Chapter 193: Chapter 193: What You Don’t Know…

The three followed the original route back to the County Police station hall.

Ying Baiyi stowed his hammer and led the way with his Spiritual Ability Pistol. Three M14s hung from his body, and he carried a bag of ammunition on his back and held two more in his left hand.

Sam was unmentionable, transformed into a walking armory; the weapons and bullets on him alone could arm two platoons of soldiers.

Chen Ke only carried one bag of .45 pistol ammunition, and it wasn’t even full. Feeling bad, he helped Sam carry two more bags of ammunition.

They opened the door and stepped back into the sunlight, away from the dark underground structure, finally relaxing their tense emotions.

The round trip took only about 20 minutes from entering to exiting, but including the return journey, it took an hour. It was nearing 5 p.m., and the return to the Rumi Hotel would take another half an hour. The streets were safe, so the three silently dragged their equipment.

Five minutes into the walk, Ying Baiyi and Sam were already drenched in sweat. They dropped their ammunition bags and guns on the ground to rest.

Sam stretched his knees and sweat dripped off his chin onto the ground. He looked up at the cars on the street and turned to Chen Ke with a curious look.

“Why aren’t we driving? There are cars all around,” he wondered aloud.

“I’ll go check if there are keys,” Chen Ke said as he approached a nearby SUV.

The SUV, a Volkswagen, was parked in the middle of the street, rear-ended by another sedan, but the damage wasn’t severe considering it was an SUV.

The doors were locked. Chen Ke peeked through the window to the driver’s seat, where red dust had accumulated. Keys were still in the ignition on the right side of the steering wheel.

Chen Ke looked around, picked up an M14, and smashed the window a few times, creating a loud noise that was stark against the quiet street. However, he had no time to dwell on it.

“Damn, be careful not to attract those things,” Ying Baiyi cursed.

“If they come, it’ll be your job to keep throwing lightning,” Chen Ke replied with a smile, as he opened the door and brushed the dust off the seat before sitting down.

He turned the key, trying to start the car, but got no response. Frowning, Chen Ke got out and walked around the vehicle, even checking the chassis.

He discovered that the radiator was damaged and the gas tank had a hole. The leaking fuel had dried up over time, leaving only a big, dark yellow stain on the ground.

“Let’s not drive; it’s safer for us to walk and keep quiet,” Ying Baiyi suggested.

“If we could drive, we could outrun them. Surely there’s a place without these vile things,” Chen Ke asked.

“It’s not as simple as you think,” Ying Baiyi replied. He seemed about to add more but decided against it.

“You seem to know a lot, almost like you’ve been here for ages,” Chen Ke said, half-joking, half-serious.

“The Administration Bureau’s archive on such places is more detailed than you could imagine. Do not question me with your superficial understanding… We’d better get back quickly,” Ying Baiyi responded with a cold huff.

“Then I’ll take your word for it, Agent,” Chen Ke chuckled, giving up the search for another car and picked up the bags of bullets and guns.

They rested four times along the way. Sam and Ying Baiyi were exhausted and soaked with sweat, but the seemingly tireless Chen Ke didn’t feel much, though he pretended to be tired to avoid suspicion.

The three returned to the Rumi Hotel and found Diana alone in the lobby, sitting on the reception chair with her feet on the desk, dozing with a revolver in hand.

Chen Ke gestured for silence and gently placed the ammunition bags and weapons on the floor, while Ying Baiyi and Sam also moved quietly.

Despite being a Spiritual Agent from the Administration Bureau, Diana was also injured and not in good shape, thus needing rest.

Still, she woke up. Even asleep, she maintained some vigilance.

“I guess I’m not a good watchman… How long was I asleep? Oh… lots of guns,” Diana said groggily, placing her revolver on the counter and rubbing her face with her right hand, surprised at the sight of over a dozen M14s on the floor.

“Do you need…” Chen Ke began.

“If you dare say I should rest well, I’ll take my shoes off and throw them at you,” Diana interrupted.

“Alright… Alright,” Chen Ke conceded, spreading his hands.

“You don’t look so good, Diana,” Ying Baiyi commented.

“I’m not usually like this, but something happened last night at the Bulland Cookie Factory…” Diana patted her forehead and stood up as she spoke.

Chen Ke frowned. She was there last night too?

“Let’s see what you guys brought back,” Diana said, eyeing the ammunition bags and firearms strewn on the floor, then crouching to sift through them.

They had brought back a total of ten M14 semi-automatic rifles, five bags of rifle ammunition, one bag of Spiritual Ability Pistol ammunition, and sixteen empty rifle magazines.

Chen Ke had privately kept two Spiritual M1911A1 pistols and six empty magazines, so he did not take them out.

Counting the precise number of rifle bullets was impossible, but they had more than enough. The semi-automatic weapons didn’t consume much ammunition; they had brought enough.

“Each of the four of us gets one, with three magazines each,” Sam said. “The remaining six will be given to a dozen selected survivors to take turns on duty.”

Chen Ke nodded in agreement without any objection.

“I don’t need one. This gun can’t be used with one hand, and I still have my revolver… Oh, I only have six .357 rounds left,” Diana sighed as she looked at the M14 on the ground.

“We should have brought back an M9 pistol, look at what happened, we forgot Diana,” Ying Baiyi said helplessly.

“We all assumed she was a Spiritual Agent and overlooked her need for conventional firearms,” Chen Ke spread his hands.

“It’s fine. If monsters break in and you guys aren’t around, I can use my right hook and knee,” Diana said, one hand on her hip, looking at Chen Ke.

“We should still give her an M14… though it might be awkward to use, it’s better than being unarmed,” Sam suggested from the side.

Diana glanced sideways at Sam, who then hid behind Ying Baiyi.

“Speaking of which, I don’t need conventional firearms either,” Ying Baiyi said.

“Right, right… you can throw lightning by hand and conjure bladed weapons,” Chen Ke nodded.

“That means we can distribute eight M14s,” Sam counted.

“Just give me one… I’ll tuck it under my arm as a pistol,” Diana said, holding her forehead.

“Okay, then we’ll distribute seven,” Sam corrected.

Chen Ke noticed Diana frowning slightly, her left arm curled to her chest as if in severe pain, perhaps she had fallen asleep at the front desk earlier to alleviate the pain.

Ying Baiyi and Sam went room to room gathering volunteers, filtering out those who were too old or too young, or those with severe injuries, eventually finding 20 suitable survivors willing to join the defense squad.

These individuals, all with minor scrapes, were the only ones willing to step forward while others still wallowed in negative emotions.

The duty of the survivors’ defense team was simple: protect the lobby on the first floor of the Rumi Hotel to prevent any monsters from invading, as Chen Ke and his team didn’t want these people risking their lives.

The seven M14s were distributed among these survivors, who would decide themselves when to rotate shifts. Sam then began teaching them how to load the magazines and the basic firearm skills.

Some had gun permits but had only shot pistols and lacked knowledge on gun maintenance, so Sam had to start from scratch.

As a soldier, Sam had noticed during his visits that the survivors’ morale was low, mainly due to untreated injuries and issues with food and water.

“We have guns now, and it’s still early. I suggest we head to the hospital right now. The survivors need their wounds treated, and Diana needs painkillers. We also need food and water,” Chen Ke said.

Having guns meant that even if they temporarily left, the surviving people wouldn’t be completely defenseless. With weapons, their courage would also be greater.

“Don’t worry about me, Chen Ke. There’s a little girl who broke her left arm… I gave her my arm sling,” Diana said.

Chen Ke nodded and looked at Ying Baiyi.

As someone who could manifest Spiritual Power openly, taking him along would save a lot of trouble. With Sam now confident and eager to fight because he was armed, he would be a great help.

“It’s 6 p.m. now. The nearest hospital will take at least an hour to reach. The round trip will take two hours, not counting the time to search the hospital, and it will be dark by then,” Ying Baiyi shook his head.

“It will be dark? Are you really afraid of the dark?” Sam laughed.

“I suggest everyone just endure tonight… We can leave at 7 a.m. tomorrow,” Ying Baiyi said.

“That’s not realistic, Ying Baiyi. Look at them, they are still bleeding. As Diana said, there’s a little girl with a fracture. They need their wounds treated now, along with water and food,” Sam said.

“Right. Under the low spirits, many injuries can feel amplified. We leave now, find a car, and it won’t take two hours,” Chen Ke also nodded.

“I have two pieces of advice… gentlemen, first, do not go out at night; second, do not drive here,” Ying Baiyi firmly refused.

“If you know something, you better speak up now,” Chen Ke stood in front of him.

“If you don’t believe me, go out and see for yourself,” Ying Baiyi stood firm.

“Both of you, enough, don’t make me shoot one of you,” Diana said sharply from the side.

Everyone present felt a bit awkward.

“Ying Baiyi, the Administration Bureau’s confidentiality is important, but these are critical times, you should share what you know. Chen Ke and Sam are right, the injured need treatment, and people need food and water to rest well,” Diana, hands on hips, stood between the two men.

“I can’t say much… I only tell you that the continuous noise from vehicle engines would attract something that we can’t handle. If you plan to shoot, it’s also best not to keep firing…” Ying Baiyi said.

“And at night… What happens at night?” Chen Ke asked.

“I can’t describe it in words, Chen Ke. If you’re lucky enough to see what I’ve seen, you would agree with my decision now. It’s better to let them suffer through the night than to try to play the hero and end up sacrificing lives,” Ying Baiyi answered.

After speaking, Ying Baiyi turned and walked up the stairs, resolute in his refusal to leave.
