Chapter 209 -209: Recognition at Last
The two sat down in front of the hospital bed, quietly watching Lu Jianguo on the bed receiving an IV.
Gu Pan had felt Lu Jianguo looked familiar the first time she saw him but couldn’t figure out why until now. It was because his profile bore some resemblance to Lu Ruisheng’s.
The father and son didn’t have obviously similar features, but from certain angles and in their expressions, they looked alike.
Lu Ruisheng looked at Lu Jianguo, his mind a mess, wanting to know too much, but as his wife had said, at least he had not been abandoned as a child, and his father remembered him. This lessened his fear—he truly feared he had been abandoned. Although he was grown up, those repressed ideas from childhood were knots that couldn’t be untied. At least for now, one knot was unraveled.
No matter the reason, as long as there was one, as long as it wasn’t abandonment, he felt he could more easily accept it.
This was also the deepest fear of all children who grew up in orphanages: Why were we abandoned? Why don’t our parents love us? Don’t want us? Is there something wrong with us?
Lu Jianguo on the bed wasn’t frowning anymore. He struggled to open his eyes and when he saw Lu Ruisheng, he smiled: “It’s not a dream, you’re still here.”
Seeing Lu Jianguo awake, Gu Pan hastily went out to call the doctor, “Doctor, doctor, the patient is awake!”
The doctor was next door and hurried over, “Let me check on him.”
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng stepped aside to give the doctor room to examine the patient.
After examining him, the doctor looked at Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng and said with relief, “There’s no major problem, but the Base Commander’s heart wasn’t in great condition to begin with. He always overworked without rest, and this time it was due to too much overtime and lack of sleep, so it’s best he stays in the hospital for a couple of days to recuperate.”
Gu Pan asked, “Then for the hospital stay, I haven’t registered yet. Should I go do that first?” It was her first time at the base’s hospital, so she truly didn’t know the procedure.
The doctor smiled, “No need, no need. The Base Commander has a patient file here in the hospital, and as a base leader, he is covered by full medical insurance. You don’t need to worry about these things. I will take you to the ward first and then have the paperwork brought to you completed.”
Gu Pan quickly thanked the doctor and noticed that the Base Commander indeed had many privileges.
The doctor asked Lu Ruisheng to help move Lu Jianguo to an isolated ward on the first floor.
After all, Lu Jianguo was the Base Commander, and such a status wasn’t fitting for staying in a ward with many people; this was understood by everyone.
The doctor gave them a few more instructions and left.
When the doctor had gone, Lu Jianguo said to Lu Ruisheng, “Just seeing you and already I’ve dragged you to the hospital, really, as a father…”
He wanted to say he hadn’t fulfilled his duties as a father and had made his child look after him from the moment they met, but he couldn’t finish his sentence, not knowing if Lu Ruisheng was willing to acknowledge him as his father, so he trailed off.
Lu Ruisheng probably knew what he meant, but there were things he didn’t know how to respond to at the moment, so he said, “You’re weak, don’t talk now. Rest.”

Lu Jianguo reached out to grab Lu Ruisheng’s hand but the IV tube got tangled near the pillow.
Lu Ruisheng stood up and helped sort out the tubing, “We can talk about everything once you’re feeling better.”
He did have too many questions, but seeing the weakened man in front of him, he couldn’t bear to stress him further.
Lu Jianguo knew he couldn’t rush, so he just nodded, “Shengsheng, I’m sorry.”
Lu Ruisheng didn’t know how to respond and remained silent.
The room fell into an awkward silence for a moment; everyone stopped talking, so quiet that you could hear a pin drop.
After pondering for a while, Gu Pan finally broke the awkwardness by addressing Lu Jianguo, “Base Commander, it’s almost noon. Would you like some porridge or chicken soup? Or is there anything else you’d like to eat?”
Lu Jianguo hurriedly waved his hands, “No, no need to trouble yourself.”
“It’s no trouble at all; I just happened to make some chicken soup this morning. I’ll go back and get some,” Gu Pan said with a smile.
No one knew what they had brought back with them yesterday, so whatever they ate wouldn’t raise any suspicions. Gu Pan had everything in her Space; she could just say it was made in the morning, go home, and bring it back. There was no need to actually go and prepare it.
“I’m not fussy; I’ll eat whatever you guys are having,” Lu Jianguo said with a smile, pleasantly surprised that he could eat a meal made by his daughter-in-law. Plus, with his son by his side, even if he were to pass away today, it seemed less regrettable.
Turning to Lu Ruisheng, Gu Pan instructed, “Then stay here and keep the Base Commander company for a bit. I’ll be back quickly; everything is ready at home.”
Lu Ruisheng understood what his wife meant by “ready”: “Then be careful when you ride your bike on the way there, and come back quickly.”
Gu Pan needed to give some private space to father and son; even if they didn’t talk about certain matters, they needed to get acquainted as soon as possible. With her present, they might feel somewhat restrained, but without others around, even if there was awkwardness, it was just between the two of them. And through this shared awkwardness, they might eventually ease up.
Moreover, Cheng Yang and the others were supposed to go house-hunting that morning. Not seeing them at home might cause worry, so it would be best for her to go back and check on them, telling them about the situation here so they wouldn’t worry. In times without cell phones, a sudden disappearance was sure to cause concern.
She told Lu Jianguo, “Base Commander, you have a good rest. I’ll go back and get your meal, and I’ll bring some things you might need during your hospital stay.”
Lu Jianguo nodded repeatedly, “Thank you for your efforts.”
“It’s no trouble; I’ll be going then,” Gu Pan said with a smile.
She squeezed Lu Ruisheng’s shoulder, “Don’t overthink it; I’ll be back soon.” She felt reassured to leave, sensing that her father-in-law was a decent man.
Lu Ruisheng responded, “I’ll walk you out.”
Gu Pan laughed, “I won’t get lost in such a short distance. Stay here; I’m leaving.” With that, she headed out quickly.
Lu Ruisheng still accompanied her to the door. He watched her figure disappear before returning to the ward.
Lu Jianguo said to Lu Ruisheng, “Your wife is really good.”
Talking about her seemed to lighten Lu Ruisheng’s expression significantly, “Yes, she’s been a great help to me. She’s a very capable woman and the best person to me.”
Lu Jianguo felt immense gratitude toward Gu Pan, for she had been kind to his son. During the times when his son was alone, she was there by his side. Together, they had endured the difficulties of the apocalypse, even managing to acquire those supplies. Such feats were not possible alone; thus, both husband and wife were extraordinary.
His emotions had settled now, realizing it wasn’t the time to discuss family matters. It was better first to chat about other things and get to know each other before delving into the Lu family’s less-than-glorious issues.
So, he asked, “After the apocalypse, how did you two survive? Both of you seem to be in good shape.”
Lu Ruisheng took a seat next to Lu Jianguo and began to recount their post-apocalyptic experiences. Naturally, he couldn’t mention Zhuang Jie’s incident or the Space; he only talked about the Self-defense Team they formed with neighbors and brought the story up to the present, where Cheng Yang and others had joined them in scavenging supplies.
Listening to Lu Ruisheng, Lu Jianguo couldn’t help but nod; his son was truly exceptional. How wonderful it would have been if he had not been lost, if he had grown up by his side.
He casually asked, “Why didn’t you initially speak directly to the base about those supplies?”
