Chapter 405 - 361: Another Arcade Progress
Tuesday, 11 November 1992
Zaboru sat in his office, grinning ear to ear. And for good reason: the first three arcade machines developed under the ZAGE and Nanco partnership were finally complete. The titles? Street Fighter, Streets of Rage, and Rampage. Early that morning, Nando Michio, the CEO of Nanco and ZAGE's arcade hardware partner, had called with great news. The prototypes had passed internal testing and were now ready for Zaboru to personally inspect.
Nando said The Arcade system Manufacturing was scheduled to begin in earnest by November 15, and the machines were slated to be deployed first to the Bakudan Arcade and Dream Catcher Arcade. As a goodwill gesture, Zaboru had arranged for the first three units to be delivered to both arcades free of charge. If the owners Toki and Satonaka liked what they saw, they could place additional orders at the standard retail rate.
But Zaboru had bigger plans. He didn't just want to place arcade cabinets—he wanted to spark a new wave of arcade culture in Japan. Advertisements were already in development to promote the new ZAGE arcade machines, with a focus on rejuvenating public interest in arcades as a destination for competitive and casual players alike and saying that ZAGE is not limited to just home consoles or handhelds—ZAGE is gaming itself, a symbol of play and imagination across all platforms.
Today, though, was for testing.
Zaboru had decided to bring a small group along for the unveiling: Ayumi, his girlfriend; Yugo, his energetic ZAGE Quality Control Head; and Akechi, the ever-stoic Ayumi brother and yakuza prince "Rashomon while also the owner of Akashidan game Developer".
As Zaboru drove them through the city toward the Nanco testing facility, the car was filled with restless energy.
"Boss-sama! What kind of surprise is it this time?!" Yugo bounced in his seat, practically vibrating with excitement.
Ayumi giggled. "Yes, Zabo, give us a hint at least!"
Akechi sat quietly in the back seat, arms crossed, but even he was curious.
Zaboru just smirked as he maneuvered through traffic. "Patience. You'll be blown away."
Roughly thirty-five minutes later, they arrived at the Nanco Arcade Testing Site—a low-profile building just outside the Tokyo tech district. It looked ordinary from the outside, but inside, it was a haven for developers and designers testing out bleeding-edge arcade tech.
As they stepped through the sliding doors, Yugo inhaled deeply. "Whoa! It smells like gaming in here!"
Zaboru laughed. "This is Nanco's test facility. And this," he gestured toward the back of the room, "is where your surprise awaits."
A familiar voice greeted them.
"Zaboru! There you are!" It was Nando Michio himself, striding across the room in his signature blue blazer. "Come on, let's not waste time. I want you to see the final designs."
Zaboru and his crew followed eagerly.
Set up on display, gleaming under the overhead lights, were three pristine arcade machines.
The Street Fighter cabinet featured a dynamic design with Ryu, Chun-Li, and Zangief etched across the side in vibrant, colorful art. The marquee above the screen lit up with a flickering title that brought a futuristic vibe.
Beside it stood the Streets of Rage cabinet. Its artwork highlighted Axel, Blaze, and Adam in bold action poses, complete with neon city backdrops that screamed "This is Arcade!" attitude it also has a black , red and gold color palette.
The third cabinet, Rampage, was perhaps the most eye-catching. A mural of George the Gorilla, Lizzie the Reptile, and Ralph the Wolf scaled the side of the machine as if climbing a skyscraper, with pixelated city chaos exploding beneath them.
"Boss-sama! What is this?" Yugo asked, nearly breathless.
"These," Zaboru said proudly, "are our first ZAGE arcade cabinets." then he corrected himself, "Well, technically not the first. The original ZAGE arcade was ZAS—the one Ayumi and I made back in the day."
Ayumi smiled, a wave of nostalgia washing over her as she remembered the time when she and Zaboru had built the first ten ZAS arcade cabinets by hand, pouring in endless hours and passion. She turned to admire the gleaming new machines, her eyes wide with awe. "These designs... they're amazing. Did you really do all this yourself, Zabo?"
"Of course," Zaboru replied. "Every detail. Nando was thrilled with the final touches."
Nando grinned. "Zaboru-san, you're truly on another level. I never imagined arcade games could look this polished—both in gameplay and cabinet design. It's like witnessing the future of arcades right here."
Akechi leaned forward, scrutinizing the cabinets. "What are the games themselves like?"
"Let's find out," Zaboru said, turning to Nando. "Are they operational?"
Nando grinned. "Fully playable. We calibrated everything this morning. Feel free to give them a test run."
Zaboru then asked, "So does this mean we can deploy these arcade units to Bakudan and Dream Catcher ahead of schedule?" Nando smiled and nodded. "Absolutely! They're fully prepped for early shipment and setup.
"Perfect," Zaboru said. "Then let's play."
The group spread out, each person naturally gravitating toward a different cabinet, their eyes gleaming with excitement as they prepared to test the newest generation of ZAGE arcade games firsthand.
