Chapter 141: Chapter 5 Mercenaries_2

The young mercenary was in a daze, staring blankly at the beautiful face of the priestess. Like a puppet, he reached out his hand to lightly grasp the girl’s hand, allowing her to help him up from the ground.

"May Denia bless you, my child." The girl extended her luminous hand, touching the youth’s forehead. He felt a wave of coolness spread from his forehead to the rest of his body, driving away the alcohol, pain, and fatigue. "Promise me you won’t sit on the ground like this again," she said.

"Yes, my Goddess." Warmth welled up in the youth’s chest. He felt an unexplainable urge to cry and fought back tears, responding with a fervent nod.

"So..." The lady priest gazed gently at the young mercenary and asked with her divine voice, "Would you still like to buy me a drink?"

"Dr, drink?" The young mercenary felt a sense of foreboding. Reminded of the outcomes of his previous two answers, he swallowed hard. He gave a tentative look at the serene smile on the priestess’ face and finally mustered the courage to say loudly, "Drink, um, if you want to drink, I’ll buy, and if you don’t want to, I won’t."

"So disappointing." The priestess shook her head discontentedly and sighed, "Shifting the choice onto the girl, it’s men like you who lack responsibility. You’re unworthy and should be punished."

With a "bang", the same blue magic shield flashed and vanished. The young mercenary was, without a doubt, sent flying the same distance for the third time, landing in the same exact way. This time, however, he didn’t feel any pain as his behind was already numb from the impact.

The third Gold Rank. Other patrons in the inn felt as numb as the boy’s behind. It’s not unheard of to see three Gold Rank professionals in one day in this distant fortress, but it was rare to see three striking young girls in the bar all at once. It was a sight that only occurred every few years.

Footsteps sounded and again stopped in front of the young mercenary. The lad looked up to find a blond man, who had been following the three girls, standing before him, extending a hand. "Get up," he said.

"I don’t want to." The lad shook his head hard, saying loudly, "You want to throw me too, I’m not getting up."

"I won’t throw you." The man stifled a laugh and replied, "I promise, I won’t."

"Really?" Skeptical, the lad eyed the man’s laughing face, then suddenly sat on the ground, hugging his head, "I don’t believe it, you must be tricking me. I’m not getting up."

"Alas, why do people never believe the truth?" The man shrugged helplessly, passed by the lad, and paid him no further mind as he sank into his victimhood fantasy.

Eventually, the four walked over and took their seats at the bar, allowing the inn to return to its usual atmosphere. The guests, however, were noticeably quieter than before. The young mercenary, who seemed almost on the brink of tears sitting on the floor, was pulled back to his seat by his friends. The fellow mercenaries and guests, known and unknown, crowded around him, congratulating him for his close encounter with the beautiful girls and for having the opportunity to hold his goddess’ hand. Mercenaries don’t mind bowing down to the powerful, especially when the superior ones were just three beautiful girls playing a harmless prank. They minded it even less in this case.

"I see you’ve had your fair share of encounters with mercenaries." Pannis, who had just sat down at the bar along with the three girls, teased, "you seem to have no trouble handling them."

"We have met them quite often." Lina sat at the bar and gracefully got up to greet Pannis, who had just arrived. "We’re all used to it."

Even after countless times, Pannis still felt uncomfortable witnessing Lina’s act, although he knew perfectly well that it was just her imitating someone else. It felt as if he was facing a different person. Tentatively, he asked, "Is this Princess Heidi’s part now?"

"You recognized it?" Delighted by his observation, Lina smiled gently, "I’m glad, Vivian couldn’t recognize it you see."

"Who’s calling me?" After a few minutes, Vivian suddenly looked up from where her head was drooped down and looked around, "Lina, did you call me?" ƒгeewebnovёl.com

"No." Even the current, more polite, character of Lina couldn’t help answering irritably, "Go back to your daydreaming."

"What would you four like to have?" The innkeeper, a local who once served in the local garrison, started his inn after retiring and catered specifically to mercenaries and the stationed troops. With years of experience, he instantly identified the four as no ordinary individuals and attended to them personally, preventing the busy waitstaff from stepping in.

"We’ll have one grilled salmon with grape juice, one boiled oyster with vegetable salad and golden silk fruit juice, and two servings of stewed Nala venison with rye beer, add a little honey to one of them, as quickly as possible." Catherine didn’t ask for anyone’s opinion and directly started ordering from the menu. Everyone knew that with her meticulousness, she would already be aware of their preferences and ensuring everyone’s satisfaction.

"Are you four adventurers?" The innkeeper asked tentatively, "Not many adventurers come here in this season."

"This season?" Catherine was taken aback. "What’s special about it? Ah, I know what you mean, you’re talking about the magical beast attacks."

"Yes, many magical beasts tend to attack villages during autumn to accumulate food for the winter," the innkeeper expressed his concern, "just a few days ago, we heard the nearby Schwerer Village was almost overrun, and dozens of civilians were killed. Be very careful if you’re intending to enter the forest during this season."

"I considered that too," Catherine replied, "But if the beasts are on the move, wouldn’t it be easier to get into the forest?"

"It’s not that simple." The innkeeper shook his head, negating Catherine’s idea, "In reality, only the weaker beasts on the outskirts of the Shining Forest attack the villages annually. The really powerful beasts rarely leave the forest, as they can attack weaker beasts within the forest. Thus, during this season, territories within the forest tend to be chaotic. It might offer more opportunities to infiltrate, but compared to other times, it’s not the best time to enter the forest."

Hearing the innkeeper’s advice, Catherine looked hesitantly at Lina and Pannis. When she saw them nod in encouragement, she bit her lip and said, "It doesn’t matter. We need to give it a try. If it proves too difficult to move further into the forest, we’ll retreat. Anyway, thank you for your advice."

The innkeeper smiled and was about to say something when there was a minor commotion at the door. The inn’s door was pushed open, and a hoarse female voice resounded from outside, "There are reports of someone here harassing a female and starting a fight. What squad is responsible for this, step forward."
