Chapter 51: Everbright Academy

Regalia City, Central District — Everbright Academy

Today marked the entrance exam for Everbright Academy, the most prestigious Senior Academy in Regalia City.

Only those aged 18 to 20 were eligible to apply. Unlike the Junior Academies—which accepted students between 14 to 18 and focused on the fundamentals of sigils, mana theory, and history—Senior Academies offered something else entirely.

Combat, Ruin exploration and Survival training.

This was higher learning for those who aimed not just to study but to survive.

Everbright didn’t believe in handholding. Once enrolled, students were free to do as they pleased—so long as they didn’t break the academy’s rules.

But if someone failed to meet expectations or couldn’t keep up with the rigorous schedule, they wouldn’t just be asked to leave. They’d be thrown out, no matter who they were.

This year, however, was different.

Special. Dangerous. Historic.

Because for the first time in decades, students from three Great Families were enrolling together.

A few years ago, during the infamous Seven Families Gathering, one name had shaken the hierarchy—Alvida Vaelcrest.

She’d humiliated heirs from two of those very families.

Now, news had quietly spread among the upper circles.

Alvida was dead.

The public hadn’t been informed yet, but the Great Families knew. And they were celebrating. A monster like her had vanished before reaching her prime—or so they thought.

If only they knew she was already capable of taking on nine Sovereigns alone... and winning.

Still, they saw this as their opportunity. With Alvida gone, the path to the top seemed open.

Their goal? To claim the First Rank in the entrance exam and finally break the Vaelcrest family’s 47-year winning streak.

Everbright had always belonged to the Vaelcrests.

But this year, three Great Families would clash under one roof.

Let the games begin.

Outside Everbright Academy...

Alvin stood at the edge of the crowd, cloaked in a new disguise: blue hair, blue eyes, and an unassuming air.

He was waiting.

More precisely, he was waiting for the assistant Exile had promised.

Just as he glanced at the time, a gentle tap landed on his shoulder.

Turning around, his eyes widened.

Black hair. Black eyes. A familiar grin.

"Lesley? What are you doing here?" Alvin asked, visibly surprised.

She smirked. "Didn’t you know? Father said that from today onward, you’re my assistant."

Alvin’s mouth twitched. "Me? Assistant?"

"Yep." She nodded without shame.

She narrowed his eyes. "So, what do I call you now?"

"Call me..."

"On second thought" Alvin turned, already walking away. "let’s not even talk until the exam ends."

And just like that, he disappeared into the crowd.

Lesley or rather Reyna Lucus, let out a long sigh, muttering under her breath as she recalled Exile’s command:

"Reyna, since you already know his identity, you’ll be his assistant."

It wasn’t a suggestion. It was an order from the Seat.

"Fine... but you owe me big time, Alvin Vaelcrest."

There were over a hundred registration assistants spread out in neat rows.

Alvin joined one of the queues, keeping his head low.

When it was finally his turn, the lady at the desk greeted him with a polite smile.

"Please place your hand on the scanner," she said. "Once your identity is verified, I’ll issue your entrance token."

Alvin exhaled slowly and pressed his palm against the scanner.

’There’s no turning back now.’

A soft chime rang. The system scanned his fingerprint.

The assistant glanced at the terminal—then froze.

[Alvin Vaelcrest]

Beads of sweat formed on her forehead. She looked up slowly, eyes wide with realization.

Alvin met her gaze and lifted his index finger to his lips.

Shhh.

The woman nodded quickly, lips sealed.

Token in hand, Alvin walked away, but a frown crept onto his face.

’Strange... why is there no one else behind me?’

Meanwhile, near the gate, Lesley stood over three groaning students.

"You should’ve waited when I said," she muttered, brushing off her sleeves.

With that, she stepped into line and approached the scanner.

The same assistant blinked as another name popped up.

[Reyna Lucus]

Token number 365 appeared on screen.

"Thank you," Reyna said, pocketing the token and entering the academy with a casual wave.

Time passed quickly as students continued verifying their identities.

By 2:30 in the afternoon, the academy grounds buzzed with anticipation.

The entrance exam would begin in just thirty minutes.

Inside a reserved VIP guest cabin, five figures sat in silence.

At the center was Erwin Vaelcrest, his expression calm yet unreadable.

Seated across from him were two couples, representatives from the Slypar and Noctis families.

David Slypar, head of the Slypar family, was the first to speak.

"Sorry for your loss," he said solemnly.

The others echoed his sentiment with brief, formal condolences.

Erwin simply nodded. "It was her choice."

An uncomfortable silence followed before the head of the Noctis family, Oliver tried to shift the topic.

"So... did you come to watch your son’s performance?"

Erwin’s eyes turned toward the large monitor displays in front of them.

"Don’t ask stupid questions," he replied bluntly. "You already know he’s missing."

The Noctis wife elbowed her husband gently and smiled apologetically.

"Please don’t mind him," she said to Erwin.

As the group exchanged surface-level pleasantries, the thoughts behind their calm exteriors were far from polite.

David Slypar, sipping from a glass of mineral wine, sneered inwardly:

’Too bad for you, Erwin. My son pushed himself to the brink after that defeat. He’s a Late-stage Expert now—and stronger than ever.’

’He’ll dominate the exam, no doubt.’

The Noctis family head was equally confident, though his thoughts were more critical.

’That loss turned my son into a different person. Rude as hell.’

’But his strength... even as a Late-stage Expert, his combat prowess could rival a Specialist.’

’This test is beneath him.’

Yet the Noctis matriarch had a different concern entirely. Her gaze lingered on the screen as she thought:

’Dalton... I know you’re serious about this path, but your father clearly has other plans. I just hope you’re ready.’

Suddenly, the screens flickered to life.

A calm yet authoritative voice echoed through the arena’s speakers,

"All participants, please proceed to your designated sections. The entrance exam will begin shortly."
