Chapter 75 - A storm within or without

The air was heavy with the scent of blood and ash. The sky above the ravaged village crackled with thunder, a storm mirroring the chaos brewing within the hearts of the three brothers. Cain stood still in the middle of the scorched earth, his eyes flickering crimson, glowing faintly in the dimming twilight. His breathing was shallow, controlled, but the storm behind his gaze was ready to unleash.

Leo paced back and forth, his boots leaving scuffed prints in the dirt. His usually calm demeanor had given way to frustration. The brothers had been tracking the remnants of their father's forces for days, and now they were closer than ever. But something didn't sit right.

Eren sat quietly on a fallen log, his fingers twiddling with a glowing shard of an ancient rune they had found earlier. He had barely spoken since the last encounter—a memory none of them could shake. Eira's sacrifice was still raw, a wound that didn't bleed but gnawed at their souls.

Selene stood a few feet away, her arms folded across her chest, her long white coat billowing gently in the wind. Her powers were slowly returning, but she hadn't said much. Not since the last battle. Her energy had changed, intensified. The air around her buzzed when she was near, like the crackle of a lightning bolt before it struck.

"We're not ready," Eren finally said, breaking the silence.

Cain looked up, his voice firm. "We don't have time to wait. He's calling them back. We need to end this—before he does."

Leo sighed. "But look at us, Cain. We're scattered. Wounded. Eira's gone. Selene's still recovering, and whatever's happening to her—it's not normal."

Selene's eyes narrowed, and she stepped forward. "Don't speak about me like I'm broken."

Leo held up a hand, conceding. "That's not what I meant."

"Good," she said, before turning to Cain. "Because I'm coming with you. No matter what."

A flash of lightning lit the dark clouds overhead as a sudden surge of energy burst through the earth beneath them. The ground cracked, and dark shadows began to rise—silent, faceless beasts born of nightmare.

"They found us," Cain growled, summoning a burst of infernal fire into his palm.

"Let's finish this," Leo said, his eyes glowing blue as he raised his hand and pulled moisture from the storm above, forming sharp shards of ice.

Eren rose, the rune shard in his hand now pulsing. "We do this together."

The battle exploded around them.

Cain dashed forward, his body engulfed in dark fire. Each step he took left scorched prints, and his fists met shadowy creatures with brutal efficiency. Selene floated into the air, her aura glowing like a starburst, her hands trembling as arcs of pure energy cascaded from her fingers.

Leo, ever the tactician, moved like a predator. His ice blades shattered the monsters mid-air, reforming again in his hands in perfect rhythm. Eren tapped into the rune, a relic from his mother's ancient lineage, and time around him slowed briefly, giving him the upper hand to tear through the horde with precision.

Then, a deeper rumble split the air.

From the rift in the sky came a booming voice. "My sons."

They stopped.

The shadows parted, and there he stood—their father. Tall, draped in a cloak darker than void, his horns twisting like obsidian thorns, and his eyes glowing with a red so deep it felt like staring into a black hole.

Cain's body shook. Rage. Pain. Resolve. "You don't get to call us that."

But before he could strike, their mother appeared.

She floated down like an angel of fury, her silver hair whipping around her like a curtain of lightning. Her powers radiated with divine intensity, and her eyes held fury.

"You will not take them," she hissed, standing between the devil and her sons.

Their father looked pained. "I never meant to lose you. Any of you."

Selene moved beside Cain, holding his hand tightly.

"Too late," Cain whispered.

But as the storm swelled, as the final confrontation loomed near, Selene stumbled, her powers suddenly flaring wildly and then dimming.

"Selene!" Cain caught her before she hit the ground.

"I... I'm fine," she gasped, "just tired... it's too much power, too fast."

Leo knelt beside her, "You've been pushing too hard. Let us handle this."

But then came another twist—behind them, a group of cloaked figures emerged. Betrayal. Allies from earlier, now revealed as double agents.

Eren clenched his fists. "Of course it wasn't going to be easy."

The storm raged on.

And the final war drew near.
