Chapter 592: Wedding (1)

"What are you doing here?" Ruby stared at the couple before her in shock.

"Can’t we pay our daughter a visit?" Wen Lin flashed a kind smile. "Can we come in?"

"Who is it?" Lin Jian came to take a look when he realized how long she was taking, and Wen Lin and Ji Huifen were not any of the people he was expecting to drop by.

"Oh, look who decided to pay us a visit." He possessively circled his arm around Ruby’s waist. "How are you, uncle? Xiehan said you had a heart attack."

While he sounded concerned, he was indirectly reminding him of the trick he had tried to play on his son.

Of course, Ji Huifen couldn’t simply admit that he had lied. He forced a smile. "I’m doing fine. Now if my daughter didn’t simply disappear on us, I would be better."

"Come in." He stepped aside, pulling Ruby along with him despite her silent protest.

The couple sat on the couches without an ounce of awkwardness. "Ruby, we would like to talk to you. In private."

"I don’t keep secrets from him." She countered. She was not concerned about anything they might do but being in the same room with them alone made her uncomfortable. They figured this out so they didn’t push it.

"A lot has happened with your brother and in case you have heard, he doesn’t want anything to do with us anymore." She started.

Ruby shot her an apologetic look. "I can’t say anything to change his mind if that’s what you need."

"It’s not about that. We just don’t want to lose you too. Could you please come back home?"

"I’ll come visit when I can. I have already signed the lease agreement for my new apartment." She lied.

Ji Huifen must have seen through her but he didn’t comment on it.

"Xiehan thinks we are behind the accident."

She knew what he was talking about. The drunk biker had been caught and she knew it was nothing but a horrible coincidence. Investigation had already been done and proved as much, but Xiehan was still convinced they had something to do with it. So that was why they were really here.

She let out a breath. "I can’t help with that either, I’m sorry. I know you didn’t do it. But you also threatened to hurt Lanni and sided with aunty when she made a move. I would suspect you too if I were him."

They were at a stalemate and Wen Lin didn’t think this conversation would lead anywhere. They had intended to get Ruby to help them pay Lanni a visit as a last ditch effort to make peace but it was clearly not going to happen.

"Well, do visit when you have time." She flashed a friendly smile, which Ruby returned with her own stiff one.

"Would you like something to eat?" Lin Jian offered, trying to end the awkward spell.

"We would love to, but we will be on our way." Wen Lin answered and stood, her husband following her immediately.

He turned after a few steps and locked eyes with Ruby. She could see the plea in her eyes but she didn’t flinch. When they finally left, she stood in the same spot until Lin Jian wrapped his arms around her.

"If they make you feel uncomfortable, I will not let them come here anymore." He promised.

"No, it’s just..." She wrapped his arms tighter around her torso. "It’s unbelievable. I spent my whole life wishing for a complete family. And now when I have it, I realize that’s not really what I wanted. Maybe I just needed more love and wanted it to be unconditional."

She turned around and hugged him. "I already have that. From two men."

"Hey!" He complained when he automatically filled the slots with Xiehan and Neil. "Make that three."

She was taken aback. "You... you love me?"

"Why not? You’re everything I need." He pressed a kiss on her forehead. "And I love you. I truly do."

"I love you too." She confessed, placing her head on his chest.

"Actually, there can be one more person to love you if you want."

Her face flushed. "Slow down, will you?"

He burst into laughter. He had never been in love before. His friends claimed he would feel like she was the only woman on earth. While he did feel that way, he also wanted everything from her. Her heart, her love and her loyalty, and he suddenly couldn’t get her to say yes fast enough.

After two hours of cooking, they finally went to the hospital.

Lanni was having an animated chat with Han Xichen when they arrived. She looked happy, and they guessed Han Xichen must have assured her that the baby was going to be fine. It was rare to see her this happy for the past several days.

She poked her head in. "Hey there!"

"You guys are finally here." Lanni held her arms out for hugs. "Boss, can we have a word? I know I’ve been bedridden for far too long and the company needs me, but could I take one more day off? Actually, I only need three hours tops. I will work from home for the rest of the day."

Lin Jian finally noticed the bag beside her bed. "Are you getting discharged?"

She nodded cheerfully. "Xiehan is handling the procedures." He certainly wouldn’t let her leave the house today. She had two more stops to make so she needed the following day off as well.

"You can..." Lin Jian started dramatically. "But under one condition."

"What?"

"You have to eat this." Ruby held up the bento box she had brought.

"You know I would never say no to food." She chuckled and accepted it, immediately digging in.

Xiehan returned later and let her get changed. She wore a loose fitting dress that didn’t need much work and was done in a flash. Then she stared at her reflection in the mirror, focusing on her belly.

She ran her hand over it gently. "Thank you, baby. Thank you for staying with mommy."

Meanwhile, Xiehan turned his focus on Ruby. "Where are you living now?"

She bit her lip in embarrassment, not having expected him to find out so soon that she had moved out of the Ji mansion.

He didn’t wait for her to answer before adding, "If you don’t mind, you can come stay with us until you get your life together. Lanni doesn’t mind either."

"Thank you for the offer. I’m staying with Lin Jian." She slid her hand to his to hold it.

Xiehan looked between them with a hint of surprise before his face broke into a smile. Something flashed between the two guys. She had no idea what it was but they smiled after locking gazes so it must be a good thing. She found it funny. So men communicated with their eyes too.

...

The following day, Lanni followed Xiehan to B City but she went to the cemetery while he went to the company. Lu Ziyao followed her like a shadow, not that she minded.

She placed the lilies she had brought with her onto the cemetery with Flynn’s name.

She straightened up with a bittersweet smile. "My wedding is only a few heartbeats away. Xiehan is more loving than you would imagine." She spoke, even though she knew that he wouldn’t hear her. Veruschka might come too. And have you met your son? He looks just like you!"

She blinked her tears away. Who would have thought that the man she spent years bickering with would turn out to be such an important part of her life?

Alas, there was no use crying over the past. She might have learnt it the hard way but she now knew to treasure the people close to her more.

So when she left the cemetery, she went back to Li Yuming’s villa.

"Lanni? I wasn’t expecting you." Li Yuming was pleasantly surprised. She was in the living room, watching a movie with Neil. That was the oddest thing she had ever seen her mother doing. And of course, she knew this was where she would find him. He could barely keep his distance from her.

When he looked over, she opened her mouth. "It’s not every day I do this and I might freak out if I delay it so, Neil, will you walk me down the aisle?"
