Chapter 406 - 362: Testing the Arcades
The group began to approach the arcade cabinets, but before they could split up, Zaboru raised a hand.
"Rather than scattering, let's check out each arcade one by one. That way you can all decide which one excites you most," he said with a grin. The group nodded in agreement.
Zaboru clapped his hands. "Let's start with Rampage."
They all moved toward the Rampage cabinet. Nando Michio was already by the machine and powered it on. The screen flickered to life, first showing the ZAGE logo, then the Nanco branding, and finally the main title screen for Rampage. Classic retro music kicked in as the attract mode cycled through.
"For now, we've got the coin mechanism active for testing purposes," Nando explained. "We'll need real 100-yen coins to run it."
He produced a small container filled with coins and handed some to Zaboru.
"Good idea, Nando-san," Zaboru said, smiling as he dropped a coin into the machine. The screen responded immediately, transitioning to the character selection.
Zaboru turned to the group. "Alright, who wants to play with me? It's a two-player game."
"Me!" shouted both Ayumi and Yugo.
"Wait, I should play! I'm ZAGE's Quality Control Head!" Yugo said, stepping forward.
Ayumi narrowed her eyes. "Yeah? And I'm Zaboru's girlfriend."
"That's not fair!" Yugo protested.
Zaboru chuckled. "Hey don't fight Settle it the old-fashioned way—rock, paper, scissors."
The two faced off. In one swift round, Yugo emerged victorious. "Yes! I won!"
He quickly took the second player spot while Ayumi crossed her arms and pouted playfully.
The game began, and the character select screen displayed three playable monsters: George the Gorilla, Lizzie the Lizard, and Ralph the Wolf. Zaboru picked George; Yugo selected Lizzie.
"Whoa, the graphics are incredible!" Yugo exclaimed as they started wreaking havoc on cityscapes, smashing buildings, eating civilians, and fending off tanks and helicopters.
"This is the beauty of 16-bit arcade hardware," Zaboru said proudly. "The machine is built specifically for one game, so we can push everything to the max."
Akechi observed quietly from behind, stunned. "What kind of game is this? Destroying cities as giant monsters? Who in their right mind comes up with this stuff?"
Ayumi chuckled. "Probably only Zabo."
Akechi sighed. "Yeah, I know. I still can't even begin to understand how his mind works."
Ayumi giggled. "That's his main charm, Nii-sama."
The two switched out with Akechi and Ayumi, who both took their turn at the cabinet. Despite his earlier doubts, Akechi quickly became immersed.
"This is... strangely addictive," he said, smashing a tank with glee.
Ayumi was all smiles as she tore through buildings, which slightly unnerved Zaboru. "You're enjoying that a bit too much," he said, half-joking.
After a while, Zaboru clapped again. "Alright, let's move on to Streets of Rage."
This time, Zaboru played alongside Ayumi. On the character select screen, Ayumi picked Blaze while Zaboru chose Axel.
The game began in a neon-soaked alley. Punches flew. Kicks landed. Pixelated thugs crumpled.
"Whoa! This is like Final Fight, but the controls and graphics feel tighter," Ayumi said.
"It's more refined, thanks to the dedicated arcade specs," Zaboru replied.
They switched players again, with Yugo and Akechi stepping up. Akechi, quiet as ever, performed surprisingly well, chaining together combos like a seasoned brawler.
"Where did you learn to fight like that?" Yugo asked.
"I used to live in alleys like these," Akechi said without looking away from the screen. He just wanted to sound cool, but the truth was simpler: Akechi genuinely loved beat-'em-up games. That passion translated into skill, which is why he was so good at them.
"Whoa that's... kind of intense," Yugo muttered, really trusting what Akechi said.
Finally, they made their way to the last machine: Street Fighter.
"Now this one, I've been dying to try," Zaboru said. "Let's go, Akechi-san"
The screen displayed a grand selection of twelve characters: Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Sagat, Zangief, Dhalsim, Blanka, Guile, M. Bison, Vega, Balrog, and E. Honda.
Akechi blinked. "That's a lot of characters, what kind of game is this?"
"You will understand Akechi-san for now just Pick one," Zaboru said.
Akechi hovered for a moment, then picked Sagat because this guy look like one of his underlings from Thailand and thought 'This guy reminds me of Chakri, my undelings from Thailand.'
Zaboru smirked and picked Chun-Li.
"Round one! Fight!"
The screen came alive with rapid punches and spinning kicks. Akechi tried to figure out the controls but quickly fell behind. Zaboru, already familiar with the layout from his previous life, dominated.
Chun-Li struck a pose after the victory.
"Whoa! Boss-sama, this Chun-Li has some serious thighs!" Yugo blurted out innocently. "Did you design her? Are you into strong thighs?!"
Zaboru nearly choked. "Wha—? Yes, I designed her, but being into strong thighs? No! It's because of martial arts training!" he blurted, clearly trying to deflect like a flustered Hideo Kojima under pressure when being asked about why his characters are sexy. Zaboru clearly want to escape using "Hideo Kojima" way
Ayumi raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced.
"She trains... a lot," Zaboru added quickly.
Akechi, though clearly irritated by his loss, had to admit the game was surprisingly fun. He found himself replaying the match in his head, intrigued by its depth and fast pace.
The next match was between Yugo and Ayumi. Yugo picked Blanka, and Ayumi—eyes still narrowed—chose Chun-Li.
What followed was a chaotic flurry of random button-mashing, unpredictable attacks, and lots of yelling.
"Take that!"
"What did I just do?!"
"I bit you?!"
Eventually, Yugo emerged victorious.
"Yessss! Victory tastes electric!" he declared, referencing Blanka's iconic move.
Ayumi gritted her teeth. "All you did was bite! That's so unfair!"
She stomped over to Zaboru with exaggerated drama. "Zaboru, Yugo is totally cheating!" she complained, pretending to be upset.
Zaboru just chuckled. "Hehehe, then I guess you'll have to beat him fair and square next time."

Ayumi crossed her arms with a mock pout but quickly broke into a playful smile. "Our battle isn't over yet, Yugo."
Yugo grinned back. "Bring it on!"
Yugo and Ayumi then fight in street fighter again.
The group gathered around again, catching their breath.
"Boss-sama," Yugo said, "all three games are amazing. Totally different, but equally fun."
Ayumi and Akechi nodded in agreement.
Zaboru looked at Nando. "Nando-san, I think we're ready. Let's start the rollout."
Nando grinned. "Absolutely, Zaboru-san. These machines are going to light up arcades across the country."
The entire room buzzed with energy. Laughter echoed, buttons clicked, and joysticks clacked as the group rotated through the machines, fully immersed in the joy of pure arcade gaming. They were having the time of their lives. And soon, not just Tokyo, but the whole of Japan—and eventually the global gaming scene—would come to recognize just how revolutionary the ZAGE Arcade System truly was.
