Chapter 47: SPIR 102

"Professor, do you have a make-up channel on MeTube?"

"..."

The entire class went silent, staring at him.

Was he crazy?

’I don’t know this guy.’

Lucien hid his face in his palms, not even daring to look at him.

"Your name is William Wilson, right?" Miss Nancy’s voice was calm, but anyone could tell that she really wasn’t.

William nodded in affirmation.

"Meet me in my office after class."

’Deserved.’ Lucien, along with many others, thought.

"And as for your question, no." Miss Nancy stayed professional till the end. "I don’t appreciate personal questions in the class. Sit down."

William sat down, his face not having a shred of regret.

"Anyone else?" She asked, and everyone stayed silent.

Nobody else had the audacity like William.

She nodded and turned around towards the board. "Let’s start the class."

Everyone became attentive.

"But to begin learning about the spirits, we need to learn about the Maw first."

"The information about the Maw is extremely scarce, as since the dawn of spirits, the Maw had been the most dangerous place on the entire planet."

She scribbled on the projector with the stylus and opened a hyper-realistic animation of a massive, grotesque oval structure that had mangled and deformed tentacles popping out of its sides.

It was brown and awfully resembled human skin, with green and blue veins pulsating all around.

Students retched, flinching from the sheer ugliness of the creature.

Only a few students like Mirae and Lucien were able to keep a straight face.

"It’s neither a human nor a spirit, but what we have confirmed from our samples is that the Maw... is a living being."

Eugh!

William curled up in disgust, but got back to normal after a single glare from Miss Nancy.

"Not many people have actually seen the Maw up personally, and even fewer have ever even dared to approach."

Well, there was someone who did both.

But nobody knew about Lucien’s past life. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

"Can anyone tell me why learning about the Maw was so important?"

Several hands were immediately raised, as nearly every Exalt knew about the Maw.

It was the most basic of the basic.

"Yes, Vivienne!" Miss Nancy picked almost immediately.

It was clear that she knew about Vivienne.

A short-statured, cutesy girl stood up.

She had pink hair and pink eyes, clearly artificial, but it added to her overall cute appearance.

Her charm swayed many guys there, but a few even looked at her with admiration.

Saying class 1{A} was packed would be an understatement.

Not only the Rank 1, Rank 2 of the Warrior class were present there, but even the Rank 2 of the Sorcerer class, Florence, and Rank 1 of the Theory class, Vivienne, were there too.

The homeroom class of every student in Lumen Academy was always mandatory.

So, regardless of their departments, electives, or classes, everyone was mixed into them.

"The Maw is the reason why Spirits started pouring into the human realm in the first place. It is a link between the Spirit realm and the Human realm.

"It appeared 1200 years ago in the place which we now call ’Limbo’, and as it grows stronger and achieves a new breakthrough, it allows even stronger creatures to pass through."

As expected of the Rank 1 of the Theory class.

The explanation was very easy to understand.

"That’s right, Cadet Vivienne." Miss Nancy gestured for her to take her seat. "The effects of its breakthroughs are always devastating to humanity.

"Every time it has a major breakthrough, even stronger spirits pour out of the Maw, entire eras change for humanity, and millions of people die before Humanity can fend them off."

Someone raised their hand.

"Yes?" Miss Nancy asked.

"When will the Maw achieve its next reset, Professor?" His voice had a hint of fear, since even normal people fear the Maw, and parents use it to scare the children.

"In this very same century." She answered, her voice sombre, "Possibly in the next few decades."

Silence.

Nobody spoke.

This meant that they would possibly be in the army to defend against another breakthrough from the Maw.

Maybe the path of an Exalt wasn’t always full of riches and fame.

"But fear not," Miss Nancy added, "Because humanity always survives.

"Every time we felt like the end of the world had arrived, heroes like Remiel St. Clair, Cyrus St. Clair, Dantes Capello, and finally, the current strongest Exalt in the entire world, Apollo Hayes"

Lucien had a weird sense of achievement surge through his body.

Hearing his name, he felt a bit awkward in a good way.

But that faded almost immediately as he heard that snake’s name.

He wondered what he did after his death.

Probably died in some ditch.

’Apollo Hayes, huh!’

Lucien wondered how powerful he was.

"Here’s another question for everyone," Miss Nancy asked everyone, "What is the difference between spirits and spirit beasts?"

Almost everybody raised their hands.

This was also extremely basic knowledge for everyone.

Lucien also lazily raised his hands, leaning back on his chair to relax.

He thought that the professor would choose another theory department student, but to his utter dismay, Nancy’s eyes locked onto him.

"You, Cadet Lucien, answer." She maintained the gaze like she would eat him alive.

’Geez!’

"Spirits... are an intelligent, amorphous race that invade through the Maw and various other methods, while the spirit beasts are earthly creatures corrupted by the spirits artificially to create more enemies for humanity."

Lucien went silent after that, and Miss Nancy kept staring at him.

"Sit. That’s right..."

For the next hour and a half, Miss Nancy continuously went over the basics of spirits, spirit beasts, and their history.

Her explanations were crystal clear, and be it guys or girls, they all paid attention inside the class, even though they knew half the stuff already.

"That’s all for today," She tidied her papers and books, and finally added, "Combat class students head to the floor, B-1, Theory students stay here, and William Wilson, follow me."

Miss Nancy didn’t give them another glance and stormed outside the class, standing right outside the class, waiting for William.

William shot a glance towards Lucien, hoping he might save him with his status.

But the poor soul was betrayed.

Lucien immediately turned his head around.

"I won’t forget this, Lucien."
