Transmigrated Into The True Heiress-Chapter 59: Passive Observer
Chapter 59: Passive Observer
By 4 p.m., Jania was already parked outside Ephyra’s school, her fingers drumming lightly on the steering wheel as she waited.
Finally, she saw Ephyra’s figure emerge among a group of three other students—a boy and two girls. Jania watched as Ephyra exchanged farewells with her friends before jogging over to the car.
"Hey," Ephyra greeted casually, climbing into the passenger seat. "Why are you the one picking me up?"
"I have something to tell you," Jania said as she started the engine and eased the car into traffic.
Eira arched a brow, leaning back against the seat. "What is it?"
"Master Lyle told me the reason you didn’t post the video," Jania began, her tone careful. "To make what you want happen, he suggested partnering with Latham’s Laboratory and offering a contract to your father’s company to construct a new branch. When that’s done, a banquet will be held under the guise of celebrating both the partnership and the Latham family’s eldest grandson’s engagement. The issue? He wants everything finalized in a week. It’s doable, but there’s a lot you’ll need—an authentic recording, a DNA report, witnesses, and so on."
Eira nodded, her expression thoughtful. "I get it. And you’re right—my plate’s already full. I have an art project due next week, tests the week after, and finals right after that. Not to mention the banquet. It’s packed."
"So, what’s the plan?" Jania asked, glancing at her.
"After we confirm the truth about Marianna and her daughter, we still need the DNA test and all the evidence. Then we compile everything and wait for the party," Eira trailed off, her eyes narrowing as an idea sparked. She straightened in her seat. "Wait! Let’s schedule the party for the week after finals. That gives us enough time to prepare without any distractions."
Jania tapped her fingers on the wheel, mulling it over. "That’s a month from now. Are you going to be the one to tell Master Lyle about the change?"
Eira gave her a sharp look. "Is that why you came? To make me talk to your crazy boss?"
Jania chuckled, unbothered. "You’re going to be his wife, after all."
Eira rolled her eyes, muttering, "Screw you."
The rest of the drive passed in silence, with only the hum of the engine filling the air. When they reached the Allen mansion, Jania pulled up to the driveway.
"No ’thank you’?" Jania called out as Eira stepped out of the car.
Eira swung her bag onto her shoulder and waved dismissively with a smirk. "What do you think I am? Your chauffeur?"
"Little she-devil," Jania muttered with a grin, shaking her head as she drove off.
Inside, the house was quiet. Myra hadn’t returned from school, Marianna was out, and Eliot was still at work. Eira shrugged off the solitude, heading to her room for a quick shower before settling in to study for two hours. By early evening, hunger drew her to the kitchen.
The staff had just finished preparing dinner, but Eira waved off their offers to serve her. She filled her tray, grabbed a cup of water, and returned to her room. After eating, she scrolled through her phone for a while before falling asleep.
Some time during the night, Eira’s sleep grew restless. Her brow furrowed, and her body shifted as a vivid nightmare unfolded.
She found herself in a grand, luxurious living room, though the decor seemed at least fifteen years old. Oddly, everything appeared oversized, and her movements were no longer her own. She was trapped, a passive observer in Ephyra’s past.
The sound of footsteps drew her attention. A younger Marianna appeared, her face glowing with an artificial sweetness, and beside her was Eliot, looking happier than Eira had ever seen him. In Marianna’s arms was a little girl with blonde hair and hazel eyes, glaring at Ephyra with silent disdain.
"Ephyra," Eliot said warmly, crouching to meet her eyes. "This is Marianna. She’s going to be your new mom, and Myra here is your sister now. Treat them just like you treated your mother, okay?"
Marianna crouched, brushing a hand over Ephyra’s hair with a saccharine smile. "Don’t worry, sweetie. I’ll love and care for you just as your mother did. Myra’s your sister now, so say hi!"
Eira’s gaze shifted unwillingly to Myra, who muttered a shy "Hi," without meeting her eyes.
"Your turn, Ephyra," Marianna urged, her tone syrupy yet commanding.
"Hi," Ephyra replied softly, her voice trembling.
"Good girl," Eliot said with a smile, patting her head before ushering her toward the stairs. "Go finish your homework while we get settled, okay?"
The scene changed abruptly. They were now at the dining table. Marianna served food to everyone, fawning over Myra while ignoring Ephyra. When Eliot left after dinner, kissing Marianna and Myra goodbye but only patting Ephyra’s head, the atmosphere shifted.
Marianna rose, taking Ephyra’s barely-touched plate away. "You’ve eaten enough. Go to your room," she said sharply.
"But I haven’t—" Ephyra began, only to be cut off.
"Don’t be greedy, no one likes greedy children especially their parents," Marianna snapped. "Your father wouldn’t like that, would he? You don’t want him to hate you after losing your mother, do you?"
Ephyra, wide-eyed and frightened, nodded silently and retreated to her room.
The cycle repeated, escalating each time. One night, Ephyra dared to protest, tears streaming as she begged for food. Marianna’s response was a stinging slap.
"I told you to stop begging!" Marianna hissed. "You’re just like your mother—always causing trouble. This is your fault. Be a good girl, or it’ll be worse next time. Now go to your room and I don’t want to see you outside until your father gets back!"
This continued until one day, Elma, the new nanny, discovered bruises on Ephyra while bathing her. Horrified, Elma reported it to Eliot, who confronted Marianna and slapped her. That confrontation marked a shift—not the end of Ephyra’s suffering, but the beginning of a more insidious torment.
