herself to calm down and looked at him, saying, “So, to what extent do you plan to torment me before you let me go?”
“Torment?” Pei Yansi paused, not expecting her to describe life by his side with that word.
He furrowed his brows, “Why do you feel like I’m tormenting you?”
“Isn’t it?” Shen Heyu replied coldly, “I’m reluctant, and your unscrupulous methods—if not torment, what is it? Our marriage six years ago was all about Shen Fanshuang, wasn’t it?”
“I thought, after all these years, you’d have moved on from Shen Fanshuang and, with that, have set aside the torment and hatred you held for me. It seems I was wrong; given the chance, you’d still catch me and continuously torment me…”
The more Shen Heyu talked, the colder her heart felt.
She remembered following Pei Yansi only because of another woman who had died. Everyone believed that woman’s death was related to her.
Pei Yansi watched her quietly, noticing her eyes getting red as if she was about to cry.
A pain clenched his heart as he said, “It’s not torment.” He genuinely wanted a simple remarriage. Why did she always have to think so poorly of him?
“It doesn’t matter anymore. Whatever I say, you’ll never believe it.”
She had wanted to tell him that Shen Fanshuang’s death had nothing to do with her and implored him not to torment her anymore.
But thinking it over, how many times had he ever believed what she said over the years?
“So have you made up your mind?” Pei Yansi looked down and licked her lips.
Feeling the touch on her lips, her instinct was to push him away, but reason held her back as she stared at him firmly, “I can agree to stay by your side, but I won’t remarry.”
“Not remarry?” Pei Yansi contemplated her meaning, just staying by his side but not remarrying, which meant dating.
He filled in the gaps himself and said, “Then live with me and Yuexue?”
“Up to you. As long as it’s not remarriage, I can agree to anything.”
“The condition is, let me see Yuexue first.”
Pei Yansi nodded. This plan didn’t seem too bad. Having her and her daughter with him, living together—women are said to be emotional creatures. With time and her daughter there, she would surely soften and have a change of heart.
When the time came to propose remarriage again, it would likely be much simpler than now.
Most importantly, he didn’t want to be too harsh and cause her to hate him too much.
“Of course, it’s alright, my dear,” Pei Yansi embraced her, starting with a gentle kiss that soon became a more forceful, deep one.
Shen Heyu, unable to resist, grabbed his collar tightly and accidentally tugged at his bandage. He hissed in pain and let her go.
“You’re quite cruel,” Pei Yansi said.
“I want to see Yuexue.”
Shen Heyu stared at him determinedly.
His gaze dropped, taking in her moist lips, made so by his actions.
He said, “Help me get to the hospital bed first.”
Clearly vital and full of energy just a moment before, able to leap out of bed on his own, he now needed her help—his ulterior motive was transparent.
She frowned but obediently reached out to help him, and he conveniently wrapped his arm around her waist. He wanted to hold her, but his body wouldn’t support it; the injury on his back was excruciating. Heaven knew how much endurance he needed to pretend nothing was wrong and hop around just to catch her.
Once he was finally settled in bed, he signaled for Chen Bo outside to come in.
“Take Miss Shen to see Yuexue.”
Chen Bo glanced at Shen Heyu, understood the situation, then turned to leave, with Shen Heyu hurrying after him.
She discovered, however, that the place he was taking her was neither a distant location nor a secluded neighborhood; it was just the room next to Pei Yansi’s…
