Chapter 1338: Traitor II

For a restricted area, there is quite a lot of activity around Mirror Lake, but it could be that these people were hunters paid by the mayor to kill Bael lasthe Lady at the Dinner said.

"Would you like to check it out? Jay grinned mischievously.

Lory suddenly felt like she was back in time and the corners of her pink lips curled into a wide grin. "Duh, isn’t this what we came here for?!"

Lory, Clift, and Jay cast a camouflage spell and silently descended the hillside. Soon they caught up with several burly men carrying weapons, who by the looks of it must be hunters.

Three hunters sat around a campfire grilling while one of them opened up a beer and sipped slowly, after that he let out a long sigh. They seem to have come here for a vacation rather than to hunt Beasts.

Clift motioned for Lory and Jay to climb up. With tacit understanding, the three of them simultaneously jumped to the highest branch covered in thick green leaves that conveniently hid their presence but were still close enough for them to eavesdrop on their conversation.

"Are you sure we won’t get caught? I don’t want to have a problem with the King’s Men, you know!" one of the hunters sounded apprehensive.

The second hunter replied casually while sipping his drink, "Don’t worry, the mayor is on our side so no one will find out and I heard there’s some trouble in the capital with King Lucas or something so they wouldn’t have time to care about anything else besides we’re only here for five days, when the King’s Men started getting suspicious we’d be long gone."

The corners of Jay’s lips curled into a sinister smirk, while Clift’s eyes turned icy cold and Lory silently lit a candle for these poor hunters in her heart. These people should have never brought up Lucas’ situation. That was like plucking a tiger’s whiskers.

The first hunter sighed heavily, "I hope you’re right because if the King’s Men catch us, we’re as good as dead!"

"Don’t worry! Why didn’t you say anything when you received the money, huh? There’s no point in worrying now!" The third hunter was annoyed by his friend’s constant worry.

"I know - I know" the restless hunter scratched his head in frustration "It only dawned to me once we got here! If it wasn’t for money, I wouldn’t have dared to mess with the King’s men!"

The second hunter sneered, "You coward, with such little guts, I don’t know how you managed to survive this long in the underground guild."

Lory was stunned, she didn’t expect to meet another hunter from the underground guild after so long.

The first hunter scoffed "With extreme cautious, of course, if not I’ll end up like that wench Bella and her Boy toy Izzy"

Lory frowned, wondering what happened to the people who tried to kill her. So they were dead, no wonder she hadn’t heard anything about them.

What happened that Zhao Li Xin forgot to mention what he had done to Bella and her group because, to him, they were just a small stumbling block in his path, completely unimportant, which was why Lory didn’t know what happened to Bella untill now.

The third man clicked his tongue as he spoke indifferently. "Tsk, who cares, they’re not official guild members anyway, so who cares what happens to them."

"By the way... Is it okay for us to stay here while Bael is out there?" The first hunter now worried about the Bael.

"You’re really helpless" the first one scolded angrily "We’re safe, everyone is safe, the leader has given us a protective amulet from Bael so that the monster won’t come near us so we’re safe, moreover, we’ve been given weapons to kill the monster so what are you afraid of? Just drink and shut your mouth!" he threw a can of beer at his troublesome friend to keep him quiet.

Since they were no longer discussing important matters, Jay, Clift, and Lory left the place.

"So they didn’t pay to kill Bael?" Jay pondered.

"Then what did they pay for?" Lory frowned in thought as her eyes flashed.

"Could it have something to do with the mysterious truck that came and went from this place?" Jay guessed.

"Well, we don’t know what the truck is for, we better wait until it arrives and see what they do with it," Clift said.

"Then, we should find a good place to hide and also keep an eye out for incoming vehicles." Lory’s gaze swept the surrounding area, and soon after she found a high ground hidden behind a giant log.

"What about there" Lory pointing her finger.

"What about over there?" Lory pointed.

Jay and Clift turned to where Lory was pointing. As expected, the place Lory was pointing at was perfectly hidden and high enough to oversee the small road where vehicles passed.

Time passed as night fell, and slowly the bright blue sky turned very dark without stars and moon before slowly white fog slowly descended and spread until it covered their view.

Around two in the morning the lights of a car came from a distance along with the sound of the roar of the engine breaking the quiet night, Jay peeked from behind the log.

"That’s a container truck?!" Jay was surprised because the truck was not an ordinary truck, but a large truck that was usually used to moves something big and valuable.

Lory tucked a small dagger into her thigh then ensured her potion supplies were ready.

"Leave your backpacks here," Clift said then slipped a small device that flashed red light into their backpacks, while Lory and Jay watched the truck’s arrival intently.

The truck was stopped by another group of hunters different from the previous group. Lory didn’t know how many hunters were in this place, but it was certain that there were not small numbers, but what made Lory curious was whether they were all members of the Underground Guild or not.

"I’ll get on the truck, Jay, you follow from a distance, Clift, you’re with me!" Lory gave a short order.

"Alright, Jay, keep your eyes open!" Clift reminded him.

"Come on, I’m a professional here!" Jay rolled his eyes.

Using a camouflage spell, Lory and Clift blended into the thick fog then swiftly jumped and landed on the top of the container without making a sound while Jay watched from a distance.

"You’re late today!" the hunter shouted.

The truck driver stuck his head out the window and rebuked, "You think it’s easy to hide from the King’s men eyes? anyway, today is the last day, the mayor insists to put everything on hold!"

"What?! It’s only been three days and he wants to end it just like that? Does he know we’re not even digging the half of it?!"

The truck driver was even more annoyed, he cursed the nosy hunter "Don’t blame me, I’m just following the boss’s orders, and your boss has already agreed as well!"

"What a waste," the hunter cursed under his breath, but what else could he do? "Whatever, get in, we have to get as far as we can today!" He waved his hand to signal the truck to move faster.

Lory and Clift stay steadily on the container’s roof as the truck moves along the rocky road.

A few minutes later the truck parked on a vacant lot that looked like it had just been built on and then a few men came pushing a wheelbarrow filled with heavy sacks.

"Hurry up and load them all before dawn, today is the last day!" shouted a man who seemed to be the foreman of the place.

The truck driver quickly opened the container at the back and soon people started moving sacks into the container.

"What is that?" Lory whispers.

"Whatever it is, they are stealing from us!" Jay clenched his fist.

"Let’s stop them!" Lory gave a stern command.

"Let’s!" Clift smirk.

His figure disappeared and then appeared from behind one of the hunter’s shadows, he covered the moon and then slit his own throat cleanly without making a sound. Yes, Clift’s Gift was the ability to move between shadows be it humans or objects.

It was the perfect Gift for an assassin, however, in the past Clift hated his power because it looked similar to the dark power and his family was afraid of him because of that even his mother always look uneasy when she face his shadow Gift but after the destruction of his family and he was adopted by one of the Archknights, Clift then met Lory and Lucas.

After meeting them Clift was slowly able to accept his power even proud about it. Later on, he realizes he could use his power to protect Lory and Lucas thus he became more eager to hone his abilities.

Years passed and his painstaking efforts finally made Clift become Lucas’s deadliest secret weapon.

Clift moved from shadow to shadow and quickly killed them one by one without anyone noticing.

No one noticed their comrades disappearing one by one, no one suspecting anything. At the same time, Lory waved her hand, and instantly the remaining people around the truck froze.

Lory calmly jumped down from the truck, surprising the truck driver who was stunned to see everyone turn into ice statues. Lory’s sudden appearance shocked the poor truck driver causing him to fall on his butt.

Lory ignored him as she had more pressing things to do. She went to the cart and untied the sack, a second later, her breathing stop abruptly.

"It’s Zeranium!" Lory’s breath hitched.

"What?" Clift’s figure emerged from the thick fog like a ghost, completely scaring the truck driver.

Clift strides toward Lory and begins to check the other sacks, while the truck driver trembles profusedly.

"Who...who are you guys?" The truck driver braces himself to call out to the mysterious man and woman.

Without glancing at the poor man, Clift replied curtly, "Noxcra."

As if his head had been hit with a sledgehammer, the truck driver felt his heart jump out of his chest and he died, well, if only he had died.

’Oh, no what should he do?’

The truck driver didn’t know how Noxcra agents could be here? They had guaranteed everything will be safe, no one would know what they had been doing.

What a fool and he was the biggest fool, how could he let himself be swayed by money, if he go to jail what would happen to his Son?!

The truck driver turned pale, but like a fish scooped out of water, he still struggled to live, "Please... Please, I didn’t mean to do this—"

"Who do you work for?" Clift didn’t care about whatever excuse the man gave.

The truck driver looked left and right as he thought about how to bargain his way out of this situation. Clift easily knew what the truck driver was thinking.

"Don’t think too much, you know you won’t be able to get out of this"

Clift’s words sent shivers down the truck driver’s spine, he swallowed hard before speaking, "The mayor... he’s the one who asked me to transport these materials out of Ember City"

"How much did you pay?" Lory asked.

He lowered his head in shame, the truck driver said, "Three million Rom...but, but that’s for my child, he’s sick, so I..." he tried to defend himself.

Lory raised her hand to stop him talking, "If you agree to testify, you might be able to get treatment for your child in exchange for your testimony thought you might still go in jail, so what do you think?" Lory gives the man a choice out of sympathy.

The truck driver’s face lit up, and immediately he replied without a slight of hesitation, "I agree, as long as my child is safe, it doesn’t matter how long I’m sentenced!"

Clift heard what Lory said and smiled. He thought Lory was still a ’softy’ even after all this time.

Suddenly they heard the sound of ice cracking and soon the people that Lory had frozen managed to free themselves from the ice that had frozen them.

"Oh, they got free faster than I thought," Lory said calmly.

Clift took out another dagger from his thigh, "I’ll go right"

Lory smirked as she pointed her dagger in front of her face and then prepared herself in a ready stance "Then I’ll go left"
