Standing Next To You-Chapter 413: We’ll be returning
Chapter 413: We’ll be returning
The first flight lasted four hours, and after a transfer, the journey continued for another six hours.
Bei Sangyun only stopped in Country X for an hour of rest before boarding another flight to Country Y. Despite the ten hours of travel, she couldn’t sleep and was thoroughly exhausted.
By the time the plane landed in Country Y, light snow was falling. Fortunately, Maid Ye Zhai and Fei Chuan had packed some winter clothes in her suitcase. After sleeping for five hours at the hotel, Bei Sangyun felt refreshed and headed to the house where Grandma Pei was staying.
The unfamiliar scenery passing by the car window did little to interest Bei Sangyun. She frowned as she dialed Fei Chuan’s number. She had messaged him as soon as she arrived at the hotel, but since it was past midnight, she hadn’t expected an immediate reply.
However, seven hours had passed since then. By now, Fei Chuan should have had breakfast and seen her messages. But he hadn’t replied at all.
And now, his phone was off.
Bei Sangyun next called Grandma Pei. The phone rang, and she waited for an answer.
The car stopped in front of a two-story house with a large yard.
"We’re here, Miss," the driver said in a fluent Western accent.
"Thank you." Bei Sangyun paid in cash. She stood in front of the house with her suitcase, she kept her phone to her ear, waiting for Grandma Pei to answer.
Finally, after the fifth attempt, the call connected.
Bei Sangyun brightened up. "Good morning, Grandma Pei. How are you all doing?"
"Oh... it’s you, Sangyun. W-we’re fine... How about you? Have you arrived yet?"
The call was a bit choppy, and Grandma Pei’s voice was unclear, but Bei Sangyun could still make out what she was saying.
"Yes, I’m in front of the house now. I messaged Fei Chuan earlier, but I fell asleep. I called him too, but he didn’t answer. Is he busy?"
"...The young master is...currently...in his room right now..." Grandma Pei’s voice was faint, and with the poor signal, Bei Sangyun could only catch some of her words.
"Oh, he must be busy with something. If he comes out, could you let him know that I’m at Grandma’s house? I’ll call him back later."
"...s-sure. You take care, Sangyun... have fun there."
"You take care too, Grandma. I’ll check in again later."
Though she was slightly disappointed that she hadn’t spoken with Fei Chuan for half a day, she wasn’t too worried. She knew that once Fei Chuan started working, he became deeply focused, and no one could interrupt him. She also didn’t want to get in his way.
After reminding him to take care and not overwork himself through a message, Bei Sangyun put the matter at the back of her mind.
Right now, she was too excited to meet Grandma Bei.
Bei Sangyun hugged herself, trying to keep out the cold. Despite wearing a winter coat, her body was still adjusting to the cold weather in Country Y.
She slipped her phone back into her pocket and approached the house’s gate with an eager heart.
She rang the doorbell, and a moment later, a gruff voice with a strange accent asked, "Who is this?"
Bei Sangyun spoke through the intercom in Mandarin, "It’s me. How are you, Guard Huang?"
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds, followed by a gasp. The guard must have checked the camera and recognized her.
"Y-Young Miss!"
"Shhh. Don’t be too loud. Is Grandma there?"
"Y-yes. She’s in her room."
"Alright. Don’t call her. Just open the door for me."
After a short pause, the gate opened. Bei Sangyun entered, and Guard Huang came running out to take her suitcase.
"Are you here to visit Madame Bei, or are you staying for a while?" Guard Huang asked as he respectfully led Bei Sangyun inside the house.
"We’ll be returning to country C."
Guard Huang was stunned, then grinned happily. "Finally! I miss the food back home. The winter here is too cold. I want to visit the beach."
Bei Sangyun glanced at him, and her gaze made Guard Huang fall silent. He realized he was walking with the formidable boss, not the kind-hearted old lady.
"...Of course, I’m excited for Madame Bei to visit the beach..." he quickly corrected himself.
Bei Sangyun turned away and continued walking inside the house. "How is Grandma doing lately? How’s the treatment going? Has she fallen ill? Tell me everything that’s happened, especially the bad things." Although she spoke with Grandma Bei every other day, Grandma Bei only shared the good news with her.
"Everything is going well. The treatment is progressing smoothly, though Madame Bei often can’t sleep because she misses the countryside. She’s taken up gardening, but when winter came, it became harder for her to sleep. I’ve been making her some herbal tea to help; it works sometimes."
Bei Sangyun nodded, feeling a pang of guilt and sadness. Grandma Bei had never mentioned her struggles with sleeping. She always said the place and weather were fine and that she loved it here.
But of course, her grandma would feel homesick. After spending more than sixty years in the countryside, suddenly bringing her to a foreign place where she had no acquaintances and no familiarity with the surroundings must have made her feel out of place.
Bei Sangyun lowered her head, realizing how thoughtless she had been. She had planned to let her grandma live here until graduation, not considering how lonely and isolated she might feel. She felt like a terrible granddaughter.
As Bei Sangyun reached the second floor, she paused in front of the largest room, where Grandma Bei was staying. She had chosen this room to give her the best, but now, thinking about it, it was a stark contrast to the small hut her grandma had lived in all her life. Being placed in such a large room, Grandma Bei must have felt it was empty.
Bei Sangyun knocked on the door.
Grandma Bei’s raspy voice came from inside, "I don’t need you to bring me tea, Guard Huang—" The door opened, and Grandma Bei appeared behind it.
She had been expecting Guard Huang to come again to persuade her to drink some expensive tea, but she didn’t want to burden him, so she was about to refuse.
But her words caught in her throat when she saw who was standing at the door.
"...Sangyun?"
Bei Sangyun smiled, her eyes filling with tears. "It’s me, Grandma. I missed you."
Grandma Bei’s face lit up with disbelief and happiness as she looked Bei Sangyun up and down, as if checking to see if she was truly there. "Oh my goodness, my granddaughter..."
She hugged Bei Sangyun tightly, her eyes welling with tears.
Bei Sangyun hugged her back, the familiar scent of Grandma Bei bringing her back to her childhood days when they lived peacefully in that small hut.
"I’m sorry, Grandma. I made you wait so long. Please forgive this undutiful granddaughter."
"What are you saying? There’s no granddaughter as good as you." Grandma Bei looked at Bei Sangyun again, feeling her arms. "...Have you eaten? What would you like to eat? I’ll cook for you."
Though surprised by Bei Sangyun’s unexpected visit, Grandma Bei was so overwhelmed with happiness that all she wanted to do was take care of her granddaughter.
The two bonded in the kitchen, and after sharing a meal together, Grandma Bei finally calmed down enough to ask about Bei Sangyun’s situation.
"Is it alright for you to be here?" she asked, worried that her visit might have been a burden. Grandma Bei still believed that Bei Sangyun’s situation with the Lin family was difficult, despite her granddaughter’s constant reassurances that everything was fine.
Bei Sangyun held her hand. "Grandma, I have something to tell you." She looked her grandmother in the eyes and smiled. "I’m leaving the Lin family. I want to change my name back to Bei."
Grandma Bei was silent for a few moments, then squeezed Bei Sangyun’s hand. "Alright. That family is not good for you. I should never have left you in that place. You should leave. I’ll do everything I can to help you get out of there."
Grandma Bei was willing to risk everything. Though she had little money, she would find a way to ensure the Lin family let go of her granddaughter. She would work herself to the bone if it meant she could raise her granddaughter on her own.
"Grandma, you don’t need to worry about that. I’ve prepared everything. I promised to bring you back so we could live a good life. Now, we just need to focus on living happily together."
Fearing that Grandma Bei might not believe her, Bei Sangyun shared the recent events, omitting the more complicated details and focusing on what would ease her grandmother’s worries.
She told her about how she built a company from the ground up and expanded it, how she made the fourth branch her ally, and how she helped Lin Ginxian.
Though she tried to make it sound simple and brief, anyone hearing her story would be amazed at how a young woman, who was barely twenty, had achieved such incredible feats.
Each story sounded so unbelievable and impressive that Grandma Bei had a hard time processing it all.
She looked at her granddaughter with wide, shocked eyes. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm
She had always known her granddaughter was smart, even a genius from a young age. But for her to accomplish so much at such a young age... Grandma Bei felt this was something beyond what even a genius could achieve.
"...You... you’re not doing anything bad, are you?" Grandma Bei suddenly asked after a long silence.
"...Doing bad?" Bei Sangyun’s heart skipped a beat.
What did Grandma Bei mean by "bad"? Was she referring to how she had crushed her enemies to clear the path ahead of her?
