Chapter 214: Chapter 214: Goodbye, Sweet as Honey

Under her tattered vest, Diana’s toned six-pack was marred with six long scars, deep and wide enough to fit the tips of a little finger. Chen Ke doubted that a few millimeters deeper and her intestines would spill out.

Two more scars adorned Diana’s chest, stretching from her left collarbone across to her right breast, where he could even see white bone.

The bloodstains had dried up, making the wounds less nauseating, but such a state was highly susceptible to infection and complications.

“I have antiseptic solution and bandages. I can only give you basic treatment. You’d better not move around too much,” Chen Ke sighed, taking out rolls of bandages and several bottles of purple medicinal liquid from his backpack.

“Got it… I’ll just whimper a bit,” Diana said weakly.

Chen Ke called over two girls to help, had Sam guard the door with his gun, and then began to clean Diana’s wounds.

First, he tore off the vest that had been ripped to shreds, then removed her jacket, and proceeded to dab the purple medicinal liquid onto gauze, gently wiping along the edges of the torn flesh, cleaning off the surface blood.

He then poured the antiseptic solution liberally over Diana’s wounds, applied gauze soaked in antiseptic to them, and finally wrapped them tightly with bandages.

It took a full half hour and half a pack of bandages to finish the job. Diana’s upper body was so tightly wrapped in bandages, she looked like a half-made mummy.

Chen Ke tore Diana’s torn vest into strips to fashion a makeshift sling, securing her left arm across her chest, then he put her jacket back on and zipped it up.

“All done… Hey… are you still with us?” Chen Ke patted Diana’s face.

Diana opened one eye but said nothing, seemingly conserving her energy.

“Don’t fall asleep now, Diana. You know,” Sam said, turning his head back toward her.

Diana nodded, leaned on Chen Ke’s shoulder, and grasped the Luger revolver with her right hand.

“Where’s Ying Baiyi? Don’t tell me he’s dead…” Chen Ke asked.

“He left with a group of people…” Diana said.

Chen Ke’s mind buzzed, a nameless emotion surging through him, the Sun Mark on his chest spinning wildly. His face was expressionless, but he felt a tingling sensation. Was this anger?

“He left?” Chen Ke found it hard to believe.

“Yes… I don’t know how long I was out, or where they went…” Diana shook her head.

“Damn it…” Sam ground his teeth.

“Chen Ke… oh… Chen Ke… I screwed up… it’s all my fault,” Diana said in a low voice, a sobbing tone in her voice.

“No, it’s not your fault. You did your best,” Chen Ke consoled her.

“It’s not like that… Chen Ke, I got into an argument with him, I used a gun to make him talk… I wasted time, Chen Ke. I should have stayed calm and checked the windows on the floor with him first…” Diana shook her head in despair.

“Listen, Diana, you’re not to blame… If he’d made himself clear sooner, none of this would’ve happened,” Chen Ke said through clenched teeth.

“I always wanted to be a hero, but I always mess things up… I can’t seem to make a difference, no matter where I am…” Diana’s morale was depleted, her tone no longer carrying the toughness and nonchalance of her usual self.

“Diana, you are already a hero, do you understand? The moment you chose to stand up, you became a hero… Look at the wounds on your body, they are the mark of a hero. Only cowards run away,” Chen Ke said as he gently touched Diana’s face, making her look at him, all the while staring into her eyes.

Diana’s eyes were red, a tear slid down her cheek. After hearing Chen Ke’s words, the weakness, haggardness, and helplessness on her face slowly vanished.

“You’re right… I lost my composure just now… Hiss… Damn it… I always thought that having stronger abs could make me invulnerable to blades and guns…” Diana said, her voice gradually regaining its former vigor, but still very weak.

“Can you still walk? We need to go find Ying Baiyi,” Chen Ke asked.

The other survivors hesitated upon hearing this.

“Do you want to stay here among the dead? There were bodies all over the corridor when we came up,” Sam said.

Sam’s words halted, and the survivors let out a sigh.

“The floor is covered with my blood… I feel like I wouldn’t last half a minute even if I manage to stand up, but if you are willing to carry me… we can get going,” Diana said.

“If I carry you, then Sam will have to do the fighting,” Chen Ke said.

“I can do it too, just give me a gun,” said the guy beside them.

Chen Ke nodded and handed him the gun.

“There is a pile of bullets on the floor of the ground-floor lobby. Ying Baiyi definitely took a bunch with him when he left, and those he couldn’t carry, he abandoned,” Sam said.

“Let’s head downstairs first, fill up the magazines; they can’t have gone too far,” Chen Ke said.

Chen Ke let Diana lean against his back, then grabbed her thighs with both hands and lifted her up. Under Sam’s lead, they slowly made their way down to the lobby on the first floor.

Ying Baiyi had taken some supplies, but there was still a gun left on the corpses. Chen Ke went back to get the gun and arranged for Sam and the two male survivors to form a firing squad while the two girls and two children helped to load the bullets into the empty magazines.

Diana sat resting against a service counter, having lost all her ability to move. Without the protection of the group, death was still just a matter of time.

Chen Ke rummaged through the bullets on the floor, finding that Ying Baiyi had taken most of the Spiritual Bullets. He painstakingly picked out 21 silver Punishment bullets from the pile of rifle ammunition and loaded them into his privately held Spiritual Energy M1911A1’s empty magazine.

Ying Baiyi only cared about the dozen survivors he had brought with him. After the crisis hit, even when Diana was seriously injured, he could abandon her without a second thought.

Chen Ke didn’t know what would happen after he found Ying Baiyi, and he didn’t even know where to start looking. Carefree City was vast; finding a dozen people here was going to be a challenge.

With a click, he chambered a round, the 21 Punishment bullets filling three magazines to the brim. Chen Ke tucked the gun into its holster.

“Not to knock you down… Chen Ke… but you won’t be able to use that gun,” Diana said from where she sat, suddenly making a comment.

Chen Ke didn’t respond, walked over to Diana, and rudely shoved his hand under her armpit, yanking her up swiftly.

Diana grunted in pain and punched Chen Ke’s shoulder, saying, “You… definitely did that on purpose.”

“It’s time to leave,” Chen Ke smiled, turned, and lifted her onto his back, glancing at Sam.

Sam got the message, shouldering his M14 as he led the way out the door, with the other two survivors bringing up the rear. They formed a group with Chen Ke, Diana, the two girls, and the two children in the middle.

The last nine of them thus stepped into the night.
