Chapter 27: Seeker’s Vision

The next second, Allen saw his SP balance drop by a whopping 80000.

He felt a slight pang but ignored it.

A moment later, a panel appeared in front of him.

[Ding!

Congratulations!

You’ve successfully purchased The Seeker’s Vision!]

Allen noticed the message flashing in front of him with slight skepticism as he wasn’t feeling any different.

Just as he was about to ask the System, he felt his eyes start to burn from the inside!

"AAAAGGHH!!"

Allen roared as he fell to his knees and pulled on his hair.

"RRAAAGH!"

Sshh

Blood trickled down from his eyes but almost immediately turned into smoke from an unknown heat spreading from it.

’Shieet! Why the hell does it burn so much!? It feels like my eyes have been set in FIRE!’

"MY EYES!! GAAHD!!"

Allen’s excruciating cries of pain and anguish lasted for over ten minutes which to him felt like 10 hours as he writhed uncontrollably until it slowly died down.

It wasn’t before the fifteenth minute that Allen finally felt the pain stop completely.

He stood up from the ground and panted for breath.

"..."

He opened his eyes and looked at a nearby window that showed a perfect reflection of himself.

His once ocean-blue eyes had transformed into pupils that resembled the Sun itself, burning with a soft golden glow that seemed to illuminate the treacherous path that laid ahead of him, revealing the thorns and crevices that stood in his way.

He felt as if he could ’see’ more than before, as if his horizons had been widened.

It was as if before he was seeing with a phone and was now seeing with a DSLR. The difference was unimaginable.

’This... strange power that I feel... is overwhelming... yet draining?’

Allen tried to wrap his head around this newfound power he felt when a system screen appeared in his vision. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺

[Seeker’s Vision

Level: 1

Cost: 10 SP/minute

Usage: Enhanced vision that allows the user to see not just the world but decipher the hearts of those around him.]

Allen read the description that couldn’t get any more vague.

’So that’s what was making me feel drained...’

What stood out to him was the cost of 10 SP for every minute he kept the Seeker’s Vision active.

’That’s 600 SP for every hour. Damn that’s expensive.’

He couldn’t help but think of that.

’Also, level one? What does that mean? Is it sort of like a skill like the ones in video games?’

’If that’s the case, does that mean I can upgrade it? How?’

Multiple questions swirled inside Allen’s mind as he tried to think of an answer.

[Have you felt any changes, host?] The System asked.

’I sure did. Although, did you know of the burning sensation I would experience because of it?’

[Affirmative.]

’Then why didn’t you say so? It would have helped me be mentally prepared.’

[I did not find it important enough for it to be let known.] It replied.

’Not important? Do you realize how risky that was? What if a zombie had pulled up while I was in that state of vulnerability? One bite and you would’ve been stuck with a rambling monster.’

[You had already cleared this area of any zombies. Hence my decision.]

’Haah... there’s no way to beat you in an argument it seems.’ Allen inwardly sighed.

[Thank you for the compliment.]

’It wasn’t. Either way, now that I have bought the item, I’m sure you can tell me more about it, right? Because the description sure doesn’t.’ He said, hoping to gain more clarity from the System.

[I can. The Seeker’s Vision at Level 1 not only provides better vision and field of perception but also allows you to know whether someone is lying to you.]

’How does that work?’

[While it is active, you can instinctively tell whether someone is being truthful to you by simply looking at them.]

’Do I need to be looking straight into their eyes for it to work?’

[Negative. You can look at them anywhere for it to work.]

’Then do they need to look at my eyes?’

[Negative.]

’Hmm, it seems pretty simple and useful as well. With this, I can use it to vet those who wish to join me. I can use this to my advantage.’

’Starting with...’

He looked at the reason as to why he had come here.

’The Hospital.’

Even amidst all the destruction everywhere, the hospital looked relatively fine.

’I hope I find some survivors.’ He thought, eyes changing back to their original blue.

Whoosh!

His Rocket Boots flared up as he flew towards his destination.

Less than a minute later, he reached the front door.

However, when he tried to open it, he felt it was locked from the inside.

He raised his head slightly and looked at the CCTV placed on top of the door.

He noticed that the lights were blinking slightly which indicated that the camera was in use.

He looked directly at the camera and raised his hands up.

"I come in peace." Allen said.

He waited an entire minute but there was no sign of the door opening.

’I can just break it and enter. However, I don’t want to antagonize any potential future members of my Shelter either. Hmm, let’s wait two more minutes. If they don’t open the door by then, I’ll open it by force.’

Soon, the two minutes were about to pass. Allen was preparing to barge in when he felt a click enter his ears.

The door opened and revealed the figure of a suave middle-aged man.

He was clad in a doctor’s coat along with a stethoscope around his neck.

His black hair with gray strands fluttered slightly in the wind as beads of sweat formed on his head and trickled down his face.

He looked at Allen with a nervous gaze which he tried to hide behind a shaky smile but failed miserably.

"H-hello, may I ask the purpose of your..."
