57: Chapter 56 Don’t Mess with Me
57 -56 Don’t Mess with Me
Just like Chris, standing behind the iron door and waiting for the beep, the cell door opened, and Yang Yi followed Chris out of the door.
In prison, every move had to follow the rules, and of course, eating meals was no exception.
Two people stood outside each cell, a few had only one, and after a rough check by the guards, the prisoners started to walk out in a somewhat disorganized long queue.
Group meals, queued showers, bedtime on schedule, an hour of yard time daily, and well-behaved prisoners could even take on jobs like laundry or food distribution.
These things all seemed normal, but for new inmate Yang Yi, every opportunity to interact with others meant danger and also determined whether he could locate Zhang Yong.
Yang Yi wouldn’t shout out Zhang Yong’s name during meals.
Setting aside whether Zhang Yong went by that name here, if he dared to shout, he would definitely get beaten up.
So shouting was out of the question—he had to rely on his own eyes to search and find Zhang Yong and then look for an opportunity to strike up a conversation.
There was no other way.
Chris reminded Yang Yi not to look around randomly, but in order to find Zhang Yong, he had to glance all around.
Therefore, Yang Yi had to observe as naturally as possible, with subtler movements.
Already in the communal dining hall, the prisoners lined up in a long queue, passing by the food serving station in turn.
With most of the misdemeanor offenders present, it was an excellent opportunity to observe.
After receiving their food, the prisoners orderly sat down at the tables to eat.
There was no strict rule about where to sit, but there was an unspoken understanding among them about whose place was where and who sat with whom; all of this was regulated.
Yang Yi walked slowly forward with the queue while observing the prisoners who had already sat down to eat.
Zhang Yong was also a Huaxia man, which actually made the search easier.
Most inmates here were Black, followed by Latinos, then Whites, with Asians being rare.
Having observed the canteen for a while, Yang Yi hadn’t spotted a single Asian, but this also meant that as soon as he saw an Asian, especially an East Asian, he would almost certainly have found Zhang Yong.
That was what Yang Yi thought to himself.
Yang Yi was about to get his food.
He picked up a plastic tray, a small and soft spoon, and a floppy fork that would never be considered a weapon, and then took his place at the food service counter.
A dollop of sticky, black, sludgy substance was slapped onto Yang Yi’s plate with a splat, the unidentified mass resembling beans, accompanied by two slices of bread and a drink that was obviously over-colored.
To Yang Yi’s surprise, there was even a piece of meat, white, probably chicken.
Though it looked unappetizing, it was still meat.
However, as Yang Yi carried his tray and followed Chris in search of a table he could sit at, he quickly noticed a Black inmate standing to one side of the queue with a plate in hand.
As other prisoners who had gotten their food passed by the man, many were placing the piece of meat from their own plates onto the Black man’s plate.
Yang Yi immediately understood—this was the jail bully.
There were no buffets in prison, nor was it a place to live comfortably.
The prison food would leave Yang Yi half full, barely enough to stick between the teeth of the hefty or pot-bellied men.
Since nobody could be satisfied, the taste hardly mattered.
Filling the stomach was the top priority, and under such circumstances, it became normal for jail bullies to snatch food from other prisoners.
Watching the prisoners, one by one, silently surrender their best food without any complaints, and the guards turn a blind eye to it all, Yang Yi knew this was the unspoken rule of the prison.
Yang Yi was about to approach the Black man who was collecting slices of meat.
He was thinking, should he give up his meat?
It was Yang Yi’s first meal in prison, he wasn’t hungry, and he had no appetite for the food on his plate; whether he could stomach it was another question.
But he couldn’t just hand over his food.
Because if he didn’t resist the first time, it would be very difficult to muster the courage to resist later.
That was one reason.
In the future, Yang Yi would certainly need to exercise often, and he would need plenty of food.
That was another reason.
If he did not resist at first and then stopped giving away his food later when he had needs, it would provoke much fiercer reactions.
And that was yet another reason.
So, Yang Yi would definitely not hand over his meat to others.
Chris was right in front of Yang Yi.
He stood in front of a Black man on the side, paused slightly, and handed over the chicken from his tray.
Yang Yi could tell that Chris was extremely reluctant to part with the meat, but he showed no resistance, nor did he even express any discontent.
Yang Yi followed Chris thinking to pass by quietly, but the Black man with the tray was not begging; he was using his power to plunder others’ food, which was a very different thing.
“Hey, you, stop.”
Yang Yi looked towards the Black man beside him.
The man opened his mouth to reveal a set of white teeth, and with a menacing sneer, he whispered lowly, “Are you blind?
Be smart, put your meat on this tray and then get lost, or you’re dead meat, sissy!”
Yang Yi glanced at the Black man.
He didn’t say anything too hard that might provoke a conflict, nor did he choose to remain silent.
He simply said coolly, “Stay away from me.
You don’t bother me, and I won’t bother you.”
After speaking, Yang Yi continued walking with his tray, while the Black man just stared at him fiercely, saying nothing.
Of course, such an incident couldn’t just end there.
The prison bully would naturally take measures to maintain his authority, but Yang Yi had already prepared himself for what he had to face sooner or later.
Chris sat at a table by himself.
Yang Yi naturally walked over to the only person he knew and said softly, “Can I sit here?”
Chris didn’t look up, simply responding lightly, “You can.”
Yang Yi sat opposite Chris, and when Chris saw the piece of chicken on Yang Yi’s plate, he looked up slightly, a hint of surprise in his voice as he said softly, “That really wasn’t a wise choice.”
Yang Yi replied quietly with a smile, “Thanks, but I am not afraid.”
Chris frowned and asked, “You got a gang protecting you?” freёwebnoѵel.com
“Uh, no.”
Chris let out a sigh, shook his head, and then said softly, “If you don’t want to be sent to the infirmary with some serious wounds on your face and body, then you’d better find a way to deal with this trouble.”
Yang Yi asked softly, “How can I deal with it?”
Chris looked at Yang Yi and then said calmly, “A solution will come soon, just wait.”
