Shrouded Seascape-Chapter 1092: Deck
Chapter 1092: Deck
Anna was taken aback to discover that the newcomers had white skin instead of caramel-toned skin like her employer.
The leader of the group was a man with a big brown beard; his burly arms were covered in many tattoos, and the symbol "1%" was on the chest of his leather jacket.
The brown-bearded man's laughter arrived before him. He guffawed as he approached, and as if he were picking up a ball, he scooped up Anna's employer.
The two enthusiastically patted each other on the shoulders.
On the surface, they seemed as close as family, but in reality, they were guarding against one another.
Anna was feeling curious about the kind of deal these two groups were about to make that they had to commission hunters instead of just ordinary bodyguards.
"Olivia, check our employer's memories and see what they're up to."
The freckled young woman immediately obeyed, but she soon shook her head with a troubled face. "I can see his memories, but I don't understand what he's saying. I only know that he's made a lot of phone calls and met with many people recently. His emotions are dominated by nervousness and excitement."
Since Olivia couldn't figure out what the other party was trying to do, Anna turned around and walked away from the deck in disappointment. "I'm going back first. Jackal, keep an eye on things."
Jackal's sharp gaze studied the followers that the brown-bearded man had brought along with him. "Those people are giving me a sense of foreboding. I'm afraid our employer might die if you leave."
Anna glanced at the chubby tanned man in the distance, who had his arm around the brown-bearded man's shoulder, and indifferently said, "If he dies, he dies. We've stolen so much money from our previous missions. Do we still need that reward from him?"
This commission was just an excuse. Their main objective was to find out whether the IMF had left any personnel to monitor this region.
When Anna turned around, her unusual behavior immediately attracted the attention of the group of white men.
One of them frowned as he looked at Anna's back. He then pressed his right index finger on his temple, and—
—the man howled in agony, and his face contorted as he collapsed to the ground.
The agonized scream was like a signal for the battle to commence.
The two groups were extremely friendly toward each other just moments ago, but they instantly became hostile upon hearing the scream. They pointed their guns at each other, and thick, killing intent flashed in their eyes.
The atmosphere was so oppressive that it was terrifying.
Everyone's nerves were stretched taut as if they were arrows nocked on bows.
"उत्साहित मत बनो!"[1] said the brown-bearded man. Upon assuaging the tense nerves of his subordinates, he cast a sincere gaze at Anna's employer, saying, "मैन, मैं वास्तव में आपके साथ काम करता हूं, यह सिर्फ इसकी गलतफहमी है"[2]
As soon as the brown-bearded man's words fell, the nervous, chubby tanned man calmed down. He waved his hand lightly, and the guns in the hands of his bodyguards were lowered.
The cannons on the nearby destroyers turned away as well.
When everyone had calmed down, the brown-bearded man and his subordinates turned to the man who had fallen to the ground.
They whispered among themselves for quite a while until their gazes finally landed on Anna.
Anna was standing quietly with her arms crossed. She no longer had any intention to leave. She just stood there, waiting to see what they were going to do.
The brown-bearded man said a few words to Anna's employer before walking up to Anna with his subordinates in tow. He grinned, and he sounded apologetic as he said in English, "I'm very sorry about that. It was my subordinate's mistake. He shouldn't have randomly peeked at your memories.
"However, I'm sure he didn't expect that someone is actually capable of setting traps in their own memories."
Anna stayed silent, observing the dozens of people behind the brown-bearded man. Their outfits weren't uniform. In fact, it looked like they were a ragtag bunch of people.
The man earlier was apparently capable of reading memories like Olivia, so Anna assumed that the people before her had their own special ability.
"Hahaha, it seems that I underestimated Portman's intellect. To think that he had invited someone capable of protecting his memories," the brown-bearded man remarked.
The brown-bearded man glanced at Anna's employer. Obviously, he thought that Portman had specifically recruited Anna in exchange for a large sum.

Anna shook her head. "No, he doesn't know anything. We were just recruited randomly."
"Then, the fact that he managed to find someone as capable as you means that he has great luck. Anyway, do you mind telling me about your identities?" the brown-bearded man asked, probing Anna.
Instead of answering, Anna asked back, "How about you? Where do you come from? Why have you decided to look for this fat guy? And don't you think you're making things difficult for me by asking that?
"It's better if we keep each other's identity a secret. You do your deal; I do my job. It'll be great if we don't interfere with each other," Anna said. She thought that the brown-bearded man would tactfully back down upon hearing her reply.
However, Anna was surprised when the brown-bearded man directly revealed his identity.
"We're mercenaries from the Wilson Group. My name is Hanks, and I'm sure you haven't heard of us, but that's normal—our group was just formed. You can think of us as hunters with a bit more military training than the average hunter.
"We've come here to secretly take control of Sri Lanka together with Mr. Portman. With the special abilities of my subordinates, taking control of a small nation is as easy as taking candy from a baby."
Anna was astonished as he sized up the chubby tanned man in the distance and the brown-bearded man in front of her.
Just how much liquor had these guys drunk? They were actually daring enough to try and take control of a nation with their puny abilities? On second thought, however, it wasn't really that strange.
If one wanted to make full use of one's special ability, the best way to go about it would be to take over a country.
"Are you not afraid of the IMF dealing with you guys? What if their shadows are among your people?" Anna asked a question that highlighted something extremely important to the point of being fatal if not addressed.
"Hahaha, they'll soon have no time to deal with us," the brown-bearded man replied with a smug smile before adding," Anyway, I've told you who we are, so can you tell me who you are now? Who are you?"
No time? Anna pondered over the brown-bearded man's words that unexpectedly contained a ton of information.
"We're not worthy of your attention at all," Anna remarked. "We're just a small group of hunters trying to earn a living. That fat guy said that he'll pay us a ton, so we came here."
The brown-bearded man sized up the neither humble nor arrogant young woman in front of him. His intuition told him that Anna wasn't just an ordinary hunter, so it wouldn't be a bad thing to make friends with them before anything else.
"Hahaha." The brown-bearded man laughed. "I understand your concerns, but it's extremely dangerous to be a lone wolf right now. I'm sure you've heard about the recent string of deaths in Subterranean London. You've heard of it, haven't you?
"Think about joining us; join us, and we'll all be friends. No one will dare to touch you by then," the brown-beaded man said, handing over a silver business card to Anna.
Anna accepted the business card.
The brown-bearded man saw that and was about to say something when a shrill whistling noise echoed from the distance.
Boom!
A thunderous boom echoed as an artillery shell struck the deck, and flames shot up high into the sky.
Anna's figure was trembling at a high frequency as she crawled up from the scorched steel deck. She turned and found the brown-bearded man staring at her with wide eyes on the ground. No, to be more exact, what remained of the brown-bearded man—a head and half a rib cage—was staring at Anna.
The explosion had blown away the rest of his body.

2. Man, we're on the same side; this is just a misunderstanding. ☜
