Chapter 284: A Risk

Jules’ pov

"He’s in mourning?" I echoed out, beyond confused as I stared at Raina. I had arrived here with Roy and Kim about ten minutes ago, and she had instantly ushered us in and offered us some tea and cookies, although I was unable to even sip at the tea, too strung up to do that.

I had been that way after the text she sent me. It has not only caught me off guard, it has been completely unexpected as well.

After we all returned from that tunnel, we searched for Blaze everywhere. We had even returned to the demon clan to ask Raina if her brother returned back here after changing into his final form, because Roy suggested he might have gone there since that might be a location his brain was more untuned with in his current situation. But he hadn’t been there.

We had been searching ever since.

After a few minutes of us arriving, she had begun to explain how her men who had been searching for her brother non stop finally stumbled upon him, deep in the mountains.

He wasn’t just living life there or anything else. Apparently, he was in mourning, and that made no sense to me.

Raina let out a small hum as she nodded, pushing her hair out of her face and I tried not to start too hard at her horns. They reminded me of Blaze’s horns, but hers looked like that of a baby compared to Blaze’s large ones.

"He’s in mourning." She confirmed and the frown on my face deepened just as she continued.

"You see, for months now, the people living close to that mountain had all deserted that place because they claimed a monster now resides there. We didn’t take them seriously and it didn’t even dawn on me that it might have been Blaze this whole time.

My uncle sent his men out to go eliminate the monster on that mountain about a week ago, and when only one returned alive, my uncle realized the monster couldn’t be a regular thing. Something within me urged me to order my men to go check that same location and surprisingly, they found Blaze there." She paused and exhaled slowly, eyes still locked on mine.

"My men foolishly tried capturing him and some of them ended up dying. Most of them ended up returning and they told me he asked them not to return. I wanted to be certain it was him so I want myself. It was him. Even in that form, I was easily able to recognize him."

I let out a loud breath of relief, my mind feeling extremely light for the first time in months.

"Were you able to say anything to him?" I asked and this time, she snorted.

"I wasn’t able to get close to him, not to talk of having a conversation with him. If I had gone any closer, he’d have milked me... because I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be able to recognize anyone in that state." She explained and I let out a quiet wounded sound, staring down at my fingers while that memory flashed before my mind of him being unable to recognize me.

"So... how do we get him back?" Roy asked this time and Raina sighed before getting to her feet.

"This is the problem. You can’t."

My eyes widened, my heartbeat accelerating.

"We can’t?" Roy echoed and Raina hummed.

"We can’t. But he can." Raina responded, pointing at me at the end of her sentence and my eyes widened even more.

"I can?" I mumbled as I blinked at her and she nodded firmly.

"When I went to take a look at Blaze myself, since we both share the same blood, I was able to look into his mind." She paused. "That is strictly forbidden, it’s like a huge britches of trust, but in this case, that’s the only choice I had. And after looking into his mind, all I could see was a memory of you tumbling into that void and falling and falling." She explained and my eyes widened.

"That’s all he’s always thinking about. He’s mourning you, because he thinks you’re dead." She explained further and a breath whooshed right out of my lungs.

"But... I didn’t die, I’m not dead." I whispered and she hummed again.

"Seems like Blaze couldn’t remember anything aside from you falling. That was what fully triggered his final form into surfacing. And now, even though he’s supposed to have forgotten everything he knew, he’s still able to remember you, his mate." She explained and I almost passed out from how fast my heart was racing.

"You know what that means? It means the bond you share is the only thing keeping him from fully losing himself. Which means it’s left to you to go get him." She explained and my heart stood still.

"Oh." I whispered and she nodded firmly. "If we fail to successfully get him to transform back into his human form, then my uncle would take it upon himself to kill him, because i’m certain he plans on visiting the mountains himself next week."

Roy stood up this time. "And how’s labyrinth supposed to get Blaze to change back? I thought after he turned into his final form, he wouldn’t be able to turn back into human again."

Raina hummed. "You’re right. But in this situation, we’re lucky enough that the bond he shares with his mate is very strong. That’s what’s keeping him from fully going feral, which means it’s possible for us to still get him back. He just needs to agree to shift back, that’s all. So far, I believe he still has the ability to shift back but refused because he’s only interested in mourning."

"So, labyrinth is supposed to go to him?" Kim asked this time and Raina nodded.

"Yes. We’ll all accompany him if he’s willing to do this, but we won’t go all the way with him. Blaze is gonna blast us all if we attempt to do that."

"What’s the guarantee he wouldn’t blaze Labyrinth off too? You said he couldn’t recognize anyone." Roy questioned.

"I just know it within me that Blaze wouldn’t hurt his mate no matter what. He’s gonna be able to recognize who his mate is no matter what." Raina turned towards me next.

"So... are you willing to do this?"
