Snowstorm: I'm Super Rich in the Apocalypse-Chapter 69 - A Greater Disaster
Chapter 69: Chapter 69 A Greater Disaster
Chapter 69 -69 A Greater Disaster
After closing the window, Feng Zhekai spoke into the walkie-talkie, “It seems the plague has really arrived.”
This had been expected by everyone, considering the heaps of trash outside soaking in water, combined with the suitable temperature of twenty degrees—wasn’t this a breeding ground for the plague?
Gu Pan said, “Let’s try not to go out from now on.”
Feng Zhekai sighed, “But plagues generally last a long time, if there are no measures for prevention and treatment, it could last for several years. We don’t have enough food to last that long, I can’t even bear to think about the future.”
Gu Pan said, “We managed through the extreme cold for so long, and suddenly it all melted. So no one can predict the future; let’s not think too much about it for now and just deal with things as they come.”
She knew the plague wouldn’t last long, no more than two months, because soon it would become extremely hot. Temperatures above fifty degrees would kill the virus, but such high heat wasn’t much better than the plague; it would dry up rivers, leave the ground barren, making food even scarcer.
Of course, she couldn’t say any of this now; they would have to take it one step at a time, and she could only guide everyone silently.
Lu Ruisheng then said, “We have gasoline. Once the water recedes and the situation stabilizes, we might be able to find a car and look for a safe place further away. With our combined wisdom, we won’t be trapped so easily.”
His words were greatly encouraging to everyone. Indeed, their group was a strong combination. If they couldn’t make it through, then others would have even less of a chance.
In the afternoon, they all went up to the rooftop to plant vegetables, all fast-growing ones, per Gu Pan’s suggestion. After all, no one knew if the weather would suddenly change again. Besides, they weren’t looking for taste; they just needed some greens.
Once the vegetables were grown, they would be dried. In case of any unforeseen events, they could take them to supplement their vitamins. Many people had suffered recently from a lack of vitamins; mild cases resulted in persistent mouth ulcers, while severe cases led to sepsis.
The crops actually grew well in this temperature; sprouts appeared after just three days, and they noticed that other households were also cultivating gardens on their rooftops.
Those who ventured out to search for food these days took precautions. Some even wore masks, though without protective suits, they wore raincoats and the like.
Outside, there was plenty of contaminated food, but there were also places further away that had been covered by snow and had now been exposed without being flooded. If these areas hadn’t been eaten by rats, the food should be safe to use. For those who could go out, finding food was as probable as getting infected.
In the evening, the temperature was quite comfortable. It was a true relief for those who had endured the extreme cold, making them feel almost reborn. Gu Pan cherished these moments because they would soon face even harsher weather conditions.
Over the next few days, Gu Pan and the others exercised in the stairwell in the morning and then tended to the vegetables, living relatively stably.
Early one morning, Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng got up to exercise. As they opened the iron door on the seventh floor, they were assaulted by the stench of burnt flesh that made them want to retch, and looking out the door, Gu Pan couldn’t help but vomit.
The corridor was strewn with dozens of dead rats. These rats were enormous, as long as an adult’s arm with thick, hairless tails.

Some were not quite dead yet, eyes open, with their red eyeballs matching their electrocuted, charred bodies, and their bald tails wriggling slightly; it was utterly disgusting.
There were also those who had been electrocuted less severely but in their neurological confusion had viciously bitten and injured other rats.
In short, it wasn’t just disgusting; it was absolutely revolting.
Lu Ruisheng, enduring his own discomfort, quickly pulled Gu Pan back inside. Thankfully, there was some distance between the rats and the door, and they hadn’t been sprayed by the rats.
Once inside, Lu Ruisheng handed Gu Pan a bottle of soda: “Drink this to settle your stomach.”
Gu Pan took a sip of water, but the image of those scorched rats kept flooding her mind, and she couldn’t suppress the nausea.
In her previous life, she had seen these creatures, but never charred like this, and never so many. It was mainly the smell; the scorched hair and the stench of burnt flesh that was particularly nauseating on an empty stomach, as if to bring up stomach acid.
Lu Ruisheng picked up the walkie-talkie, “Nobody go outside; there are rats in the hallway. Let’s discuss our plan of action through the walkie-talkie.”
Cheng Yang, who had just awakened, stretched halfway through his lazy yawn, then upon hearing Lu Ruisheng’s words, suddenly sprung to his feet, “Bro, what’s happened?”
Lu Ruisheng could tell Cheng Yang was still clueless, “A bunch of rats have made it in, but most have been electrocuted in the hallway; there’s nothing capable of attacking us. However, the scene is quite vile. Don’t go out, and definitely don’t touch these things without protective measures. We need to prevent potential viruses from spreading disease.”
Upon hearing this, Cheng Yang felt his scalp tingle, “I’m really scared of those things.”
Feng Zhekai turned to Cheng Yang, “Then stay indoors. I’m not as sensitive to these things; I’ll put on a raincoat and go clean them up later.”
Lu Ruisheng said, “I searched for some protective suits earlier. I’ll pass one to your family from the balcony. Cheng Yang, you stay inside for now and gradually adjust over the next couple of days. Dr. Feng, Teacher Chen, and I will go handle it.”
After pondering for a moment, Cheng Yang responded, “No, bro, I have to come out. This is the apocalypse; I must be able to face anything. If I end up being a drag, I couldn’t bear to stay with you all.”
Lu Ruisheng laughed, “Okay, then mentally prepare yourself.” He approved of such teammates.
Soon, the men of the household donned protective suits and ventured out to clean up the rats in the hallway. They also needed to find out why these rats hadn’t eaten the poison and how they had gotten in to bolster their defenses.
Gu Pan really couldn’t bear to look outside again. Duan Shumei and Lu Xuerong were also becoming increasingly dejected over the walkie-talkie. After a short discussion, Duan Shumei started looking into ways to create smoke to drive away the rats. In times like these, taking action was better than complaining.
Having these neighbors was indeed a stroke of luck for Gu Pan.
An hour later, Lu Ruisheng came back and reported that Feng Zhekai had already disinfected them and the hallway. The protective suits had been discarded. There was a hole by the iron gates of the hallway where the rats had come through. There wasn’t enough rat poison, and there were too many rats; many hadn’t consumed any. Additionally, the rats might have mutated somewhat since the poison hadn’t affected them as much. They owed their thanks to Chen Shaonan’s electric grid.
After hearing this, Gu Pan also let out a deep sigh, “I never expected the rats to be this formidable. We didn’t have rat poison in our previous life and had to kill them violently. I’m more accustomed to the bloodshed, but the charred smell really does make me feel queasy.”
Lu Ruisheng concurred, “Indeed, cleaning up that mess, we were all saying we don’t want to eat barbecue for a while.”
Gu Pan nodded, “Same here. I didn’t want to say anything before to avoid casting a pall over everyone, but it seems we were all affected.”
“Cheng Yang probably won’t be able to stomach meat for a few days. He almost vomited his guts out, but he’s resilient and saw it through to the end.”
“He’s not stupid. If he becomes a liability during the apocalypse, it would be easy for him to be left behind.”
“Indeed, the apocalypse truly tests people.”
“By the way, did you seal up the hole in the hallway and lay down more rat poison?”
“Yeah, it’s all blocked up. We’re not planning on going out for two months anyway, so we sealed it tightly. If there’s an emergency at the front door, we’ll escape through the windows.”
“That’s good. Better to seal it off completely. Two months will pass quickly.”
