Chapter 77: Asking about the Dark Union

"Please look after him, I won’t forgive you if he gets hurt even a little bit!"

"Stay safe, big brother; run away if you see a magic beast!"

Standing in front of their house, Emily and their mother voiced out their worries for Alex as they watched him leave with Mia and Simon who had come to pick him up.

Alex looked back and waved at them while smiling, he promised to prioritise his safety and that they shouldn’t worry about him.

"Yeah, yeah. I’ll look after him, jeez." Aunt Mia waved her hands impatiently before entering the back seat along with Alex while Simon took the driver’s seat.

They immediately left the outskirt and headed for the group base.

After minutes of driving, they finally arrived in front of the three-story building, which was the base of the Rising Wave group.

Alex noticed that four trucks were parked outside the building.

When he asked Simon, the latter told him that the trucks were what they would be driving to their destination which was outside Balon City.

The three of them came out of the car and approached the four trucks. At the same time, the rest of the group began to come out of the building one after another.

"The youngest has arrived, now we can get going."

"Don’t be afraid, Alex. You can stay behind me when we are out, and we’ll protect you; just don’t run around."

"What are you talking about, didn’t we tell you about his first mission? The kid isn’t like those weak-minded newbies; he even killed a magic beast."

The members of the group waved and greeted Alex as they chatted amongst themselves; some of them were dressed in protective vests and gear; they had all prepared while waiting for Alex to arrive.

The members of the Rising Wave group started to board the trucks, a truck was able to carry up to six people.

Alex was in a truck with four other people. Simon drove; the rough-looking man sat with him in front while Alex stayed at the back with Mia and one other person.

"Are you nervous?" Mia turned to Alex and asked, a playful smile on her lips.

"A little," Alex replied.

"Haha, it’s normal. Don’t worry, there are going to be lots of people and you don’t have to do anything dangerous." The rough-looking man laughed.

"There are going to be others besides our group?" Alex asked with a confused face.

Although he already knew about this, he had heard it from Joan while he was role-playing as Mr Chen.

"Of course. We sometimes team up with other explorer groups to go on raids depending on the strength and number of beasts in the area that we are planning to raid. This time, we are teaming up with two other groups so you shouldn’t worry.

You might not even need to raise a finger." Simon was the one who explained.

"Oh, I see." Alex nodded. They had already started to move at this point, the four trucks lined up after each other and moved together.

Alex glanced at Mia beside him. The woman had been silent since they entered the truck and one might even think that she had fallen asleep.

As if sensing Alex’s gaze, Mia opened her eye and looked at him.

"What? Falling for your Aunt? Well, it’s not a bad thing since we aren’t related; I’m just your mother’s friend." Mia stated with a tempting smile.

Simon and the other two men were already used to their leader’s character and didn’t react to her words. On the other hand, Alex blushed slightly as his thoughts ran wild but he quickly controlled himself; he had something to ask.

"I want to ask about something." Alex voiced out. Mia raised an eyebrow seeing that Alex was already getting used to her teasing so fast and wasn’t appearing too flustered, she clicked her tongue.

"You’re becoming less cute, tch. Anyway, what do you want to ask about?" She inquired as she made herself more relaxed.

Alex hesitated for a bit before asking.

"What is the Dark Union?"

...

Silence enveloped the truck immediately after Alex asked that question, Alex could feel the sudden tension in the air inside the truck.

The truck was still moving but he could feel that everyone was staring at him.

Simon was looking at him through the rearview mirror, his eyes wide open without shock. The rough-looking man had directly turned around on his seat and was gazing intently at Alex with a burning gaze.

Mia and the other man who were seated beside Alex stared at him with sharp glints in their eyes.

No one said anything for a few seconds and Alex was starting to wonder if he had done the right thing by asking.

Finally, after long seconds of being stared at, Mia finally broke the silence.

"Alex, why do you ask about the Dark Union?" Mia asked, her tone was sharp. Unlike the previous times when she was playful or even when she was cold toward people from the Union, her voice was filled with suspicion and vigilance.

Alex "..."

So serious? Now he was really curious about the Dark Union. But first, he needed to answer Mia’s question.

"Umm, I heard some kids at the academy talking about missing people. One of them said that their parents had mentioned something about the Dark Union being behind the missing people." Alex explained.

’ I’m so quick-witted!’ Alex thought to himself, proud of his quick thinking.

"Is that so?" Mia stretched with narrowed eyes, she stared at Alex for a few more seconds to see his reaction but let out a sigh after seeing Alex’s clueless face.

’He really is just a clueless kid, what was I even thinking?’ Mia blamed herself as she let out a sigh. Her expression returned to normal, and so did the others; they seemed to have realized that Alex didn’t know anything.

"Sorry that I suspected you for a moment there, Alex. Your mother would definitely scold me if she found out, could you not tell her about this as well?" Mia said with a charming smile as if trying to bewitch Alex.

Alex rolled his eyes; this was the second time that Aunt Mia was asking him to keep something from his mother; this was a sign of an unreliable adult!

"Same here, Alex. We’re sorry for suspecting you too." Simon and the other two showed sorry expressions as they apologized to Alex.

"Okay? But you still haven’t answered my question." Alex pointed out.

"The Dark Union, huh," Mia’s eyes flashed with disgust as she spoke, "They are a bunch of ruthless scumbags, the black sheep of mages and the enemy of the entire world. They are an organisation that does horrible things for no reason; a bunch of lunatics who, although hated, should not be provoked.

Alex, no matter what, do not go around searching for them. Nothing good ever happens to people who try to find them and even people related to their targets will be affected. This is for your own safety.

As for what your classmate’s parents said. If the Dark Union is really responsible for the cases of the missing people, then Balon City is in danger." Mia said with a grave tone.
