“Carson, that’s the spirit!”
Raelynn Howell’s eyes lit up as she gave Carson Flores a thumbs-up, then expertly ordered from the server, “A box of beer, chilled.”
Carson laughed and said, “I don’t mind the drinking, but I’m only responsible for safety, not for taking you home.
So control how much you drink.
If you pass out, don’t blame me if I toss you into a ditch.”
Raelynn chuckled, “I can hold my liquor very well.
If you don’t believe me, ask Rebecca.
I’ve never been drunk.”
Once the dishes arrived, everyone clinked glasses and started eating.
Carson had decided to just eat and drink without interfering in the girls’ conversation, but he had clearly miscalculated.
Both Rebecca Ward and Raelynn Howell were very interested in him.
Raelynn kept clinking glasses with Carson as she inquired about his job.
Carson just spun tales, making Rebecca laugh gleefully.
Raelynn indeed had a good tolerance for alcohol, drinking full glasses without pause, bold and hearty.
Rebecca, by contrast, was much more refined, sipping on her drink as if it were a beverage.
By the end of the meal, the three of them managed to polish off a box and a half of beer.
Rebecca had only two bottles, leaving the remaining sixteen to be roughly split between Carson and Raelynn.
The trio took a taxi to the currently hottest Dream Bar.
While Rebecca was excited, she was also somewhat nervous, as it was clear she wasn’t often in such places.
Raelynn, on the other hand, acted as if she was in her own home, confidently securing a booth and ordering drinks and snacks.
Bars are simply about drinking, playing games, and dancing.
Carson joined the girls in games and had more drinks.
When the upbeat dance music started, Raelynn took Rebecca to hit the dance floor.
Carson lit a cigarette, lounging back in his seat with a content smile on his face.
In the past five years, Carson had constantly been on missions, always walking the line between life and death, with nerves perpetually on edge.
After several years, all of this had really taken its toll, so now that he was back in the city, he naturally chose to lay back and relax.
“Carson!”
A sudden shout caught Carson’s attention.
He turned around and immediately burst into laughter.
On the sofa booth behind him, Sergio Combs was staring at him with a resentful gaze, his face showing an unmasked sneer.
Enemies always seem to cross paths.
What a coincidence to run into him here.
With an easygoing air, Carson raised his glass to gesture toward Sergio, his expression relaxed, even with a hint of a smile.
Sergio gnashed his teeth as he glowered at Carson, then turned to whisper to a group of men surrounding him, occasionally pointing at Carson.
Carson snuffed out his cigarette in the ashtray.
It seemed unlikely that he would be leaving smoothly tonight.
A fight was inevitable.
He had come to protect Rebecca, but his own trouble had found him first.
“Ah, refreshing!”
Raelynn, pulling Rebecca along, came back and downed a glass, “Carson, you should try dancing too.
It’s such a stress-reliever, so comfy.”
Carson chuckled, “I can’t compete with you young folks.
I’m not up for dancing anymore.
I’ve run into a friend.
If a fight breaks out, just stay behind me and don’t run off.”
Rebecca’s expression changed, worry in her eyes, “Did you run into an enemy?”
Raelynn, on the other hand, looked thrilled, “A fight?”
Carson looked at Raelynn, asking in surprise, “Aren’t you afraid?
You seem excited.”
“Afraid of what?
I’ve been fighting since I was a kid.
Look, Carson, see this…”
Raelynn lifted her bangs and pointed to a spot on her hairline, “This scar was from a fight in junior high.
I was hit with a beer bottle and needed stitches.
They said it would never go away.
I was so mad that I found them later and gave them a worse beating.”
Carson was stunned.
She was quite the little fighter.
“They?”
Raelynn explained, “Four guys.
They were bullying my classmate, taking his money.
I couldn’t stand it, so I grabbed a brick and charged at them.
I got hit by a beer bottle, but they didn’t get off easy.
Two ended up in the hospital.
I was so pissed off about my injury that I beat them up again later.
After that, they’d avoid me when they saw me.”
Carson laughed, “I wouldn’t have guessed you were so tough.”
Raelynn explained, “I’ve been practicing martial arts with my dad since I was a kid.
Although it’s nothing special among martial artists, fighting a few ordinary people is no trouble for me.”
Carson suddenly realized why Raelynn had grown up fighting—no wonder she was so hearty and had such a tough demeanor.
“Even if you can fight, don’t get involved.
If someone hurts that pretty face of yours, even if you beat them to death afterward, your beauty would be ruined, and your life would be over.
Just stand behind me with Rebecca later.
Make sure you protect her.”
Raelynn’s eyes sparkled as she looked at Carson, “Carson, can you really fight?”
Carson answered with a smile, “A little.”
Seeing Carson’s smile, Raelynn became even more excited, “Alright, Carson, don’t worry.
With me here, Rebecca will be safe.”
Carson turned to Rebecca with a smile, “If a fight breaks out, there might be blood.
If you’re scared, don’t watch.
It’ll be over soon.”
Rebecca shook her head, “I’m not afraid of blood.”
Sergio and his crew had finished their discussion and stood up, led by a man with large tattoos on his arms, who then approached.
“Rat, is this the punk who stole your deal?”
Sergio fixed a cold stare on Carson, “Yeah, the ninety thousand commission.
He stole it.”
The tattooed man stepped closer, placing one foot on the sofa, looking down at Carson, “Kid, you’ve stolen my brother’s deal, smashed his rice bowl.
How do you suppose we settle this?”
