Chapter 90: A brief exchange with the wolf

The atmosphere in the forest was thick with tension, an eerie silence settling over the clearing as Lumen and the D tier Shadow Wolf confronted each other. The creature’s eyes blazed with an unnatural, otherworldly light, casting an unsettling glow in the darkness. Lumen’s grip on his spear tightened as he met the malevolent gaze of his adversary.

For a moment, they remained motionless, locked in a silent standoff. Lumen’s instincts screamed at him to be cautious; the D tier Shadow Wolf was unlike anything he had faced before. This was the moment he had prepared for, the ultimate test of his abilities as a hunter.

The silence was broken by a low, guttural growl that emanated from the Shadow Wolf’s throat. It was a menacing sound, filled with malice and intent. The wolf’s body was partially obscured by the folds of Lumen’s tent, but it’s outline was unmistakably that of a powerful predator.

Lumen’s senses were on high alert. He could hear the wolf’s slow, deliberate breathing, feel the tension in the air, and even sense the faintest vibrations of its movements through the earth beneath him. It was as if the Fantasia Realm itself held its breath, waiting for the outcome of this midnight encounter.

With a slow, deliberate motion, Lumen edged backward, attempting to put some distance between himself and the Shadow Wolf. He needed space to manoeuvre, to assess the situation, and to prepare for the inevitable confrontation.

The wolf, however, was not inclined to let him go so easily. With a sudden, fluid motion, it lunged forward, its body a blur of dark motion as it surged toward Lumen. The hunter’s training kicked in, and he reacted with lightning reflexes.

He swung his spear with all his might, the weapon slicing through the air with deadly precision. The blade connected with the Shadow Wolf’s side, a resounding clang echoing through the forest as metal met otherworldly flesh. The wolf howled in pain and fury, its claws raking the air as it was knocked aside.

He hadn’t the time to cast any spells on his spear in the heat of the moment.

Lumen didn’t waste a moment. He sprang backward, putting even more distance between himself and the wounded creature. The forest was bathed in eerie moonlight, casting long shadows that danced around them as they circled each other.

The Shadow Wolf was not easily deterred. It rose to its feet with an unnerving grace, its glowing eyes never leaving Lumen. It was a creature of darkness, and this was its domain. It had come to hunt, and it would not be denied its prey.

Lumen took a deep breath, his mind racing. He had faced countless challenges and foes in the Fantasia Realm, but this encounter was unlike any other. The Shadow Wolf was a D tier beast, a formidable adversary with powers and abilities far beyond those of the E tier Shadow Wolf he had encountered thus far.

The wolf’s movements were fluid, almost hypnotic, as it circled Lumen with a predatory grace. It seemed to glide over the forest floor, leaving no trace of its passage. The glowing light in its eyes intensified, casting an eerie radiance that seemed to pierce the darkness.

As Lumen continued to size up his opponent, he noticed something unusual about the creature. Its shadow, cast by the moonlight, seemed to twist and distort, as if it had a life of its own. It was an unsettling sight, and Lumen realised that this was no ordinary Shadow Wolf—it was a creature of darkness, a being that could manipulate and control shadows.

With a surge of realisation, Lumen understood the nature of his adversary. The Shadow Wolf was not just a physical threat; it possessed the ability to blend into the darkness, to become one with the shadows themselves. It was a predator that could strike from the unseen, a true master of stealth and deception.

The battle of wits and instincts continued, both hunter and prey locked in a dangerous dance. Lumen knew that he needed to outsmart the Shadow Wolf, to anticipate its movements and counter its stealthy attacks. The forest became their battleground, an arena where survival depended on skill, strategy, and a deep understanding of the Fantasia Realm’s mysteries.

Suddenly, the Shadow Wolf made its move. It launched itself forward with blinding speed, a dark streak in the moonlight. Lumen reacted swiftly, sidestepping the creature’s attack and driving his spear into the ground. The wolf’s claws raked the air where he had stood moments before, and the force of its charge sent it crashing into a nearby tree.

As the wolf recoiled from the impact, Lumen seized the opportunity. He lunged forward, his spear aimed at the creature’s exposed flank. With a powerful thrust, he pierced the Shadow Wolf’s side once again. A pained howl echoed through the forest as dark, ethereal energy bled from the wound.

But the battle was far from over. The Shadow Wolf, wounded and enraged, turned to face Lumen once more. Its eyes burned with a malevolent fury, and its shadowy form seemed to flicker and warp as if defying the laws of reality.

Lumen knew that he had to end this battle quickly. The D tier Shadow Wolf was a relentless foe, and its powers were unlike anything he had encountered. With grim determination, he prepared for the final clash, his senses attuned to the subtlest movements and shifts in the shadows.

The forest held its breath, and the moon watched in silent witness as hunter and prey faced off in a deadly dance. The outcome of this midnight encounter would determine the course of Lumen’s journey in the Fantasia Realm—a journey filled with challenges, mysteries, and the relentless pursuit of evolution.

Facing the wolf, he knew it held the advantage over him due to it’s stealth in the night, not even being able to detect it’s presence at all while it was hidden in the vast shadow of the night.

Seeing such powerful methods of stealth of the Wolf’s, Lumen decided that he had no other choice than to activate his own Renowned Hunter’s Stealth in order to stop the Wolf’s constant and relentless ambush attacks on him. He knew that if he kept letting it have it’s way, the outcome wouldn’t end well for him.

When the skill finally showed it’s effects, the Shadow wolf briefly came out of it’s stealth with visible confusion in it’s body language, looking all around for where Lumen could have possibly run off to, yet it didn’t even catch a scent of where he went.

With it’s prey gone, it didn’t linger around the area for much longer before it disappeared once more, not returning again for the remainder of the night...
