Chapter 418: Chapter 411 Everything is Normal

The battlefield needed to be cleaned up, because a lot of useful materials could be collected from the enemy, such as bullets.

Gao Yuan and his team were using the Type 81 rifle, and now the advantage of choosing this classic old gun was evident; even in a place like South Sudan, which hardly had any infrastructure to speak of, M43 intermediate cartridges were not in shortage.

Without enemies, there was no need to expend ammunition. With enemies, ammunition used could always be replenished. This was the greatest benefit of easily replenished ammo.

Then, many vehicles were left, almost all of which were operable. Gao Yuan and his team had just abandoned their own vehicle but now had obtained replacements, allowing them to continue their journey by car instead of being forced to travel on foot.

Lacking something, the enemy would deliver exactly that—it felt too good to be true.

They quickly cleaned up the battlefield—it was impossible and there was no time for a thorough cleanup—and an hour later, Spark Squad set off again.

For a battle fought by the few against the many, achieving zero casualties was something that made everyone feel both excited and proud. Then, deep confusion followed.

"Captain, may I ask you now to explain my question?"

Having obtained a vehicle, Gao Yuan could temporarily avoid Ralph’s question, but Ralph couldn’t hold back any longer, so he ended up asking directly over the radio.

"Now is not the time to talk about this—wait until we stop for a rest."

After speaking, Gao Yuan let out a sigh and said to Li Jingang, "It looks like we can’t hide it anymore, but what should I say? The truth is certainly not an option, and it won’t work to keep dodging the question."

Li Jingang responded without hesitation, "Continuing to hide it would seem too insincere. I don’t know the perfect explanation, but I think you must already have a set of prevarications planned."

"Yeah, I am a mutant, infected by the virus but instead of turning into a zombie, I became what I am now, which is mostly the truth."

"I get it, you’re just leaving out the most critical part, right?"

"Exactly, the most critical part has been omitted."

Li Jingang fell silent for a moment, and then he said to Gao Yuan, "You still need to add something more; otherwise, I’m worried they might also consider getting infected with the virus to try and become a mutant like you. You might not be aware, but I think you should know how attractive your superhuman performance is to them. Everyone wants to be Superman; everyone thinks about it."

After pondering, Gao Yuan said, "Alright, I know. I’ll say that it only worked for me in combination with Shenzhou’s researched antidote, while it failed for everyone else."

"Even if there’s one chance in ten thousand, others will still be tempted to try. If you say it is Shenzhou’s researched antidote, it could lead to endless trouble, so you should use a non-replicable solitary case to explain your transformation."

Li Jingang’s words seemed quite philosophical. After thinking it over, Gao Yuan said, "Okay, I know how to explain it now."

"At the speed we’re going, perhaps we’ll reach Ram’s territory by dawn tomorrow. The distance isn’t actually too far, and I’m just curious about when we’ll encounter Solar System Company’s interception."

It was impossible to just drive straight to Solar System Company’s base—if it were that easy, Solar System Company would have been wiped out long ago.

Gao Yuan looked at his watch and said, "The sooner, the better. If we haven’t come into contact with Solar System Company by evening, we’ll have to stop and rest. At night, visibility is poor, and even though Solar System Company’s people may have night vision devices, I’m still worried they won’t see the flags on the vehicles. Right now, our friend-or-foe identification relies only on these two flags, which isn’t very reliable."

The vehicles they had taken were Sanitation Workers’, and should they encounter Solar System Company’s people, they could only identify themselves by the two red flags mounted on the vehicle’s front. If Solar System Company’s squad attacked without hesitation, it would be a tragedy.

Never underestimate friendly fire; it is an unavoidable aspect of any war and can often lead to significant losses.

Li Jingang expressed his frustration, "Solar System Company’s people are so elusive. Although we are close to them, we have ultimately failed to establish contact. If we had established communication and called them directly with the correct codes, we would have avoided so much trouble."

Gao Yuan laughed, "Yes, establishing direct contact with Solar System Company would certainly be great, but now we know the enemy’s communication frequency."

The most direct benefit of capturing a bunch of prisoners is that they definitely have radios on them, and they undoubtedly possess a radio station that can contact headquarters. By extracting the codewords used during calls from the captives, one can eavesdrop on enemy communications.

If the enemy mobilizes patrol units or mobile forces over the radio, Gao Yuan and his team could be forewarned. Of course, this assumes the enemy hasn’t realized that one of their mobile forces has been completely annihilated. Otherwise, they would definitely change the communication frequency or the codewords used for calls. But as long as the changes aren’t significant, Gao Yuan would still comprehend the meaning.

Because it’s impractical for the Sanitation Worker to use a unique communication code for every mobile unit, so as long as François remains in Gao Yuan’s hands, enemy communications are virtually transparent to them.

Noises crackled through the vehicle’s radio, followed by someone speaking rapidly in English – the same message repeated many times, nothing too special.

"What are they saying?"

"The radio is reporting an enemy sighting at certain coordinates and calling on nearby mobile patrol units to investigate."

The conversation was generally the same. On the vast, open grasslands, countering the elusive guerrilla warfare, the Sanitation Worker had no option but to break up into smaller units, so similar calls were inevitably frequent.

After speaking, Li Jingang said relaxedly, "We are still too close to the enemy’s roadways so we can continuously receive radio signals. Once we get further away, after a few more tens of kilometers, I think we won’t receive signals anymore."

Gao Yuan also replied with ease, "Yes, once we leave the occupied area of the Sanitation Worker, we’ll probably encounter more of Solar System Company’s forces. I reckon it won’t be long before we encounter our allies."

Just at that moment, the radio crackled to life again, and Li Jingang, sitting in the passenger seat, turned to Gao Yuan with a somewhat serious expression, "They’re calling for us, calling for François to report his status."

Gao Yuan couldn’t help feeling a bit tense.

Over the radio, François calmly reported, "Enemy tracks found, in pursuit now, everything is normal, over."

Li Jingang chuckled, "François is quite cooperative, considering he probably doesn’t dare to pull any stunts after how Sirte scared the daylights out of him."

Gao Yuan scratched his chin back and forth, twisted his shoulders a couple of times, then he said with a pained expression, "It sounds normal, but why do I feel so uncomfortable? My whole body is uneasy, like something is off."
