Xavier returned to the room just as Selene sent Agnes out. He noticed a paper in Agnes’s hands which she held onto for dear life.

"Is Josephine settling in well? I’m afraid we might have left her side too fast after dinner," said Selene.

"My mother is going to bother Harold and you don’t need to be at her side all the time. It isn’t like someone died. It’s also not certain her being away from my father will last long," Xavier replied, closing the door behind him.

"Why do you say that? She has taken this big step to come here so I think she might have moved on from him. I mean, if she doesn’t I wouldn’t be upset but being away from each other seems to be the direction it will head for now," Selene said, not seeing how it could change unless Nathaniel changed.

"This is what they always do. They fight, she does something to make him realise how angry she is, and comes back to apologise then he messes up all over again. His issue of who I’ve married isn’t going to go away for a while. He’s going to drag it on until he gets what he wants," Xavier explained.

Xavier pulled his shirt over his head as he walked toward where Selene sat.

"So, if she’s not going to leave him then we have to deal with this until there’s a rare chance he dies? So, I should prepare myself to always have a room ready for your mother. I will keep this in mind," Selene said, disappointed this was not the end.

Xavier came to stand behind Selene to rub her shoulders. "You will not have to prepare a room for her each time. If my mother cannot realise my father won’t change then she will need to hide out somewhere else. I cannot have this going on forever."

"It cannot," Selene agreed with Xavier. "It would mean having your father come to look for her here. My heart aches for her because I have been in a position where I had to decide to leave. As long as she is happy with her decisions then I don’t mind where she is."

"I spoke to Lucas a moment ago. He spoke of seeing a priest who had been eyeing us and today, that priest had been speaking with Cassandra. Do you know anything about where she came from?" Xavier asked, planning to look more into where Cassandra came from.

Selene shook her head. "No, I didn’t want to know anything about her. I only know that he found her during his time out at war. I don’t know where. Could she be involved with the attacks? I have never seen a priest watching me before. Perhaps they have watched you before and now they are watching your wife."

"I have never troubled a church since I never had any reason to go near one. I have long suspected they would move on to target purebloods soon so that must be why they are now watching us. You shouldn’t have another outing like you did today anytime soon," Xavier suggested.

He only allowed it because of his mother.

"Wait," Selene touched his hand. "Aside from that, do you believe Gabriel might have brought someone who might be in on the attacks?"

"I do," Xavier nodded. In his eyes, Gabriel was quite unfortunate. "I don’t like to believe in these kinds of coincidences so I have already ordered for someone to look into her. He was the best person at the time for her to come here with. I will find proof first but for now, keep your distance."

"I am. Lucas later told me of Cassandra trying to approach me. I do not know what for. The time I was around her, Gabriel acted like she was some delicate flower but if it is true she is involved, the people who are behind these are dangerous. She might be able to kill the vampires she surrounds herself with," Selene said, worried.

"Are you concerned she will kill him?" Xavier asked, hoping it wasn’t so. Selene was kind but he didn’t want her too kind to be worried about Gabriel.

"It is not like you think. He is in the position where she will meet with other vampires. I am worried that he has given her a path to other vampires and because of how she is presented, they will think she is harmless. That is what I am concerned about," Selene clarified. "I don’t care for him."

Gabriel could die for all Selene cared but she was worried about the others who weren’t prepared for Cassandra to be the one to hurt them.

"It has not been proven but I will keep a close eye on her and this priest as well as keep them away from you. If what I suspect is right, if Gabriel isn’t of much use to her then he might be next on her list. Which, I wouldn’t mind if he is," said Xavier.

All Xavier wanted was to see Gabriel die a slow painful death and to witness him regret his choice.

"That is his fault. I meant to tell you earlier but I started my plans. I came to know secrets about the Valors so I tasked Agnes with handing it to some of the guards here to spread around. What she intended to pass around was only something a Valor could know so Gabriel would seek her out though he wouldn’t be able to prove what she had done without sharing more secrets.

"No, you can continue with your plans. He can come to our doors but he won’t be able to harm you. I won’t allow it," Xavier said, his fingers raking through her silky home. "Have you remembered our plans for tonight?"

Selene smiled since she had been caught earlier. "Before I forgot but I do remember."

Selene stood up from the chair where she had been sitting when Agnes brushed her hair. "I do not understand how it slipped my mind earlier when this was all I could think of this morning. We missed out on the chance to lay around with each other all day. Is it bad that I want that? Am I clinging to you too much already?"

Xavier’s right arm went around her waist, pulling her closer. "From the moment you arrived here that night, I had to be chasing you or doing what I could to get you to look my way. I have to enjoy the time you cling to me before that chase starts again so please, hold onto me as much as you like."

Xavier tugged on her dress, his left hand used to slip the strap of her dress down the side of her arms.

Selene cupped Xavier’s face with her hands. "You should consider yourself lucky since I do not plan to run anymore. You have convinced me to stay still and enjoy our moments. Now that you have done so, you can never change your mind about how close I want to be with you. I will not allow it."

Xavier lifted Selene into his arms and carried her toward their bed. "That will never happen. If those words ever come out of my mouth then you should run and get the guards since it could only be a shapeshifter."
