Standing Next To You-Chapter 418: Looking for a cure
Chapter 418: Looking for a cure
However, her confidence began to waver when, the next day, Fei Chuan still hadn’t regained consciousness. Worse, he started coughing up blood.
Bei Sangyun had fallen asleep beside him, but she was abruptly woken by strange sounds coming from his direction. When she looked up, she saw Fei Chuan convulsing with violent coughs. Then, a trickle of blood seeped from his mouth.
All traces of sleepiness vanished. Bei Sangyun immediately helped Fei Chuan sit up, terrified that he might choke on his own blood. Though his eyes remained closed, he continued to cough instinctively, blood still flowing from his mouth.
As Bei Sangyun watched the blood continuously trickle from the corner of his lips, her heart pounded with fear. No matter how much she wiped it with her sleeve, the blood kept flowing.
"...Fei Chuan, oh god... so much blood..."
His coughing grew weaker and weaker, yet the amount of blood pouring from his mouth increased.
Bei Sangyun felt as though her heart had stopped at the sight of all that blood. But Fei Chuan still didn’t stop. Some of the blood even splattered onto her shirt.
"D-doc... Doctor!" Bei Sangyun called out in panic.
The door burst open. Grandma Pei and Doctor Jang rushed in. It seemed they had been in the middle of breakfast, but their appearances were the last thing on anyone’s mind.
"He’s coughing up too much blood!" Bei Sangyun cried out in panic.
Doctor Jang helped her position Fei Chuan so he wouldn’t choke on his own blood. Meanwhile, Grandma Pei quickly fetched a warm basin of water and towels, then began wiping the blood from Fei Chuan’s face and neck.
Bei Sangyun was pushed aside, unsure of what to do.
Her hands and shirt were stained with Fei Chuan’s blood. She felt a deep chill as she watched him weakly cough. His face was deathly pale, and he barely had the strength to keep coughing.
"...Fei Chuan..."
Doctor Jang administered several more injections of a transparent fluid into Fei Chuan’s body.
As things slowly calmed down, Bei Sangyun finally found her trembling voice.
"...W-why... why is there so much blood?" Bei Sangyun muttered.
"This is a normal occurrence when his illness relapses. Today, he didn’t cough up as much blood as he did in the past few days. But if this continues, the transfusion fluid won’t be enough to help him," Doctor Jang said, delivering the grim news.
Bei Sangyun bit her lip, her entire body trembling.
Grandma Pei glanced at her, noticing the bloodstains. She set the basin aside and gently placed a hand on Bei Sangyun’s shoulder.
"Young Miss, why don’t you step out for a moment and freshen up? I’ll change Young Master’s clothes."
"I..." She hesitated, not wanting to leave, but Grandma Pei patted her shoulder firmly. "You need to take care of yourself first before you can take care of him. Don’t worry, I’ll watch over him. Come back once you’re done. Besides, your grandmother is waiting to have breakfast with you."
Grandma Pei was determined to send her out of the room to catch her breath. Bei Sangyun glanced at Fei Chuan on the bed. "...Okay."
She stepped out of the room and made her way to the bathroom in a daze. The moment the door closed behind her, Bei Sangyun slumped to the ground, her limbs weak. She stared at the blood on her hands.
This was the first time she had witnessed Fei Chuan coughing up blood due to his illness. Seeing it firsthand terrified her.
To think Fei Chuan had endured this every time his illness relapsed. For years, this cycle had repeated endlessly. He had been in so much pain, and she couldn’t even imagine how much worse it could be.
Bei Sangyun moved to the sink and washed her hands, but they wouldn’t stop trembling.
How long... how long would he have to endure this?
Would he have to suffer until the cure she’d seen in her past life was finally discovered?
But that wouldn’t happen for several decades. Did he really need to suffer for so long—falling ill, unconscious for days, helpless and bedridden as he coughed up so much blood?
She... she couldn’t bear to watch him vomit blood like that again. She couldn’t take it, and she wouldn’t take it.
Bei Sangyun glanced at her reflection in the mirror. The rims of her eyes were red.
She shouldn’t just stand here, scared and watching from the sidelines. She needed to find a solution quickly. She decided she wouldn’t wait—she would find that cure herself.
It took Bei Sangyun a long time before she finally left the bathroom. She couldn’t eat much, and Grandma Pei understood.
She returned to Fei Chuan’s room. Grandma Pei had cleaned up the mess, and Fei Chuan was now clean and resting peacefully.
Bei Sangyun took his thin hand in hers and sat quietly beside him, lost in her own deep thoughts.
When Grandma Pei came in to check on them, Bei Sangyun finally spoke.
Her voice was hoarse, "Grandma... I’ve been thinking about the story you told me. You said that the great monk visited the Fei mansion again, and that’s when Fei Chuan’s condition stabilized. Do you think the great monk did something?"
Grandma Pei paused, recalling those chaotic moments.
"...Everyone was feeling hopeless at the time. Most of us had given up. Even I thought he would succumb to his fate. He was vomiting so much blood... He was so small, yet the amount of blood he lost was overwhelming. We couldn’t help but fear the worst."
Grandma Pei’s voice trembled, her memories of that chilling past mingling with the sight of the Young Master’s current frail state.
"...He wasn’t doing well at all. But after the great monk’s visit, his condition—one we had thought helpless—suddenly started to improve. Day by day, he got better and better until he fully recovered. Witnessing that miracle, I couldn’t help but attribute the Young Master’s recovery to the great monk. That’s what everyone believed."
Bei Sangyun was quiet for a moment. Then she asked, "What do you think that monk did?" freewēbnoveℓ.com
"I don’t know," Grandma Pei replied. "It was only him and Head Master Fei who went into the Young Master’s room that time. I have no idea what they did or what they talked about. The only person who knows is Head Master Fei."
"...Do you know where the great monk lives?" Bei Sangyun asked, gently tugging on Fei Chuan’s hand.
Grandma Pei shook her head. "I only heard that he lives in a temple on a distant mountain. Only Head Master Fei and the heads of other reputable families had connections with that great monk."
"...I see." Bei Sangyun glanced at Fei Chuan’s pale face, her gaze softening yet filled with resolve as she gently stroked his cheek. "Grandma, can you keep watching over Fei Chuan? I might be gone for a day or two. I need to find that great monk."
Grandma Pei was taken aback. "Are you planning to seek his divination? Although I mentioned that he might have played a role in Fei Chuan’s recovery, I wouldn’t strongly recommend it. It might all just be superstition. I don’t want you to get your hopes up.
"Besides, the Young Master’s illness still recurred occasionally even after the monk’s visit, so it might have been just good timing that led everyone, including me, to believe in it."
"I understand your concern, Grandma, but I can’t ignore even the smallest possibility that the great monk knows something about Fei Chuan’s illness, no matter how unbelievable it seems. If there’s even a slight chance that Fei Chuan can recover, I’ll pursue it, no matter what."
Grandma Pei still looked worried. "Dear, I know how desperate this situation is. But the last time Head Master Fei invited that monk, he sent Fei Chuan away. I’m afraid something similar might happen again this time."
"Grandma," Bei Sangyun said, turning to face Grandma Pei and taking her hand.
She smiled, trying to reassure her. "I don’t know much about monks or their divinations. But one thing is clear: I’m not going to abandon or leave Fei Chuan. You might not believe me, but in this life, Fei Chuan is the only person I’ll ever consider my counterpart. I will do anything for him. I... love him." Bei Sangyun’s gaze was firm as she said the last three words.
Who would have thought she would confess these words to Grandma Pei before saying them to Fei Chuan himself?
"Just believe and trust in me, Grandma," Bei Sangyun pleaded with her eyes.
Grandma Pei saw the determination in her gaze. After an internal struggle, she finally sighed.
"...It looks like you’ve made up your mind. Alright. I’ll watch over him, even if you didn’t ask me to. I’ll keep you updated and tell you his condition honestly this time. So just focus on what you have to find."
Bei Sangyun hugged her. "Thank you, Grandma Pei. I have another favor to ask—can you also watch over my grandmother from time to time?"
"Dear, Bei Lang and I are already friends. We’re looking out for each other, so you don’t need to ask for such favors. We are all family."
"Thank you, Grandma. I’ll leave Fei Chuan and the villa in your care."
Afterward, Bei Sangyun visited Grandma Bei and had a short talk with her. Grandma Bei had been supportive and didn’t want to burden her, so she quickly agreed to everything.
With that, Bei Sangyun left the villa and headed toward the Fei mansion.
