The Evolution of Genius: Every Night, I Get Smarter!-Chapter 117: Escape
Chapter 117: Escape
Throughout the day, I messaged multiple people through the graynet, ensuring that the special batches of drugs would be produced on time in each laboratory.
In addition to coordinating the production of special drug batches, I ensured that extra funds would be allocated to drug dealers distributing the substances to other planets.
Recalling Therion’s remarks about his planet, I particularly focused on planets connected to Atar, the Dylath-Leen colony of the Pan-human Order.
Despite the substantial cost, I invested heavily in sending drugs to these planets, a move that might be viewed as a significant loss by my subordinates. However, with complete control over decisive rights, I could execute my plans as I saw fit.
...
Keeping up appearances of normalcy despite the covert actions I oversaw behind the scenes, I got up and drove to school the next day.
I parked near the school and walked towards the building with the others.
Even before entering the school, Mark approached me.
Despite almost everyone in the school taking the drugs, Mark never tasted even a little bit of them—respect to that man.
As we entered the corridor, I could see that many of the students didn’t even bother hiding their drugs anymore.
When almost the majority of your world engages in a particular behavior, there’s little need to conceal it. Well... except, perhaps, for certain personal activities.
Students were exchanging small colored pouches, and some were even lying on the floor in a state of ecstasy.
The reason why these drugs gained popularity so quickly was the almost non-existent side effects, other than drowsiness. It was akin to drinking alcohol but with much more satisfying effects.
I attended the first class, and as expected, Sharlotte and Imir were there.
Surprisingly, none of these individuals had said anything to the police or the government; their loyalty remained intact.
Part of the reason for this was the occasional free drugs I provided, ensuring their silence in exchange for their continued patronage.
We would meet at the crib, and I’d give them their gifts.
Mark, on the other hand, didn’t want drugs and consistently refused to accept money.
However, witnessing the drugs’ popularity take over the mentality of the entire planet, he eventually decided to join the Cartel.
He earned respect and played a crucial role. Mark helped ensure the Graynet website operated smoothly, contacting dealers and making sure everything happened on time.
After school, I returned home, and time flew by as I continued to contact drug dealers and assigned them their tasks.
The number of rockets leaving this planet increased over the next couple of days, arousing suspicion from the government. However, most of the government was already under the control of the cartel, so there were no major issues.
On the last day before the actual distribution of the special batch, I didn’t even bother trying to hide anything anymore.
Finally, the time came to distribute the batch that had something special hidden within it. The effects of that "bomb" wouldn’t take hold immediately, but in around a week, the first victims would appear.
They wouldn’t die right away—I estimated the time until death to be around a month. On the other hand, their behavior would change over time, becoming more aggressive, eager to pick fights, and inclined towards street violence, theft, and rampage.
Everything was going according to plan. On the planet where I lived, only a percentage of clients would receive the special batch, which would be more than sufficient. Controlling the situation was impossible.
I made sure that as many clients across the cluster on other planets received their dose.
It was a waiting game now. Many members of the cartel had grown suspicious of my actions, but I did my best to conceal my experiments from them.
Initially, I claimed that the products used for the batch had gone bad, rendering it undistributable.
However, as soon as I sent out this peculiar batch that had been waiting on the sidelines, they began questioning me.
Why hadn’t we sent it earlier? Wasn’t there an issue with its quality?
I remained indifferent, just biding my time. On the fifth day, I wrote a brief message for the Maximilian of this cluster.
"As of now, I give you your body back forever. The only way you can survive what was my true goal is by escaping from this planet onto a much less civilized one. The biggest conglomerations of the highest-populated and most advanced planets have already been infected by my hands. I wish you luck."
On the following day, the first signs of my plan working out were showing up. With the news always on to monitor the situation, reports circulated: "The Citizens of the city of Ramp city in Colombia has been quarantined as a strange virus seemed to have wreck havoc."
The news detailed people leaving their houses during the night, engaging in burglary, breaking into shops and houses, stealing, and committing murder for trivial reasons.
As soon as I heard this news, I knew it was time. Ramp City had the special batch distributed six hours earlier on purpose. The news came in four hours ago, meaning that in around two hours, the catastrophic events would begin.
I waited for another two hours.
The city I was in did not receive the batch of drugs, ensuring the first couple of hours should be safe.
As soon as the clock hit a full hour, I heard my mother yell from outside, "Maxi... Maxi!" I came out of the room, and she was watching a random TV program that suddenly changed to a special news message, indicating the highest alert.
"They are saying something about a pandemic of rabies. The show people running around, jumping onto each other."
On the screen, I could see people assaulting each other and even biting.
The special thing about this virus was that it was easy to get infected by air.
The last thing I did was send a message to my father about the need to escape to another planet, maybe this would make them think that this other Maximilian wasn’t involved in this. Especially if he acts innocent.
I looked at the mother and said, "Try and survive if you can," then closed my eyes and thought about my other self.
The last thing I heard was, "What? What are you talking about?" before I opened my eyes on the other side.
...
I opened my eyes and was immediately greeted by the sight of the man in the pink suit. His face looked unusually serious.
He asked, "How did it go? Did it turn out well at least on your side?"
"What do you mean?"
He explained, "Well... it’s not only you being aggressive now. One of our planets had a huge catastrophe happen there. The Zytherians gave up on Earth, but they decided to target different planets."
I stood up from the chair with a serious expression and said, "As far as the Ulthars Cluster goes, they are done. Most of the biggest colonies will be destroyed soon enough. Just send someone there soon to make sure."
The Lord nodded. "Alright. I will send someone there in a couple of days."
As I exited the Jumping Chamber, I asked, "So... what exactly happened? How many casualties?"
The Lord answered, "It happened on one of the planets in the Andromeda Galaxy. Relatively, it’s a planet very close to Earth. They targeted experiments done on the most deadly viruses. Somehow they found out who they needed to jump into to release the viruses, and they were successful. We intervened as soon as we could, but at least 2 billion are dead and over 1 billion are infected. We gave them the antidote. What I’m really worried about is that we can’t take care of every planet. There are just way too many."
I suggested, "Ban interstellar travel then. No two civilizations should be connected in any way by cosmic travel or travel through Observers. This way, we can make sure that people stay alive while we focus on getting to the 4th cluster before The Zytherians."
The Lord said, "This won’t do. Many civilizations are relying on instant travel so much, that they will die out if we ban it. For Coelus, all Agriculture is done on another planet and transported through The Observers."
"Are there many such civilizations?",
He answered, "A few.",
As we rode the bubble elevator back to the Nexus Tower, I insisted, "Then begin confiscating all Observers that are not used for necessary purposes. Each Observer should be controlled by the Government. Do you want everyone to go extinct just because you can’t make the decision to implement a dictatorship?"
As we reached the Nexus Tower, The Lord said, "What do we do about the civilizations that still use traditional travel then? There are hundreds of thousands of those."
I said, "Just visit them one by one. I’m pretty sure that you have Observers on most of them if you had one on Earth. Just stop them from performing civilian travel. That will be enough."
The Lord nodded, "Very well, I will do my best to implement these measures. Also... Scholar Emanuel is ready to give you a rundown on the 6th Layer so that you can start working with us on breaking the barrier to the 4th Cluster."
