Chapter 69: I Told You I’d Be Back!

The bath chamber was thick with a silken, cream-white vapor that smelled of crushed orchids and warm, golden amber. It was a lazy, intoxicating fragrance that slowed the pulse and melted away the weight of the crown, clinging to the damp marble walls like a humid kiss.

The heavy mist carried the rich, sleepy scent of heated vanilla and sun-warmed resins, turning Valex’s bath into a hazy, dreamlike sanctuary where time seemed to dissolve entirely. He sat at the edge of the marble bath, his head facing upwards with his eyes closed as he rested them on top of the marble bath edge. His face relaxed but his muscles were still tensed; he looked vulnerable but still alert.

He sighed out slowly and opened his eyes as he looked at the ceiling, his eyes completely lost in thoughts that he couldn’t comprehend. He parted his lips slightly and said softly, "Odesse." He put his hand over his face and said, "How come I don’t remember you?" He removed his hands slowly, pushing his hair back to make it slick, and said, "For the servants and other people to remember you, you most certainly were important to this kingdom. So how come I do not remember you?" He pulled himself down, burying himself in the water.

...

The next day, the palace was quiet and less vibrant than usual. A heavy, uneasy stillness hung in the air, as if the very walls of the fortress were holding their breath, waiting for a storm that had been brewing for a week to finally break.

Valex was visited by his elders in the royal council chamber. He sat on his throne, his massive frame dominating the carved stone seat, though the dark circles under his eyes and the tight, rigid line of his jaw betrayed the exhaustion consuming him. Kael stood behind him, a silent, stoic sentinel whose sharp eyes mapped every subtle shift in the room. The elders sat around the long crescent-shaped mahogany table, their old faces etched with gravity, their whispers dying down the moment the heavy doors banged shut.

Valex leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. His gaze was sharp, but the typical gold luster of his alpha eyes was masked by an unnatural, deep stillness.

"Elders," Valex began, his voice a low, raspy rumble that cut through the lingering silence. "You requested an audience with urgency. Speak. Why have you come to the council chambers today?"

The eldest among them, Elder Myr, cleared his throat. He smoothed his long, gray robes and adjusted his posture, exchanging a brief, worried glance with the men beside him before facing the throne.

"Your Highness," Myr said, his voice carrying the weathered weight of a man who had served Valex for a long time. "The palace has been in absolute turmoil for the past seven days. We received word yesterday evening that the frantic searching has ceased. We came to see the Queen, since she has finally been found. The entire kingdom has been grieving and praying for her safety. We wish to ensure our Queen is well."

A strange, hollow look crossed Valex’s features. For a fraction of a second, his left eye twitched, a momentary flash of amber fighting against the heavy, unnatural dark green depth of his irises. He tilted his head, his brow furrowing as if trying to grasp a word that kept slipping away from his tongue.

"The Queen is safe," Valex said slowly, the words sounding slightly rehearsed, as if he were forcing his mind to sync with his voice. "But you speak with confusion, Elder. The search has ended because my wife is back at my side where she belongs."

Elder Myr frowned, leaning forward. "Then allow us to pay our respects to Queen Odesse, Your Highness. The pack needs to know she is unharmed."

At the mention of the name, Valex’s posture stiffened. The temperature in the council chamber seemed to drop instantly, a suffocating pressure rippling outward from the throne.

"Kael," Valex commanded without turning his head. "Go to the royal quarters. Bring the Queen to the council chamber. It seems my elders require visual proof of her return but confuses her for someone else."

Behind the throne, Kael’s jaw tightened so hard the bone throbbed beneath his skin. His fingers twitched against the hilt of his sword. He knew exactly who Valex was sending him to fetch, and the sheer disgust of it tasted like ash in his mouth. Yet, under the watchful, heavy gaze of the possessed King, Kael could not disobey without exposing his silent mutiny.

"Right away, Your Highness," Kael responded plainly, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.

He turned on his heel, his heavy leather boots clicking rhythmically against the stone floor as he exited the chamber. The walk to the royal suite felt like a march toward an execution. When he reached the doors, he didn’t bother to knock with respect; he simply pushed them open.

Azure was standing by the mirror, admiring a silk gown that had once belonged to Odesse. She turned, a sharp, knowing smirk instantly spreading across her delicate features when she saw the Kael’s dark expression.

"The King requests your presence in the council chamber," Kael said, his voice dropping into a chilling, hostile whisper. "The elders are waiting."

Azure chuckled softly, a melodic, grating sound. She didn’t say a word to him. She merely glided past him, her shoulder brushing his armor as she stepped out into the corridor. Kael followed a pace behind, his eyes locked onto the back of her head, his wolf snarling internally at the rotten, choking scent of ancient witchcraft that seemed to trail in her wake.

When the heavy oak doors of the council chamber opened once more, a tense hush fell over the room.

Azure walked in with a fluid, graceful stride, her head held high, a warm, serene smile plastered across her face. She walked directly toward the dais, completely ignoring the hard stares of the councilmen, and took her place right beside Valex’s throne. Valex’s expression instantly softened, his features twisting into a doting, vacant smile as he reached out and took her hand, threading his fingers through hers.

The elders sat in absolute, paralyzed shock.

Elder Raen gripped the edge of the mahogany table so tightly his knuckles turned white. He stood up slowly, his chair scraping loudly against the stone floor. He looked from Azure’s smug, smirking face to the King, his chest heaving with disbelief.

"Your Highness..." Raen stammered, his voice cracking with a mixture of confusion and horror. "What... what is the meaning of this? Who is this woman standing beside you?"

Valex’s smile faded, replaced by a sudden, dangerous scowl. He stood up from his throne, his towering figure casting a massive shadow over the crescent table. The dark green in his eyes flared with a predatory light.

"Watch your tongue, Elder," Valex warned, his voice a low, threatening hiss that echoed off the high ceiling. "You are looking at your Queen. This is my wife."

"This is the royal tutor!" Elder Fenris shouted out, unable to contain his panic, rising from his seat. "Your Highness, have you lost your mind? This woman is Azure! She was hired months ago to teach customs to Queen Odesse! Where is Odesse? Where is the mother of your unborn child?!"

Azure stepped forward smoothly, her touch lingering on Valex’s arm. She looked down at the shouting elder with a look of profound, mocking pity.

"Please, Elders, do not raise your voices at my husband," Azure said, her tone dripping with a sweet, manipulative sorrow. She looked toward Valex, her eyes wide and pleading. "I told you, my King... the pack has not yet healed from the tragedy. They are still confused."

Valex turned his gaze to Azure, his anger instantly melting into a dazed, protective fog. He rubbed the back of her hand softly.

"I remember now," Valex said, looking back at the stunned councilmen. His voice was entirely calm, completely detached from the reality of the court. "Odesse was my previous wife. She passed away shortly after we mated. It is a tragedy, yes, but history must move forward. Azure is the one who holds my heart. She is the true Queen of the Moonlight Pack."

Elder Raen looked at Kael, silently begging the Kael to step in, to draw his sword, to do something to stop this madness. But Kael stood frozen behind the throne, his arms crossed over his chest, his head slightly bowed. Kael’s eyes met Elder Raen’s for a split second, a silent, desperate message passing between them: Do not push further, or he will kill you.

Elder Raen slowly sank back into his chair, his old hands shaking uncontrollably. The rest of the elders sat in numbed silence, the horrific realization settling into their bones. Their fierce, unyielding Alpha had been compromised. His memory had been rewritten, his love had been stolen, and a monster was now sitting on the throne beside him.

Valex sat back down, pulling Azure closer to his side until she was resting against the arm of his throne.

"The search is officially over, and the borders are secure," Valex announced, his tone leaving absolutely no room for argument. "You have seen your Queen. You know she is safe. This council is dismissed. Return to your duties."

The elders stood up mechanically, their faces pale, their spirits entirely crushed. They bowed lower than usual, not out of respect, but out of a desperate need to hide the terror in their eyes. They filed out of the chamber in a silent, ghostly procession, the heavy oak doors closing behind them with a definitive, echoing thud.

Left alone in the cavernous room, Azure leaned down, whispering something softly into Valex’s ear that made him chuckle lazily. Kael stood in the shadows behind them, staring out at the empty council table. The palace was fully under the witch’s control, the King was a prisoner in his own mind, and somewhere out there in the dark, the true Queen was gone.

...

The transition of a month had done nothing to lift the heavy, suffocating gloom that hung over the royal palace. Ever since Azure had taken her place by Valex’s side, the entire fortress felt trapped in an unending twilight.

Tonight, the royal bedchamber was quiet. Valex sat on the plush couch, his reading glasses balanced on the bridge of his nose as his eyes scanned the pages of a thick book. The soft click of the door handle drew his attention. He lifted his head slowly as Azure stepped into the room, wearing a short, slightly transparent nightgown. She walked toward him with a slow, deliberate confidence, a seductive smile playing on her lips.

"One month," she thought to herself, her eyes locking onto him. "It has been one month and he hasn’t even kissed or touched me. I have been patient, but tonight, I will finally make you mine completely, Your Highness."

Valex looked her up and down, a slow smirk tugging at the corner of his lips as he set his book aside on the table. "What is going on?" he asked, his voice low.

Azure closed the remaining distance, her confidence unwavering. "I just wanted to seduce my husband," she murmured softly. "That is all."

Valex smiled, opening his arms to her. "Come here."

She moved forward and sat sideways onto his lap, leaning into his chest. But the moment her weight settled against him, Valex’s posture went completely rigid. He suddenly seized his head with both hands, his knuckles turning white as his breath hitched.

Deep within his mind, the mental chains violently strained. Blurry, fractured visuals flashed behind his eyelids—the silhouette of a woman walking toward him like Azure just did, her long, striking white hair catching a light he couldn’t see. Everything else was a distorted blur, but the image struck his soul like lightning. He groaned in pain, his chest heaving as he fought the pressure in his skull.

Azure froze, her seductive facade instantly cracking into panic. "Your Highness? What is wrong?"

"My head..." Valex choked out, his eyes squeezed shut as he gripped his temples tightly. "It hurts. I can’t... I can’t open my eyes."

Azure scrambled off his lap, stepping back as she stared at him in disbelief. "What is going on?" she thought frantically. "What is this?"

Valex attempted to force himself up from the couch, his muscles straining, but he collapsed right back into the cushions. It felt as though an invisible, crushing weight was pinning his entire body down. "I can’t get up," he rasped, his voice tightening.

The very fabric of the room began to alter. The warm air turned icy and fierce, thick with a lethal, ancient aura that made the hairs on Azure’s arms stand up. Sweat broke out across her forehead as she watched Valex groan in agony, his spirit waging a silent war behind closed eyes.

Desperate to maintain her control, Azure rushed back toward him. She grabbed his wrists, attempting to pull his hands away from his head and drag him to his feet. But before she could even pull, an invisible, kinetic force blasted into her chest. The sheer impact hurled her backward across the room, knocking the breath from her lungs as her back hit the stone wall with a fierce, deafening crash.

As Azure slid to the floor, Valex’s head dropped back against the couch, his body going completely limp as consciousness finally left him.

Azure groaned in pain, her body aching as she lay paralyzed on the ground. A sudden, violent gust of wind howled through the courtyard, tearing the balcony doors open. The heavy velvet curtains whipped wildly into the air, allowing the brilliant, unyielding light of a full moon to flood the dark bedchamber.

Azure forced her head up, her terrified gaze locking onto the open window where the moonlight poured in like a silver path.

Then, cutting through the whistling wind, a soft, chilling voice echoed into the room, carrying a terrifying familiarity.

"I told you I would come back, Azure."

Azure’s eyes widened in absolute horror, the blood turning to ash in her veins as she recognized the tone. She whispered weakly into the freezing air, "Odesse..."
