The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse-Chapter 404 - 397: The City Gate Catches Fire
Chapter 404: Chapter 397: The City Gate Catches Fire
The battle came suddenly and ended just as abruptly.
The short but intense fight unfolded less than five kilometers away.
Gao Yuan had no idea how far the explosion sounds could travel across the Sparse-Tree Grassland. Li Jingang might have learned about it, or he might not have, but he surely didn’t know either.
The Egg Bomb Squad and the two Signal Flag members from Russia might have fought many battles, but they still didn’t know how far an explosion would echo across this type of terrain since they had never fought in such conditions.
Only Sirte and Klaus from the Angel Mercenary Corps knew the location of the battle and its approximate distance.
The importance of experience often becomes apparent at times like this. Others might accumulate similar experiences quickly, but on the battlefield, accruing experience often meant risking one’s life.
Sirte waved his hands, urging everyone to quickly get in the vehicles, then he and Klaus drove to the very front and left the area at top speed.
Why they had to do this, why they had to move—Gao Yuan didn’t understand the connection, but he would soon find out.
As Sirte’s vehicle didn’t stop, the convoy didn’t stop either, and after driving at least another five kilometers, Sirte finally stopped the car because he had found a small patch of woods that could somewhat pass for dense.
The current hiding spot in the woods, in terms of concealment, was inferior to the place that could actually be called a forest they had just abandoned. So Gao Yuan didn’t understand why they would forsake a better hiding place for this one, even if it was farther away. Shouldn’t they have looked for a denser forest to hide in?
"King Kong, I don’t understand. Why did Sirte and the others move us here? This patch of woods doesn’t seem very good for hiding."
Li Jingang shook his head and whispered, "Honestly, I don’t understand either, but I think the Can Opener has his reasons. You need to know something: a veteran with all-terrain combat experience is no ordinary person. So, following their lead is the right move."
Sirte and Klaus had already gotten out of their vehicles, waving their hands, indicating that everyone should get out. After everyone including Gao Yuan disembarked, Sirte loudly said, "Hide the vehicles here. Now everyone, hurry up and chop some branches to further conceal the cars."
Gao Yuan never hid his lack of experience because when it came to fighting, either you know or you don’t. Pretending to know and giving orders could cost lives.
"Hey, Scarecrow, can you tell me why we didn’t stay hidden in the forest we just left and had to move here? Is there a reason for it?"
Klaus spoke Chinese, so Gao Yuan asked him directly.
Klaus paused his work, thought for a moment, and said, "We are on Sparse-Tree Grassland mixed with many woods. The battle occurred about four kilometers from us, but we’re nearly three kilometers from the road. That means, if the Sanitation Workers start searching outwards from the road, our location would definitely be discovered, because dense woods, which offer good concealment, will be the focus of their search."
Gao Yuan had an epiphany, saying, "Oh, I see. It’s actually very simple. Why didn’t I think of that."
The Scarecrow pointed at the nearby woods, then said sternly, "We’re in a precarious situation now because our vehicles have left many traces on the ground. If the enemy really searches along both sides of the road, it’s almost certain we’ll be exposed."
Gao Yuan’s eyes widened.
The Scarecrow continued, "Based on our previous combat experiences and the enemy’s equipment level, if they have aerial reconnaissance capabilities, they will definitely want to conduct a wide-area search with aircraft. What we have to do now is guard against aerial scouting. Forests like this that are not very dense but can still provide some concealment are often overlooked. Those dense forests, ideal for hiding, will definitely be surveilled."
It made sense, and it was indeed simple.
After thinking for a moment, Klaus added gravely, "Of course, the enemy might not scout the area, but we’ve fought many battles with the Sanitation Workers. They are a very rigorous military force with strict discipline. If they should search, then they will definitely send troops to do so. However, the area we’re in is too large. The Sanitation Workers may not have enough manpower to perform a comprehensive search. So, whether we will be discovered depends on how many troops they send. Based on my experience, the chance of being discovered is about fifty percent because we can’t erase our tracks. Therefore, the fight could break out as soon as in half an hour."
"Is the situation that severe? I... had not considered this.
Klaus nodded and then said solemnly, "Yes, so we need to camouflage the vehicles quickly so they won’t be easily spotted from the air. Then we must abandon the cars. The vehicles are too conspicuous, and given the current situation, it’s unlikely we can get through safely."
Gao Yuan understood. It was the classic case of ’the fish suffers when the pond is poisoned.’
It’s the top dogs fighting, but it’s the underdog who dies with nowhere to seek justice.
"We must abandon our vehicles now?"
"Yes, after camouflaging what’s necessary, immediately take essential items and leave fast. We’ll consider crossing the river after dark. Today, we can only waste time waiting."
Klaus’s directive was clear. Gao Yuan immediately shouted, "Everyone move faster, take down everything you need."
Sirte added, "Yuri!"
Yuri, who was cutting branches with a machete, stopped when he heard Sirte call and responded loudly, "What is it?"
"Take your men to the north and establish a covert outpost. If anyone comes, delay the enemy’s actions. Conceal yourselves well, so you aren’t spotted from a distance."
Yuri replied coldly, "You don’t have to teach me."
Sirte then turned to Ralph and shouted, "Hey, you, split your men and go south to set up a forward outpost. Keep radio silence and try to cover a broader width. The recent battle occurred in the south."
Ralph nodded, put down the branch he was holding, turned to Gao Yuan, and said, "Captain."
Ralph knew how to respect his superior’s dignity.
Gao Yuan nodded, "Do as he says."
Ralph immediately shouted, "Egg Bomb Squad, follow me!"
Sirte whistled softly. He said something with a smile to Klaus, who then spoke solemnly to Gao Yuan, "Captain, we’re going to scout the west to prevent a sudden approach by the enemy. We’ll leave the rest to you here. If you must evacuate, make sure to take the inflatable boat."
Gao Yuan replied, "Got it, go ahead."
