The Creatures That We Are-Chapter 1115: Scheme
Chapter 1115: Scheme
Within thirty seconds, Vermilion Bird, Nainai, and White Dew reached the town's middle school, but Zhou Jing was nowhere in sight. They landed on the water tank where Liao Liao and Ke Yo waited.
Liao Liao almost burst into tears of joy when she saw Vermilion Bird and Nainai, and with White Dew added to their ranks. Of course, she had maintained a poker face.
Vermilion Bird said unprompted, “We’ve got them back. Little Hong’s taking care of them.”
Wonderful!
Liao Liao looked up at the moon above, not daring to relax her guard for a second.
“How are things on this end?” Vermilion Bird surveyed the two separate battlefields from their vantage point.
“No casualties yet,” Liao Liao responded.
Vermilion Bird frowned. “Do we have a chance?”
“The death monsters haven’t gone all out.” Liao Liao made sure to add with emphasis, “Neither have we, of course.”
Vermilion Bird let out a sigh of relief. Things were still salvageable. It seems that we aren’t the only ones trying to buy time, she thought. The death monsters are still preserving strength. What are they waiting for? For Gao Yang to appear?
Are they so confident that they will defeat us? Without Pride and Envy here, we may stand a chance once Gao Yang arrives...
“Watch out!” White Dew warned.
Vermilion Bird and the others tensed as a twisted presence descended from above. A dark red crack split the moon's surface, which writhed as if infested with worms. The crack opened sideways, revealing a massive vertical eye the color of blood.
It slowly darted down to look at the awakeners atop the water tank. Vermilion Bird felt like there were needles prickling her back—no, she felt like she was enveloped by dense needles. The chilling anticipation of being pricked aroused a deep primal fear in her.
She focused her mind, fighting to contain the terror. The others struggled against the same suffocating sensation.
Boom! A gray blur shot diagonally toward the water tank.
“Watch out!”
Nainai swept all her companions to safety on a gust of wind, namely Vermilion Bird, White Dew, Liao Liao, and Ke Yo. The human missile crashed into the tank, sending water and debris flying.
Upon safe landing, Vermilion Bird and the others realized to their shock that the figure was War Tiger. Mark's punch had launched him through the tank. War Tiger knelt in the rubble, blood seeping through his shredded clothes, one arm missing. Only his buried greatsword kept him upright as he gasped for air.
Qing Ling arrived on her blade three seconds later. Blood and sweat matted her hair to her face, and injuries dotted her heaving form.
“Trash!” Mark growled from a hundred meters away, similarly covered in blood and wounds. One of his quickly spinning “horn scimitars” had lost a chunk. “This is all you’ve got? You aren’t even enough to warm me up!”
Rage blazed in War Tiger and Qing Ling's eyes.
Qing Ling called her two blades back and said icily, “I want to kill him.”
“Well, so do I!” War Tiger spat out blood.
Now that they were in agreement, they readied Equivalent Exchange, preparing to unleash everything against Mark.
“Calm down!” Vermilion Bird arrived just in time to stop them. She placed her hands on their shoulders for emergency treatment. “Look at the sky.”
War Tiger and Qing Ling, their focus having been locked on Mark, finally lifted their gaze. The artificial moon had vanished, replaced by a massive crimson eye hanging vertically in the night sky.
“What the hell is that?” War Tiger exclaimed.
“When did it appear?” Qing Ling asked.
Vermilion Bird said gravely, “I don’t know. It just appeared and replaced the moon.”
“It’s a death monster.” Liao Liao rushed over and shared her speculation. “Must be Greed. The other death monsters have all shown themselves.”
That was when Adept Horse landed beside them, Mischievous Monkey and Gregor held secure in his grip. He released them, then pulled an empty bottle from his pocket and tossed it forward.
Bam! The bottle vanished mid-air, replaced by Dead Pig's massive form as he crashed to the ground, blood-soaked and battered.
Gregor immediately summoned his poisonous wind to circle the group, deterring the enemies from approaching.
“This isn’t working!” Adept Horse strode up to Dead Pig to treat him. “We can’t win. Gluttony has a strange form. Regular attacks don’t work on him.”
“What do you think, Liao Liao?” Vermilion Bird had been away on a rescue mission. She didn’t know what had happened here, so she had to turn to Liao Liao, who was the smartest among them after Dr. Jia and Gao Yang.
Liao Liao had an intense look on her face. She couldn’t afford to worry about Gluttony now. She was thinking about something else, something that warranted more of her attention:
The giant eye is obviously Greed’s power—or second form.
It feels to me like some sort of domain or forcefield as well, but I think Wang Shu’s domain should prevent other forcefields or domains from establishing.
That means Sloth must have taken down her domain when Greed used her power.
That’s right! Wang Shu must have deactivated her domain secretly when she said she was drowsy and went to sleep. Had she left only an illusion then?
If so, Ke Yo should’ve noticed!

I told her to use her whistle every few seconds to check if Wang Shu’s domain was still up in case Wang Shu pulled something.
“What’s with you, Ke Yo?” Liao Liao demanded anxiously. She didn’t have the mind to worry about her tone. “Wang Shu’s domain is down. Why didn’t you tell—”
She stopped, noticing Ke Yo’s strange state.
“Ke Yo?” Then Vermilion Bird took note, too. “Are you alright?”
Ke Yo looked dazed. Her body was swaying, like she was sleepwalking. She looked up at the giant vertical eye, looking like a woman possessed. Her lips parted, her voice too soft to be heard.
But Vermilion Bird read the words from her lips.
“Coming...She’s arrived...”
