Chapter 46: Prince Charming

Lesley and Alvin moved at once.

Shadows erupted again, spiking toward him like spears—but Alvin didn’t dodge.

They pierced straight into his stomach.

Lesley stepped forward, placing her hand on his head.

But the moment she did, her arm passed through him.

An illusion.

The real Alvin emerged behind her, fist blazing with wind, aiming for her back.

But she vanished before it could land, reappearing beside a crumbled spire.

Three more Alvins appeared, charging her from all sides.

This time, Lesley didn’t fall for it.

She lunged straight for the real one.

’Killing her would be easy... too easy.’

He dodged her blows, thoughts flashing.

’Maybe it’s because she’s lost control...’

’But I don’t want to kill her.’

’I want to save her.’

He activated the black mist, for the first time in a long while.

It was different now.

Golden specks glimmered inside the darkness, like stars in a night sky.

Alvin shook his head, forcing focus.

The mist blocked Lesley’s view—no shadows, no tricks.

Multiple illusions struck from different angles.

Then Lesley responded.

A burst of shadows exploded outward from Lesley body.

Dozens of spikes pierced the mist, tearing through the air.

The black mist vanished.

One spike slammed into Alvin’s leg.

"Arrhhk—!"

Pain lanced through him.

Lesley walked forward, eyes blank, fist rising.

She punched at him with brutal force.

As the blow closed in, Alvin moved.

One arm blocked the strike.

The other reached for her gut.

Golden energy surged, flowing from one hand to the other like a living bridge.

Her punch and Alvin palm connected,

There was no sound. No tremor.

The force of her punch traveled through the golden current—

—and struck back into her own body.

Alvin’s palm landed on her stomach.

BANG!

Lesley was blasted into the ground.

Dust exploded into the air.

"Cough... cough..." frёewebηovel.cѳm

She gasped for breath, clutching her abdomen.

The glowing runes across her body began to fade.

Alvin let out a long breath and dropped to one knee, blood pouring from the wound in his leg.

Then he heard her voice.

"H-Hey, Whisper... you handsome bastard... can’t you go easy on me?"

He looked over as he saw her smirk.

She coughed, then added, "Why is it always you, huh? Always showing up to rescue me. That can’t be a coincidence... can it?"

She gave a mock sigh. "I guess I can make an exception. Maybe I’ll make you my knight in shining armor."

Alvin gave a tired smile, playing along. "It would be my honor, young lady."

He stood, dragging his injured leg, ready to leave.

But her voice called again.

"Hey, Prince Charming... you’re really going to leave this poor maiden behind? I can’t even move, you know."

Under the crimson sun,

Alvin let out another sigh.

Then he bent down, lifted her gently into a princess carry, and began walking toward the unstable portal.

She winced slightly but didn’t complain, resting her head against his shoulder.

Dragging one leg.

And carrying the girl he’d just saved from herself.

Then again, Lesley being Lesley, couldn’t help but comment.

"I rate your current look a solid 9.6."

Alvin raised a brow.

"But," she added with a teasing grin, "if you tied your hair back... maybe 9.7, possibly even 9.8."

He shook his head and kept walking, ignoring her rambling charm.

In the distance,

Bob and his group exhaled in unison.

’It’s finally over...’ he thought.

He turned to look behind him.

Ten students lay on the ground, coughing blood.

Five had already died, killed not by direct attacks, but by the sheer shockwaves.

The remaining five looked unhurt, at least physically. But their expressions were empty. Their minds had fractured.

His bodyguards had gone.

The old Guide had sacrificed to open the portal.

Five dead. Ten injured. Only five still standing.

This was the cost of their ruin exploration.

Then Lily called out.

"Hey, Bob."

He turned.

She looked worn, but her eyes still had fire.

"Let’s get stronger," she said. "Let’s join Everbright Academy."

Bob turned to glance at Alvin and Lesley in the distance.

Then back at her.

"...Yeah," he said quietly. "Let’s get stronger. Let’s surpass them... even if it seems impossible."

Lily smiled and giggled. "Let’s at least try our best... together."

And with that, she ran off to help the others.

Bob stood dazed for a moment.

Then shook his head with a sigh.

Meanwhile, Alvin and Lesley arrived near him.

Alvin gently set Lesley down on a stone slab, then turned.

"Let’s leave in a minute," he said. "I’ve got something to finish first."

With those words, he walked away.

Far ahead, Robert lay in a pile of broken rubble.

Alvin reached him, gripping the man’s hair and yanking him up from the debris.

Robert groaned as awareness returned

His eyes widened, the moment he saw who stood above him.

The first thing Robert said upon waking wasn’t a plea or a curse.

"You’re the one the young lady wanted to speak with... Where is she?"

Alvin stared at him for a moment, then sighed.

"I’m a bit disappointed, Uncle Robert."

He brushed his hair back, revealing his full face.

"You really can’t recognize me? Your young master?"

Robert’s eyes widened in shock. "Y-Young Master... You’re alive?!"

Alvin nodded.

"Yes. But listen carefully."

He leaned in, voice cold.

"From now on, all you have to do is what I say. Got it?"

Robert, trembling, nodded without hesitation.

When Alvin returned to the group, his expression was unreadable.

He looked over the survivors and spoke evenly.

"You all need to sign a mana contract with me."

It was like dropping a bomb.

Gasps rippled through the group. Eyes widened.

A mana contract—an unbreakable pact formed between two sigil users through touch. Most feared it, for it bound one’s will and power by oath.

But Alvin raised a hand.

"No, I’m not enslaving anyone."

"I just want you to keep quiet... and spread a little misinformation."

"Simple, right? Thing is, I don’t trust any of you."

Then he summoned Rhizome, the eerie presence of the living weapon casting a cold shadow across the group.

"If you’re unwilling," Alvin said softly, "then the lives I saved... I can take back just as easily."

Instantly, the group echoed in unison.

"We’re willing!"

Alvin nodded, satisfied.

"Good. Now listen carefully. These are the words you’ll repeat once we return..."

He gave them a prepared narrative, something vague, believable, yet distant from the truth.

Then, one by one, the survivors placed their hands in his.

The mana contracts were sealed, including with Bob and Lily.

None dared resist.

Eventually, they began filing out through the unstable portal, each carrying a lie in their hearts and a contract in their souls.

Alvin stood at the ruin’s edge, watching the light ripple.

He glanced back at the broken battlefield and muttered to himself.

"The third key... the one only I can find."

"The Lumina Obscura, the thing the Lost One seeks."

"The real secrets... they’ve only just started revealing themselves."

A breath.

A smile.

"Let’s meet again... soon."

And with that, he stepped into the portal.
