Those guys weren’t fools. The moment they saw Xiang Yu’s scars, they realized he wasn’t someone to mess with.
Although they often fought and bullied people, they’d never encountered someone with skills like Xiang Yu’s, nor had they seen anyone with so many scars on their body.
"Do you think you’re real gangsters? Think you’re the toughest around here?" Xiang Yu sat calmly, looking at them as he spoke.
The group sat on the ground, too scared to utter a word. Xiang Yu’s scars had left them completely stunned.
"Real gangsters wouldn’t act like you guys. Do you even know who that middle-aged man you bullied earlier is?" Xiang Yu asked, looking directly at Fatty.
Fatty hurriedly shook his head. All he knew was that the man lived in this neighborhood. He’d heard the man used to be quite short-tempered, but since working here, Fatty hadn’t seen him lose his temper once.
Fatty had often bullied Fang Kuohai, thinking he was just a pushover. But now, hearing Xiang Yu’s words, he felt a chill run down his spine.
Xiang Yu sighed and said, "To be honest, I’m trying to save you because you’re not beyond redemption yet. If you truly pissed him off, you wouldn’t live to see tomorrow."
At these words, the group shivered as if a tremor passed through their bodies, then raised their heads to look at Xiang Yu. They all wanted to know who this middle-aged man really was.
"Want to know?" Xiang Yu glanced at them and asked.
All ten of them immediately nodded their heads. None of them had ever encountered real gangsters and were eager to hear Fang Kuohai’s story.
Xiang Yu’s face turned serious as he gazed out the window, seeming to fall deep in thought before speaking again. "His name is Fang Kuohai. Back in the day, he ruled over three provinces. The man was unbelievably ruthless, though he retired from the underworld a few years ago. But if he so much as utters a single word now, you’re as good as dead..."
Sitting there, Xiang Yu spun an elaborate tale to the group. Already shocked beyond belief by Xiang Yu’s scars, they now fully believed every word and dared not question him.
"Big Brother, please save us," Fatty pleaded, now thoroughly terrified upon learning how dangerous that middle-aged man allegedly was. Just moments ago, he’d been leering at Fang Rong and had already annoyed her.
What if that man decided to eliminate him with a single command?
"Not a problem. Just stay clear of him from now on. You’re not even worth him lifting a finger," Xiang Yu replied.
All of them nodded vigorously. Just as Xiang Yu was about to embellish some more, his phone suddenly rang—it was Fang Rong calling.
"Are you okay?" Fang Rong’s voice carried a hint of concern.
Although she trusted Xiang Yu’s skills, it had been half an hour since he left and still hadn’t returned, making her a bit uneasy.
"I’ll head there now," Xiang Yu said, then hung up. Turning to the group on the floor, he added, "Take care of yourselves. If you’re really still worried, you can leave this place right now. But in the future, stop bullying others. Otherwise... sigh..."
Xiang Yu shook his head and sighed heavily before heading out. There was almost a sense of pity in his demeanor as he left.
Fatty and the others sat in stunned silence for a long while. Then, one of them suddenly jumped up and dashed out the door.
Soon, several others followed suit, unwilling to risk their lives anymore. In the end, only Fatty and two others remained.
"I’m planning to leave this place. You figure out what you want to do," Fatty said, packing his belongings without hesitation.
In the neighborhood kitchen, Fang Rong was helping her father cook.
"How did you run into him?" Fang Kuohai asked, glancing at Fang Rong.
Fang Rong recounted the events from the other day and then reminded Fang Kuohai, "Don’t ask about how he’s doing now. I’m sure he’s got nothing left, and he’s probably in a bad mood."
"Doesn’t seem like he’s in a bad mood to me. Are you sure you’re not mistaken?" Fang Kuohai replied, giving her a questioning look.
Fang Rong rolled her eyes. "What’s so great about being a thug? Just look at him—he can’t even afford decent clothes anymore."
Fang Kuohai chuckled and shook his head. "I don’t see him as down and out. He seems pretty sharp to me."
As the two chatted, a sudden knock came at the door. Fang Rong quickly went to answer it.
"What took you so long? Aren’t you supposed to be some big fighter?" Fang Rong said with a hint of dissatisfaction.
She wasn’t upset about Xiang Yu taking his time; she disapproved of his lifestyle as a thug, and the same went for her father.
Fang Kuohai emerged from the kitchen and invited Xiang Yu to sit down. Sitting across from Xiang Yu, Fang Kuohai studied him for a long moment before asking with a smile, "How’s Shi Jian doing these days?"
Xiang Yu smiled and nodded as well. Shi Jian was now a successful businessman, having left the street life far behind.
"He’s doing great," Xiang Yu said simply.
"You’ve changed a lot," Xiang Yu said, looking at Fang Kuohai.
"Put on some weight," Fang Kuohai said with a hearty laugh.
The two of them sat there reminiscing, talking about everything that had happened since they parted ways. Ever since Fang Kuohai retired, he hadn’t meddled in the underworld again. He had completely said goodbye to that life.
In truth, he had Xiang Yu to thank for that. Without Xiang Yu holding the ground for him, Fang Kuohai wouldn’t have been able to bow out unscathed.
"How have things been lately?" While Fang Rong had told him not to ask, Fang Kuohai couldn’t resist bringing it up.
Unlike Fang Rong, Fang Kuohai was an old hand in the game. Based on Xiang Yu’s abilities, he knew Xiang Yu wasn’t just an average thug.
"Not bad," Xiang Yu answered casually, giving only a general update without going into specifics.
He didn’t mention anything about the Yuran Corporation. Still, as Fang Rong stepped out of the kitchen, knife in hand, she remarked, "Xiang Yu, don’t bother bragging in front of my dad. He’s an old pro. Your lies won’t fool him."
With that, Fang Rong turned and went back into the kitchen, knife in hand.
Fang Kuohai could tell everything Xiang Yu had said was true. The two men exchanged a knowing smile and didn’t bother to argue.
"Xiang Yu, could I ask you for a favor?" Fang Kuohai said hesitantly. After all, it felt a bit forward to make a request right after reconnecting.
"Go ahead," Xiang Yu said.
Fang Kuohai thought for a moment before speaking. "You know Fang Rong means the world to me. She’s a young woman working out there by herself. Sooner or later, she’ll run into problems she can’t handle. I was hoping you could lend her a hand when that happens."
Fang Kuohai didn’t know exactly how far Xiang Yu had come, but based on the stories he’d just heard, he was confident Xiang Yu had done well for himself.
"She’s like a sister to me. Don’t worry. As long as she’s in City Two, nothing will happen to her—I’ll personally guarantee it," Xiang Yu said with a confident smile.
Fang Kuohai believed Xiang Yu wasn’t lying and finally felt reassured, though he was inwardly amazed. Xiang Yu truly was exceptional, and it had been a wise decision to take him in back then.
But Fang Rong, overhearing Xiang Yu’s words, could only shake her head and sigh in exasperation...
